Arturo Sandoval - Havana 1986

Last year, 2007, a great 2CD was released by Cuban born trumpet player Arturo Sandoval. This album was called Arturo Sandoval Live At The Hotel Nacional Havana 1986. It was released by Yemaya Records.

I learned about Arturo Sandoval thanks to a great recording, titled Tumbaito, a record made in 1986 in Spain. If you have heard Arturo Sandoval playing his trumpet I'm sure you will agree that he is very special on the instrument. His technique is extremely developed - his tone is clear and he can play in both the lower or upper register of his instrument and when you think that one has reached the highest possible tone on the trumpet, there is always one higher by Arturo Sandoval. In a previous blog I quoted the liner notes that read: There is hardly any other trumpeter who can push out the notes in such rapid succession or with such precision, and surely no other who can reach the phenomenal heights in which he moves. His music is overwhelming - very energetic and it must be a great experience to hear him playing live in front of his orchestra. In a previous blog I told about his life and career, about Dizzy Gillespie, his idol and "father in jazz", who brought his music to the world. He lives now in the US and last year he won with his last album, Rumba Palace, named after his night club in Florida, where he plays his music, the Latin Grammy in the category Best Latin Jazz Album.

The album I mentioned above, the 1986 live album made in Havana, contains Arturo Sandoval with an all-Cuban crew, featuring: Arturo Sandoval on trumpet and flügelhorn (and piano), Hilario Duran on piano, Jorge Reyes bass, Jorge Luis Chicoy guitar, Reynaldo Valera percussion and Reinaldo Garcia drums. In 1986 Arturo Sandoval had a weekly gig at the famous Hotel Nacional, in the so-called Libertad room in Havana, Cuba. This 2CD contains a transcription of one of his memorable 1986 concerts. As it was made two month before the Spanish Tumbaito both albums contain the same personel and some equal tunes, like Dizzy Gillespie's tune A Night In Tunesia, his own compositions Nuestro Blues and Relax and the tune Los Elefantes by Eddie Louise. He also performas two classical pieces from Bach and Hummel and a tribute to his master on the trumpet Dizzy Gillespie: Blues For Gillespie. The Havana concert, the 2CD album, brings one and a half hour of high-voltage live music, the shoot sparks will fill your room: mind the neighbours should be the subtitle !! This 2CD is well designed and has some excellent liner notes in English and Spanish from Maria Elena Mendiola, professor at the Cuban Art Institute for Higher Learning in Havana.

Ik leerde de muziek van Arturo Sandoval kennen dankzij een prachtige plaat getiteld Tumbaito opgenomen in 1986 in Spanje. Als je ooit Arturo Sandoval op de trompet hebt gehoord, zul je met me eens zijn dat hij iets bijzonders doet met dit instument. Zijn techniek is buitengewoon goed ontwikkeld, zijn toon is helder, zowel in het lage als het hoge register van zijn instrument en als je denkt dat nu wel de hoogte toon gehaald heeft die mogelijk is op de trompet, gaat Arturo er schijnbaar met gemak overheen. In een eerdere bijlage citeerde ik: There is hardly any other trumpeter who can push out the notes in such rapid succession or with such precision, and surely no other who can reach the phenomenal heights in which he moves. ( = Er is geen andere trompettist te vinden, die zijn noten zo hard kan aanzetten in zo'n rap tempo, met zo'n fabelachtige precisie, zich vooral bewegend in de hoge registers, dan Arturo Sandoval ). Zijn muziek pakt je helemaal in - zit vol energie en het moet een onuitwisbare indruk maken als je hem een keer live zou kunnen horen spelen voor zijn orkest. Ik beschreef in een eerdere blog al uitgebreid zijn carriere met de ontdekking van zijn muziek door zijn geestelijk vader en inspirator Dizzy Gillespie. Hij leeft en werkt nu in de Verenigde Staten en won onlangs een Latin Grammy in de categorie Best Latin Jazz album voor zijn plaat Rumba Palace, genoemd naar zijn club in Florida.

