Clark Terry-Bob Brookmeyer Quintet

The 2CD album, released by Lonehill Jazz titled Clark Terry - Bob Brookmeyer Quintet, The Complete Studio Recordings (LonehillJazz LHJ10199 ) is an album a lot of jazz fans have been waiting for. Although the recordings previous had been released on LP, these albums were rare to find; now all studio tracks, recorded in the mid 60s are available.
Clark Terry, trumpet player and master on the flugelhorn (one of my favorite instruments) was born in December 1920 and started his career in the bands of Count Basie and Charlie Barnet. In the 1950s he worked with Duke Ellington, and specialized in Ellington's suites. When he left Ellington he became a staff member of NBC, before he joined the group of Bob Brookmeyer.
Bob Brookmeyer, born in Kansas City December 1929, took up the valve trombone in the early 1950s (he also played the piano) in the piano-less quartet of Gerry Mulligan, where he took over the place of Chet Baker. In 1961 the owner of The Half Note asked Bob Brookmeyer to form a band to play in his club. Bob asked for Clark Terry, but NBC didn't allow Terry to become just a member; so he became one of the leaders and his name came in the band's name: Clark Terry-Bob Brookmeyer Quintet. They played in the club for years, without actually making records. In November 1964 they recorded for a Mainstream album labeled Quintet. Some great tracks are Blindman Blindman, a typically Herbie Hancock composition (á la Watermelon Man ) and the Thelonious Monk composition Straight No Chaser.
A surprise is the track Tete A Tete with a great arranged opening and a surprise: a stride piano solo by Roger Kellaway. While listening to this album it feels good to learn how good the sounds of these two men match together; the flügelhorn and the trombone ( Bob Brookmeyer plays the valve trombone); a great cooperation. The band made two more sessions the years to follow. One of the tracks, the well known Battle Hymn of the Republic, was, according the liner notes, the favorite of Frank Canterino, the chief-in chief of the Half Note: He would come out of the kitchen when they played that tune and as Clark said they called the tune "Getting Frank Out Of The Kitchen".
This 2CD, with all quintet studio recordings, made by this great Clark Terry-Bob Brookmeyer combo contains a lot of good music, played by a group that became famous for his live performances. I love to share with you a fragment of a concert made during an European trip in February 1965, where they played at the Jazz 625 TV-show, presented by Humphrey Lyttelton. You can see Clark Terry on the flugelhorn, Bob Brookmeyer on the valve trombone, Laurie Holloway at the piano, Rick Laird on bass and Alan Ganley on drums. Enjoy Straight No Chaser.

De dubbel-CD van Lonehill Jazz The Clark Terry - Bob Brookmeyer Quintet, The Complete Studio Recordings (LonehillJazz LHJ10199 ) is zo'n plaat waar jazzfans al jaren op hebben gewacht. Hoewel de opnamen al eens op LP verschenen, waren ze lastig te vinden - nu zijn alle studio-opnamen uit het midden van de jaren zestig opnieuw uitgebracht.

Clark Terry, trompettist en meester op de bügel (één van mijn favoriete instrumenten) werd geboren in december 1920 en begon zijn carriere in bands van Count Basie en Charlie Barnet. Midden jaren vijftig werkte hij bij Duke Ellington, waarin hij zich vooral specialiseerde in zijn suites. Hij verliet het orkest van Duke Ellington voor een baan in de staf van NBC. Daar zat hij, toen Bob Brookmeyer hem vroeg om lid te worden van zijn band. Bob Brookmeyer, geboren in Kansas City december 1929 begon met de trombone ter hand te nemen ( hij speelt ook piano) begin jaren vijftig in het pianoloze kwartet van Gerry Mulligan, waar hij de plaats van Chet Baker innam. In 1961 vroeg de eigenaar van de Half Note hem om een eigen band op te richten waarmee hij in de club kon spelen. Bob vroeg Clark Terry, die alleen mee mocht doen van NBC als hij één van de leiders kon worden; de Clark Terry-Bob Brookmeyer Quintet was geboren. Ze speelden in de club met veel succes zonder dat het echt tot opnamen kwam. In november 1964 namen ze hun eerste plaat op voor het Mainstream label, getiteld Quintet. Een schitterend nummer is Blindman Blindman, een typisch Herbie Hancock compositie, waarin je zijn Watermelon Man in terug hoort en de Thelonious Monk compositie Straight No Chaser.
Het openingsnummer is een sterke start: Tete A Tete, met daarin een sterk gearrangeerde opening en een verrassende stride-piano solo van Roger Kellaway. Als je naar deze plaat luistert voel je hoe goed beide instrumenten bij elkaar passen; de bügel van Terry en de ventieltrombone van Brookmeyer. De band maakte in de daaropvolgende jaren nog twee opnamesessies. Eén van die nummers, het bekende Battle Hymn of the Republic was het favoriete nummer van Frank Canterino, de uitbater van de Half Note: He would come out of the kitchen, when we played it and as Clark said they called the tune "Getting Frank Out Of The Kitchen". Deze dubbel-CD, met alle quintet studio-opnamen bevat een prachtig overzicht van dit schitterende quintet, dat beroemd was om zijn live uitvoeringen. Ik vond een mooi fragment opgenomen tijdens een Europese tournee in de BBC TV-studio, waar Humphrey Lyttelton zijn Jazz 625 programma's opnam. Het nummer Straight No Chaser werd opgenomen in februari 1965 met Clark Terry op de bügel, Bob Brookmeyer op de ventieltrombone, Laurie Holloway piano, Rick Laird bas en Alan Ganley slagwerk.

