This times I love to refer to a contribution I posted almost two years ago. I shared the following story: A few years ago I got a message from a lady who lived in Groningen ( a city in the northern part of the Netherlands) who asked me where she could buy an Oscar Aleman recording. She told me, she bought a book to relax, each year, for her holidays period. Her favorite author was Jonathan Kellerman. Jonathan Kellerman writes detective / thriler like books and he always introduces the readers to certain musicians. In one of his books, she had forgotten wich ones, he had talked about Oscar Aleman and, as she had form a habit to obtain the music Kellerman suggested, she wanted to know where she could obtain a CD of Oscar Aleman.
It was a pity the lady couldn't give me more info ......

Then, October 2006 I received a message from David L.
Littlefield: Hi Hans. Found a reference to Oscar Aleman in the following novel: Jonathan Kellerman "Flesh and blood", Ballantine Books, 2002, p.326 (Chapter 29). This is a paperback edition, so the page well might be different in the hard cover edition.
"I ran the tape deck as I slumped in the front seat. Old recording of Oscar Aleman riffing on a shiny silver National guitar in some thirties Buenos Aires nightclub. Aleman and the band peeling off a ha-ha rendition of 'Besame Mucho' that would have done Spike Jones proud, but no mistaking the artistry." (Quotes from the contribution: Jonathan Kellerman)

What happened yesterday? In a village nearby, Kapelle, in the south west region of The Netherlands, Zeeland, last weekend, its yearly fair - De Kapelse Dag, was scedulded, which includes festivities with horses ( Ringsteken - a local game ( = Tilt at the Ring)) and a market, wich included this time some tables with used books. At one of the stalls I found ..... Flesh and Blood - The Stunning New International Bestseller by Jonathan Kellerman ( Headline Book Publishing London ( 2001) 566 p.). Although I wasn't sure for the fully 100 percent this was THE book ( and a quick glance into the book didn't bring me the name of Oscar Aleman) I bought it, took it home and opened the Jonathan Kellerman contribution I refered to. Page 326 didn't work, but chapter twenty-nine did. Finally I found the book and the quotation.

I love to share with you some critial notes around this quotation: It seems as if Jonathan Kellerman didn't had the correct information (or a vivid imagination) when he wrote: Old recording of Oscar Aleman riffing on a shiny silver National guitar in some thirties Buenos Aires nightclub. Oscar Aleman played on a silver National guitar, a dobro, when he was living in Europe, in France. You can see him as part of The Baker Boys on the picture above. The picture on the right is one from 1937 when he played in the band of Frank Big Boy Goudy. When Oscar left Europe in 1940, because the German had occupied France and other parts of Europe, he was stopped at the borders and the German soldier took his metal National guitar, the story tells, because they needed the metal for weapons. So, when Oscar arrived in Argentine he didn't had this instrument any longer. Of course he could have bought himself a new one later in Argentina, but I don't know if he ever recorded again with that instrumewnt. Well up to now, it seems all okay, but during the 1930s Oscar Aleman didn't visit Argentina - he lived, almost the complete decade, in France. So - he could never have played that instrument in some thirties Buenos Aires nightclub. If Jonathan Kellerman has a cassette tape with the song Besame Mucho he refers to the only known recording by Oscar, September 1943 in Buenos Aires, which he recorded with his Quinteto de Swing. Oscar plays on that record an ordinary wooden guitar ( View the picture of the 1940s Quinteto de Swing). So, Jonathan Kellerman suggests things that seem to be inconsistent with what I said before.

Well, it learns ....... never believe a novel writer - he has the freedom to change the truth ..... Although ... I guess I read the book this winter ........ it looks great !! Label of Odeon 45885 with Besame Mucho.

HORACE SILVER: 80 JAAR

Vandaag, 3 september 2008, hoopt Horace Silver zijn 80ste verjaardag te vieren. Hij werd geboren in 1928 in Norwalk Connecticut en ontwikkelde zich tot één van de grootten op het klavier. Zijn samenwerking met Art Blakey leidde in de jaren vijftig tot de oprichting van de Jazz Messengers. Deze groep werd later omgedoopt als The Horace Silver Quintet terwijl Blakey de naam Jazz Messengers bleef gebruiken. Horace Silver heeft een heleboel platen gemaakt, vooral die op het Blue Note label zijn stuk voor stuk juweeltjes. Horace Silver treedt niet meer op; hij leeft teruggetrokken en lijdt aan de ziekte van Alzheimer.

ZILKE - DOOD EN ONTWAKEN:

Gisteren, 1 september 2008, bezochten we het muziektheaterspektakel Zilke, met als ondertitel Dood en Ontwaken, dat, in het kader van het Zeeland Nazomerfestival in de boomgaard bij de Hollandse Hoeve in Goes ( Zeeland) werd gehouden. Het Vlaamse muziektheatergezelschap Walpurgis trad hier op samen met de big band Flat Earth Society. Het stuk, een mix van opera, toneel, humor en dans was imponerend, maar vooral ook de muziek van het twaalfmantellende orkest o.l.v. Peter Vermeersch maakte indruk. De muziek die ze speelden kan het best omschreven worden als "film"muziek ( niet zo gek overigens - ze maakten bijv. de muziek bij de speelfilm Minoes) en te vergelijken met bijvoorbeeld het spel van het Willem Breuker Kollektief. Tijdens deze voorstelling stonden ze garant voor swingend vuurwerk. Het was jammer dat deze dame me toen niet aan de naam van het boek kon helpen. Toen, anderhalf jaar geleden, ontving ik het volgende bericht van David L. Littlefield: Hi Hans. (= Hoi Hans) Found a reference to Oscar Aleman in the following novel: Jonathan Kellerman "Flesh and Blood"(= Ik vond een verwijzing naar Oscar Aleman in de volgende roman: Jonathan Kellerman "Flesh and Blood ) Afgelopen weekend was het raak ..........ik vond het boek tijdens de Kapelse Dag, maar de verwijzing viel tegen .... bovendien neemt Jonathan Kellerman het met de waarheid niet zo nauw, maar ja, een romanschrijver heeft uiteraard die vrijheid ...... En wat gebeurde er afgelopen weekend? In een dorp iets verderop, in Kapelle, aan de rand van de Zak van Zuid Beveland (zo heet die streek nu eenmaal) werd afgelopen weekend de jaarlijkse Kapelse Dag gehouden, een jaarmarkt rondom de kermis, met optredens, ringsteken ( op ongezadelde Zeeuwse koudbloedige trekpaarden - een oud Zeeuws gebruik) en een rommelmarkt. Bij één van de stalletjes met tweedehandsboeken vond ik ..... Flesh and Blood - The Stunning New International Bestseller (= De verbluffend knap geschreven nieuwe internationale bestseller van ) Jonathan Kellerman ( Headline Book Publishing London ( 2001) 566 p. )