De plaat, hierboven genoemd, de live opnamen gemaakt in Havana in 1986, bevat Arturo Sandoval's band met een geheel Cubaanse bezetting: Arturo Sandoval op trompet en bügel (en piano), Hilario Duran op piano, Jorge Reyes bas, Jorge Luis Chicoy gitaar, Reynaldo Valera percussie en Reinaldo Garcia slagwerk. In 1986 had Arturo Sandoval een wekelijks optreden in de Libertad zaal van het beroemde Hotel Nacional in de Cubaanse hoofdstad Havana. Deze dubbel-CD bevat opnamen van één van die memorabele concerten. Aangezien dit concert opgenomen werd twee maanden voor de Spaanse opnamen, is de bezetting identiek en staan er een aantal dezelfde nummers op, zoals Dizzy Gillespie's nummer A Night In Tunesia, eigen composities als Nuestro Blues en Relax, en de compositie van Eddie Louise getiteld Los Elefantes. Deze dubbel-CD is mooi uitgevoerd en goed verzorgd en de tekst van Maria Elena Mendiola, professor aan de Cuban Art Institute for Higher Learning in Havana. in het Engels en Spaans is informatief. Arturo Sandoval y su Grupo

A few months ago my fascinating for the Cuban born trumpet player Arturo Sandoval was born. He is a brilliant trumpet player, especially in the high range and can play very fast. His music seems to explode on certain tracks. He was born in 1949 in Artemisa, a small place on the island of Cuba as the son of a car machanic and started to play the trumpet at 12. He founded later, together with now famous musicians like Chucho Valdes, the great piano player, who was part of Roy Hargrove's Crisol band and Paquito D'Rivera, the great orchestra leader, the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, later renamed as Irakere, the best band Cuba ever had. The story how he was discovered by good-old nestor Dizzy Gillespie has been described extensively in a previous blog.

ARTURO SANDOVAL y su grupo (1981)

During the 1980s, he was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie, the rest of the world could hear him playing only during the rare concerts he was allowed to give outside Cuba. The Castro governement only let him play as a kind of ambassador at certain jazz festivals en with tours with the BBC Orchestra and its Russian counterpart, the Leningrad Philharmonic, both classical orchestras. Other contacts were forbidden. In 1990 he left Cuba for a tour with Dizzy's United Nation Orchestra and seeked political asylum at the American Embassy in Rome. He now lives in Florida, where he has a jazz club. He is still very active in music. I found some fragments of Arturo where you can learn more about his career nowadays. You can hear him at a concert with the United Nation Orchestra during the 1990s, but also in a fragment where he introduces us to his club and his last recording. These fragments are to be found at the end of this blog.

ARTURO SANDOVAL Y SU GRUPO (1982)

Thanks to a new release, titled Arturo Sandoval & His Group you can learn more about the recordings he made in the early 1980s, during the period that he had left Irakere and started his own band, Arturo Sandoval y su grupo. He made two recordings, rare in our part of the world, both titled Arturo Sandoval y su grupo ( one has the word grupo in small letters (1981) and the other one GRUPO in capitals (1982)). These two records are both reissued on this CD and gives us the opportunity to hear Arturo Sandoval playing in an early phase of his career, with Cuban musicans only, before he became famous in the US. It contains a lot of latin rhythms like the salsa, club soul influences and a jazzy flavour. It sounds, to my surprise, very modern, as its grooves feel as if I'm listening to a modern latin fushion band. Of course you can hear Arturo with his trumpet playing his famous up tempo pieces with high notes, but also some groovy tracks or sweet instrumentals. You should try to find this early Sandoval releases if you like this kind of latin music.

