Bert Joris Quartet - Magone

On Sunday the 16th of September 2007 the Bert Joris Quartet performed at the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen, a city in the southwest part of the Netherlands. The Bert Joris Quartet, features Bert Joris on trumpet and flügelhorn, Dado Moroni at the piano, Ira Coleman bass and Dré Pallemaerts drums
Bert Joris presented with his quartet his new album, titled Magone. The title is in fact a play upon words of Mother Is Gone and, Bert Joris explained, the word Magone means in the Italian language: A lump in the throat due to sorrows. This tune was dedicated to a friend who recently died and it became the title song of this album. A great and impressive tune, lyrical and sensitive. It was remarkable to learn how these four men were able to create such a fragile atmosphere that you could have heard a pin drop. Even the applause after a solo left undone during these moments. Great !!
Bert Joris happened to be a great soloist on trumpet, but also on flügelhorn, but above all he is a great composer and arranger. All tunes on this CD were composed by Bert, like To Philip, dedicated to his source of inspiration, Philip Catherine. Mr. Dodo is dedicated to his good friend and piano player in the band, Dado Moroni. Dado is a great lyrical piano player, a giant in both senses, as he had troubles to put his legs under the Steinway grand piano.
Other tracks of this CD are Triple, dedicated to the cat of Bert, as they are continually at each other's throats. Cats ate my birds when I was a kid, you know: he explained. In Sign and Signatures he cleaned an old composition, he recorded on one of his first album, Sweet Seventina, ( 50 years ago ... oh no we're not that old ...) with his brother Dirk and drummer Dré Pallemaerts. Both Dré Pallemaerts and Ira Coleman ( he´s not on the album - the bass was played by Philippe Aerts ) showed that they are a great rhythm secton.
They finished the set with a great performance of Benoit, the tune that closes the album. The album shows the great qualities of Bert Joris as a trumpet player and composer. So try to find yourself a copy !! (Dreyfuss Jazz FDM 46050 369112)

Op zondag 16 september 2007 speelde het Bert Joris Quartet in de Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen. Het Bert Joris Quartet bestaat uit Bert Joris op trompet en bügel, Dado Moroni achter de vleugel, Ira Coleman op bas en Dré Pallemaerts op slagwerk.
Bert Joris presenteerde met dit concert zijn nieuwe album Magone. De titel van de plaat is een woordspeling op Mother Is Gone en, zo legde Bert Joris uit, het woord Magone blijkt in het Italiaans ook Een brok in de keel door verdriet te betekenen. Het nummer is dan ook gewijd aan een onlangs overleden vriend. Een indrukwekkend en vooral gevoelig nummer. Het was overigens opvallend hoe deze vier musici een haast breekbare sfeer konden opwekken, waardoor je een speld kon horen vallen; zelfs het applaus na een solo bleef tijdens dit nummer achterwege. Klasse - Great !! Bert Joris bleek tijdens dit concert een groot solist op zowel trompet and bügel maar bovenal een fantastisch componist en arrangeur. Alle nummers op deze CD zijn dan ook van zijn hand, zoals To Philip, opgedragen aan zijn grote inspirator Philip Catherine. Het nummer Mr. Dodo is speciaal geschreven voor zijn vriend en pianist Dado Moroni. Dado is, letterlijk en figuurlijk, een groot pianist - groot in beide betekenissen, waardoor hij herhaaldelijk klem kwam te zitten onder de grote Steinway vleugel.
Andere nummers op deze CD zijn Triple, gewijd aan de kat van Bert Joris, waar mee hij, zo legde hij uit, een haat liefde verhouding heeft. Katten aten vroeger mijn vogeltjes dood, weet je ! Met Sign and Signatures gaat Bert zelfs helemaal terug naar zijn eerste plaat Sweet Seventina ( 50 jaar geleden, oh nee, zo oud zijn we toch nog niet? ) met zijn broer Dirk en drummer Dré Pallemaerts. Zowel Dré Pallemaerts en Ira Coleman ( hij speelt niet mee op de plaat - de bas wordt daar gespeeld door Philippe Aerts ) lieten zien dat ze een geweldige ritmesectie vormen.
Het optreden werd afgesloten met het nummer Benoit, het nummer dat ook de plaat afsluit. De CD Magone is vooral een monument ter ere van Bert Joris en laat met name zien wat een groot trompettist en componist hij is. Je kunt dus niet om deze schitterende CD Magone heen. Zorg dat je hem te pakken krijgt.