Clark Terry's Fluegelin' the Blues

Not able to make my daily web log due to physical reasons I could listened to some records and play some DVDs that needed attention. And yesterday the program scedule for the 2007 North Sea Jazz Festival was in my post box - I'll be back about that later.

One of the records I listened to was a Riverside 33rpm record, with a great cover design by Paul Bacon, I bought some weeks ago in Wageningen (centre of the Netherlands) at the Doctor Jazz Reunion. The LP is titles New Blue Horns and contains three tunes on each side with previously unissued versions of the blues by Chet Baker - Kenny Dorham - Nat Adderley - Clark Terry and Blue Mitchell. All tunes are from 1958. I was fascinated by the first track, titled Fluegelin' The Blues played by Clark Terry, on the fluegelhorn of course. This previously unissued tune, this LP was released in the late 1950s, so what's in a name, Fluegelin' the Blues ( also titled as Flügelin' or Flueglin' the Blues ) was played by the Clark Terry -Thelonious Monk Quartet during its May 1958 session - Ten tunes were recorded, of which eight were published on the In Orbit album RLP 12-271. (Why is this album not in my collection?). One tune was rejected and Fluegelin The Blues became part of this New Blue Horn album ( RLP 12-294). When I heard the tune for the very first time I was fascinated by the relaxed way the musicians, Clark Terry on the flügelhorn, Thelonious Monk at the piano, in a modest way, Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, play the blues. I like the way Clark Terry plays this great instrument, the right instrument for playing ballads. I found some fragments of Clark Terry playing the flügelhorn ( in the second fagment he plays the trumpet in a great ballad) in some late 1950s performances featuring Phil Woods on alto sax and Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, both are scedulded for the North Sea Jazz Festival July 2007 in Rotterdam. I'm sure you like it !!

Terug aan het roer na een korte onderbreking, alhoewel het typen nog maar met één vinger gaat, dankzij een chirurgische ingreep aan mijn hand. Bedankt Jo voor passen op de winkel terwijl ik er niet was - je bijdragen waren zoals altijd verrassend en interessant. Vergeet trouwens niet zijn interessante Choro web log te bezoeken met daarin zijn wekelijkse bijdrage.

Omdat ik door de operatie niet zelf mijn blog hoefde te maken had ik tijd om platen te draaien en DVD's te bekijken, die daarop al een tijdje lagen te wachten. Bovendien viel gisteren het programma voor het North Sea Jazz Festival op de mat voor deze zomer - genoeg te genieten dus ...... Ik kom daar uiteraard later op terug. Onder de platen die lagen te wachten was een Riverside LP met een schitterend hoesontwerp van Paul Bacon, die ik een aantal weken geleden vond op de Doctor Jazz Reunie in Wageningen. De LP is getiteld New Blue Horns en bevat drie nummers aan elke kant met eerder onuitgebrachte versies van de blues gespeeld door Chet Baker - Kenny Dorham - Nat Adderley - Clark Terry en Blue Mitchell. Alle nummers zijn opgenomen in 1958. Ik raakte geboeid door het eerste nummer, Fluegelin' The Blues. gespeeld door Clark Terry, op de bügel uiteraard. Dit eerder onuitgebrachte nummer ( wat heet - deze LP werd eind jaren vijftig door Riverside uitgebracht) werd opgenomen als Fluegelin' the Blues ( ook wel als Flügelin' of Flueglin' the Blues ) gespeeld door het Clark Terry -Thelonious Monk Quartet tijdens een opnamesessie uit mei 1958 - Tien nummers, waarvan er acht op het In Orbit album ( RLP 12-271) werden uitgebracht; één nummer werd afgekeurd en Fluegelin The Blues kwam terecht op dit New Blue Horn album ( RLP 12-294). (Waarom heb ik die In Orbit plaat nog niet in mijn collectie?). Toen ik het nummer voor de eerste keer hoorde, de ontspannen manier waarop Clark Terry het bluesthema op de bügel speelt, met Thelonious Monk in een bescheiden rol achter de toetsen, Sam Jones op bas en Philly Joe Jones op drums, voelde ik dat jazz zo moest zijn. De manier waarop Clark Terry dit instrument bespeelt, een instrument uitermate geschikt voor het spelen van ballads, is schitterend. ik vond een paar fragmenten uit diezelfde periode waarop je Clark Terry op bügel kunt horen ( in het tweede fragment speelt hij trompet in een schitterende ballad) en zien met Phil Woods op altsax en Bob Brookmeyer op trombone, beide geprogrammeerd voor Rotterdam deze zomer. Genieten dus !!