Hoewel ik niet voor de volle honderd procent zeker was dat dit het gezochte boek was ( ik kon ook niet, al bladerend, zo snel de naam van Oscar Aleman vinden) kocht ik het boek. Thuis ging ik uiteraard snel op zoek naar de blog, waarin sprake was van het boek en vond het citaat, uiteindelijk niet op blz. 326, maar wel bij hoofdstuk 29. Eindelijk had ik het boek gevonden !!
Toch wil ik enkele kritische kanttekeningen bij het citaat maken. Het lijkt erop dat Jonathan Kellerman niet over de juiste informatie beschikte ( of gewoon een dikke duim had). Hij schrijft: Old recording of Oscar Aleman riffing on a shiny silver National guitar in some thirties Buenos Aires nightclub. ( = Er klonk een oude opname van Oscar Aleman, opgenomen in de één of andere nachtclub in Buenos Aires in de jaren dertig op een glimmende zilveren metalen Nationalgitaar ). Oscar Aleman speelde op een zilverkleurige metalen National gitaar, een lapsteel (= blikken) dobro toen hij in Europa verbleef, in Frankrijk op precies te zijn. Op de foto hierboven zie je Oscar Aleman in de zgn. Baker Boys, het begeleidingsorkest van Josephine Baker begin jaren dertig. Op de langwerpige foto hier boven een afbeelding van Oscar Aleman met lapsteel-gitaar uit ca. 1937, toen hij optrad met Frank Big Boy Goudy. Toen Oscar in 1940 hals over kop Europa ontvluchtte, vanwege de bezetting door de Duitsers, moest hij, zo gaat het verhaal, zijn metalen gitaar afstaan aan de grenswachten, die het metaal nodig hadden voor wapens. Toen Oscar enkele weken later in Argentinië arriveerde had hij geen National-gitaar meer in zijn bezit. Uiteraard zou hij in Argentinië een nieuwe gekocht kunnen hebben, maar hij heeft er volgens mij nooit opnamen meer meegemaakt. Tot nu toe lijkt alles wellicht nog enigzins te kloppen, ware het dat Oscar in de jaren dertig niet in Argentinië is teruggeweest, laat staan er opgetreden of platen gemaakt zou hebben in de één of andere nachtclub in Buenos Aires. Het nummer dat Jonathan Kellerman op zijn cassette heeft staan werd opgenomen in Buenos Aires september 1943 met zijn Quinteto de Swing, waarin Oscar, zie de promotiefoto, gewoon een houten gitaar bespeelde. Concluderend: De suggesties die Kellerman in zijn boek doet kloppen dus niet met de feiten. Van Spike Jones, overigens, is alleen een live opname bekend van Besame Mucho, met Carl Grayson en Red Ingle als de zangers, uit 1944. Wie doet nu wie na?

Wat leren we hieruit? Vertrouw nooit blindelings op de feiten, die een auteur in zijn roman schrijft; hij heeft de vrijheid om de werkelijkheid naar zijn hand te zetten.

En nu maar hopen op een lange koude winter, waarin we ingesneeuwd raken en verplicht een week thuis moeten zitten: dan kan ik ondertussen Flesh and Blood lezen ....... (nu alleen, voor het gemak, de Nederlandse vertaling nog vinden .....)

BETTY BOOP - DON REDMAN CARTOON: 75 YEAR
Seventy-five years ago, today, the first of September 2008, Max Fleischer published his cartoon I Heard, with Betty Boop as the major character. In fact you could label it as a kind of music clip avant la lettre as the cartoon starts with a short film fragment by the Don Redman Orchestra playing the tune I Heard, the band recorded two years earlier for Brunswick. Max Fleischer released some more Betty Boop cartoons which started with a filmed fragment, like the well known Louis Armstrong clip in I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You ( the 16th of December 1932) and Old Man Of The Mountain with the Cab Calloway Band. The latter was released a month before the Redman clip. These were not the only filmed musical opening scenes Fleischer used, but these are best remembered. The next Betty Boop cartoon, for example, released 5 weeks later ( and the one on the first of December 1933) were with a filmed intro by the classical violin player David Rubinoff and his band. For me, the jazzy Betty Boops are great - enjoy the Don Redman appearance in I Heard ( 1st of September 1933).

I think the fragment learns that composing is more easy then conducting, isn't it?

The title was found - the only thing missing was a copy of the book ................. Last weekend the book was found, but it learned that Kellerman's knowledge about this Argentine jazz guitar player is limited. Read about it in Flesh and Blood tomorrow.
