Een paar weken geleden vond ik een dubbel LP getiteld Les Haricots Rouges At The Dixieland Band Ball ( Punch C178-15364/65 .) The 2LP is een verzameling nummers van Les Haricot Rouges opgenomen midden jaren zestig en bevat zo'n 20 titels, vooral genomen uit de rijke dixieland traditie; van Tiger Rag tot the Sheik of Araby en Ory's Creole Trombone. Het bekende werk !!

Les Haricots Rouges werd opgericht begin jaren zestig door Pierre Jean en Gérard Tarquin en is nog steeds volop actief. Ik vond een vroeg filmfragment uit deze periode, waarin we Les Haricots Rouges als pauzenummer zien tijdens het Eurovisie Songfestival. Ik hoef, denk ik, nu hier niet uit te leggen dat dit Eurovisie Songfestival nog steeds bestaat, maar dat de glans eraf is en het evenement niet meer zo populair in de Lage Landen dan toen, mede door de "nieuwe" Europese landen die het festival domineren. Het fragment is in ieder geval een schitterend tijdsdocument.

Op dit fragment spelen Les Haricots Rouges "dixieland" zoals dat in die tijd erg populair was - statisch, veel te snel en de twee banjo's en het wasbord geven het een dominant ritme. Eigenlijk is de film een mooi voorbeeld van hoe men in de jaren zestig dixieland speelde - een tijdsdocument en eigenlijk is dit zo op de dubbel LP ook.
Er is eigenlijk één uitzondering op de plaat, die de aanschaf er van al overweegbaar maakt: Strange Fruit, het grootse protestlied van Billie Holiday - haar aanklacht tegen de rassendiscriminatie in het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten. Een schreeuwende, haast jankende klarinet, waarschijnlijk gespeeld door Gérard Tarquin ( nadere informatie ontbreekt) maakt dit nummer tot wat het is: blues-die-tot-in-je-ziel reikt. Dit nummer, Strange Fruit, kom je nog wel eens tegen bij meer modernere jazzvormen en zelden bij dixieland. Waarom heeft The Anachronic Jazzband dit nooit opgenomen?
Les Haricots Rouges is nog steeds actief en de muziek klinkt tegenwoordig professioneel, meer onderhoudend en swingend. En, heel belangrijk - er is veel te zien tijdens hun optredens, net zoals bijvoorbeeld bij de Orpheon Celesta. Humor is, tijdens optredens, heel belangrijk, denk ik - de hedendaagse bezoekers zijn veeleisend en willen vermaakt worden.
Nog een fragment - nu van een hedendaags optreden ......... entertainment !!

Deze dubbellp, Les Haricots Rouges - At The Dixieland Band Ball is m.i. vooral een tijdsdocument, geen muziek waarnaar de veeleisende jazzliefhebber nog op zoek is, met uitzondering uiteraard van Billie Holiday's aanklacht Strange Fruit.
De "moderne" Les Haricots Rouges kan, denk ik, nog steeds prima een flinke groep mensen boeien, net als overigens Le Petit Jazz Band de Mr. Morel, zeg maar de "herboren" Charquet et Co, geleid door Jean-Pierre Morel. Overigens, mocht je zelf deze dubbel-lp hebben en uitgeluisterd zijn, doe deze LP dan niet weg - hij is alleen al voor de schitterende hoes het bewaren waard. Eet smakelijk !!

JIMMY SHERMAN:
Vandaag. 17 augustus 2008, herdenken we de 100ste geboortedag van Jimmy Sherman, pianist en arrangeur. Hij wrd 100 jaar geleden, op 17 augustus 1908 in Williamsport PA (VS) geboren en overleed in oktober 1975. Hij speelde eerst in plaatselijke bands voordat hij een baan kreeg als pianist in het Alphonse Trent orkest, dat speelde op één van de boten op de Great Lakes. In de jaren dertig zien we hem terug in de bands van Al Sears, Stuff Smith, Lil Armstrong en Putney Dandridge. Tijdens de jaren veertig wordt hij begeleider van zanggroepen als The Charioteers. Hij is vooral bekend geworden als medecomponist, samen met Jimmy Davis en Roger Ram Ramirez, van het nummer Lover Man, gezongen door Billie Holiday.

JIMMY SHERMAN:
Today, the 17th of August 2008, Jimmy Sherman, piano player and arranger, was born 100 years ago. He was born on the 17th of august 1908 in Williamsport PA and passed away October 1975. He played in local bands during the 1920s before he started to be a professional piano player in the band of Alphonso Trent on one of those Great Lakes steamboats. In the 1930s you can find him in the orchestras of Al Sears, Stuff Smith, Lil Armstrong and Putney Dandridge. During the 1940s he became the accompanist of vocal groups like The Charioteers. He is now known for the 1941 song Lover Man, which he composed with Jimmy Davis and Roger Ram Ramirez, as sung by Billie Holiday.

Haricots Rouges

Some weeks ago I found a great double LP by Les Haricots Rouges titled At The Dixieland Band Ball. The 2LP is a compilation album of Les Haricot Rouges recordings from the mid 1960s and contains more then twenty tracks of most Dixieland standards from the Tiger Rag up to the Sheik of Araby.

Les Haricots Rouges was founded early 1960s by Pierre Jean and Gérard Tarquin and is still active nowadays. I found an early film fragment I love to share with you, where you can see Les Haricots Rouges as an intermission act during the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest. The Eurovision Song Contest is an annual contest between European countries to find out the most popular artist of the moment - nowadays the contest isn't as popular as it was twenty years ago, as new European states and money dominate the show.

On this fragment Les Haricots Rouges play in the typically Dixieland style of the 1960s - static, too fast and the sound and rhythm of two banjos is dominating. In fact, on the film and on the album they play Dixieland in a style that was popular in those days. The tunes selected are also the tunes from the traditional Dixieland song book and where played by all Dixieland bands in those days. There is one exception: Strange Fruit, the great protest song, Billie Holiday's indictment against racial discrimination. Les Haricots Rouges brings it with a screaming clarinet as a blues pur sang, which might be played by Gérard Tarquin, but there is no discographical info on the cover. A great performance, of a tune, normally played in more contemporary jazz styles. Why the Anachronic Jazz Band didn’t record this tune?

Les Haricots Rouges is still active and the music sounds now more professional, more entertaining and swinging!! And they give their performances a lot of humour. Humour is very important, because most visitors of concerts love to be entertained while they enjoy the music.
I love to share with you another fragment ..... the Haricots Rouges - as they sound nowadays .......to be entertained. I don't know if the missing sound half way is part of the show or a bad recording. well, never mind ... enjoy it!!

This double album, Les Haricots Rouges - at The Dixieland Band Ball has become a character of an era, not really interesting for the music, except for the Billy Holiday tune Strange Fruit. Les Haricots Rouges nowadays is a band which reminds me of the great French traditional jazz bands from the 1970s and 1980 and plays in a style like Le Petit Jazz Band de Mr. Morel, directed by Jean-Pierre Morel plays nowadays!! And if you happen to have this 2LP in your collection and the music can't fascinate you anymore, don't sell it ...... the cover is really great and tasty !!