Hootin' The Blues

There are but few blues players I like to hear. Lonnie Johnson , in fact, is the only one I love to play now-and-then thanks to his great guitar playing and his duets with Eddie Lang. Except some compilation CDs, like the interesting Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, I don't have no blues in my collection. When I find new records for my collection, there probably will be no blues in my supermarket basket, until ................... some weeks ago. When I came home with some very cheap priced 4 CD sets of Quadromania I realised I bought one played by Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. I guess I must have mixed up the names to Sonny Clark and Clark Terry, Clifford Brown and Howard McGhee: You're gettin' old, daddy !! But of course, I gave the record a change and played the music and liked the way Sonny Terry played his harmonica. In fact, I heard something familiar. The way Sonny Terry played his instrument reminded me to the days I was a young adult. In those days I had one blues LP, I played regularly and I liked that one, although I couldn't remember the name of the artist by now. I remembered that he played a tune on harmonica, maybe titled Locomotice Blues or something like that: "Heading up for Chicago" was shouted somewhere during that track, I thought to remember. I decided to make a blog out of this subject and started to find some information and film fragments. I found some performances of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee playing Hootin' The Blues and then the penny dropped. I recognized the tune as one of the tracks of that LP.

Well, the 4CD set of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee gets a place in my collection, being a landmark in my personal musical development.

Sonny Terry was born in Greensboro, Georgia and became blind due to two accidents in his youth. He learned to play the harmonica. In the 1930s he played with Blind Boy Fuller for some years and made his first recording due to a succesfull performance in John Hammonds From Spiritual To Swing concert in Carnegie Hall. In 1939 he met Brownie McGhee and formed a duo that has been very succesfully. Although Sonny Terry made a lot of other records with other accompanists, his cooperation with Brownie McGhee would last until the end. Sonny Terry is a harmonica virtuoso with a recognizable style. He combines his voice and the harmonica in an easy to remember way. His skill at combining voice and harmonica with falsetto whoops and holers, alternating with the wails of the instrument played crossed was unsurpassed in the region, Paul Oliver said in his book The Story Of The Blues; a book that should in my nostalgic list too, as I have it for 40 years.

I love to share some great fragments. First a kind of slide show with pictures of Sonny Terry's life and second two fragments of the same song, Hootin' ( the) Blues at different occasions, probably somewhere in the 1960s.

Er zijn maar een paar bluesmuzikanten die ik graag hoor. Één ervan is Lonnie Johnson die ik waardeer om zijn gitaarspel, alleen of in duo met Eddie Lang. Veel meer dan nog wat verzamelcds, zoals de interessante The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of, heb ik niet in mijn verzameling. Je zult me dan ook niet gemakkelijk kunnen betrappen op een blues-plaat in mijn supermarkt mandje, tot ......... een paar weken geleden. Ik had me laten verleiden een aantal goedkoop geprijsde 4 CD sets van Quadromania aan te schaffen en toen ik thuis kwam realiseerde ik me dat er een bluesCD tussen beland was, gespeeld door het Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee duo. Ik denk dat ik in een moment van bewustzijnsvernauwing namen verhaspeld had tot Sonny Clark en Clark Terry, Clifford Brown en Howard McGhee: Hoe dan ook ..... ; het zij zo - 't zal de leeftijd zal wezen !! Natuurlijk krijgt zo'n plaat nog een kans en speelde ik hem en ik kon het mondharmonica spel van Sonny Terry best wel waarderen; sterker nog - de typische manier van spelen, de mondharmonica afgewisseld door allerlei keelklanken en woorden, kwam me heel bekend voor. Ik had vroeger één blues LP en die moet van Sonny Terry zijn geweest, al herinner ik me de naam niet. Ik herinner me dat er een nummer op stond waarin hij een trein nabootste "Heading up for Chicago" werd er ergens geroepen geloof ik en als ik het een naam moest geven denk ik vaag aan Locomotice Blues. Gisteren besloot ik een blog te wijden aan dit onderwerp en toen ik naar informatie en filmfragmenten zocht vond ik verschillende opnamen van Sonny Terry en Brownie McGhee die het nummer Hootin' The Blues speelden en toen viel het kwartje; dat nummer stond ook op die bewuste LP.

De 4CD set met Sonny Terry en Brownie McGhee mag in mijn collectie blijven als een onderdeeltje in mijn muzikale ontwikkeling, zullen we maar zeggen. Hij combineert de vaardigheid om met zijn harmonica en met hoge kopstem geluiden en klanken afwisselend te gebruiken; een manier van spelen, die ongebruikelijjk was in die tijd, schrijft Paul Oliver in zijn boek The Story Of The Blues; een boek dat eigenlijk ook thuis hoort in het lijstje met nostalgische boeken, aangezien ik het ook al veertig jaar heb.

Ik heb een paar filmfragmenten gevonden waarin het duo het nummer Hootin' ( the) Blues vertolkt, waarschijnlijk in de jaren zestig, voorafgegaan door een diavoorstelling waarin het leven van Sonny Terry wordt belicht.