Enige tijd geleden raakte ik gefascineerd door het spel van de in Cuba geboren trompettist Arturo Sandoval. Hij is een briljant instrumentalist, herkenbaar aan zijn vele noten, vaak in de hogere regionen, die zijn muziek als het ware laat exploderen. Hij werd geboren in 1949 in Artemisa, een klein plekje op het eiland Cuba als zoon van een automonteur en begon op zijn twaalfde met trompetlessen. Hij was medeoprichter, samen met andere, nu grote Cubaanse namen, als Chucho Valdes, een geweldig pianist, die o.a.bij Roy Hargrove in zijn Crisol band speelde, en Paquito D'Rivera, de grote orkestleider, van het Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna, later beter bekend geworden als Irakere, de beste band van Cuba. Het verhaal, hoe Arturo Sandoval ontdekt werd door Dizzy Gillespie heb ik uitvoerig beschreven in een eerdere blog.

Tijdens de jaren tachtig, nadat Arturo ontdekt was door Dizzy, kon de rest van de wereld hem mondjesmaat leren kennen, omdat de Cubaanse regering hem alleen, als een soort ambassadeur, liet spelen op enkele grote jazzfestivals en op tournees met het BBC Orchestra en haar Russische tegenhanger de Leningrad Philharmonic, beide klassieke orkesten. In 1990 kon hij Cuba voorgoed verlaten door, tijdens een tour met het United Nation Orchestra politiek asiel aan te vragen in de Amerikaanse ambassade in Rome. Hij woont nu, met zijn familie, in Florida waar hij o.a. een jazzclub runt. Ik heb, onder aan dit blog, wat filmfragmenten geplaatst, waar je nog eens kennis kunt maken met zijn manier van spelen ( in de jaren negentig met de United Nation Band van nestor Dizzy Gillespie) en met zijn huidige activiteiten, zoals zijn jazzclub en een nieuwe plaat die hij onlangs lanceerde.

Dankzij een nieuwe CD uitgave, eenvoudigweg getiteld Arturo Sandoval & His Group kunnen we nu kennismaken met twee platen die hij begin jaren tachtig maakte, in de periode dat hij gestopt van met Irakere en in de Verenigde Staten nog niet bekend was. Hij maakte twee platen, beide voor het gemak getiteld Arturo Sandoval y su grupo ( voor de discografen onder ons: grupo ( 1981) en GRUPO (1982)). Deze twee platen geven ons de kans om hem te horen spelen tijdens een vroege fase in zijn carriere met een geheel uit Cubanen bestaande bezetting. Je vind er muziek vol latijnse ritmes, zoals de salsa, club soul elementen, overgoten met een jazzy sausje. Het klinkt, tot mijn verbazing, heel erg modern en het lijkt als of ik luister naar één van die hedendaagse latin-fusion bands. Natuurlijk laat Sandoval horen dat hij razendsnel kan spelen en dat hij ook toen al in het hoge register te keer kon gaan op een manier dat alles lijkt te ontploffen. Maar je vindt er ook meer groovy en soms langzame, zoetige stukken bij en in het laatste nummer Popurrit Mexicano wordt het zelfs even carnaval. Kortom - een plaat die je niet moet laten lopen als je van dit soort klanken houdt.

Last night I played myself this great recording by Arturo Sandoval , titled Tumbaito. Tumbaito is the diminutive word for Tumbao, which is a certain rhythmical patern for the bass or the conga known as Tumbadora. Arturo Sandoval is a Cuban born trumpet player, here with his Cuban Jazz Masters. The music on this CD is overwhelming as Arturo Sandoval is a very energetic trumpet player. The liner notes say: There is hardly any other trumpeter who can push out the notes in such rapid succession or with such precision, and surely no other who can reach the phenomenal heights in which he moves. Somewhere else I read: Mind your neighbours - keep your windows closed. It's the same thing all over again !!

Arturo Sandoval was born in 1949 in a small city near Havana ( Cuba) and as a child he joined the local wind band and started in the percussion section, but in fact he wanted to play the trumpet. When he bought himself a small pocket trumpet he learned to play the instrument and finally graduated at the Escuela Nacional de Arte. As an 18 years old boy he became a member of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna and in 1974 he founded Irakere, with Chucho Valdes and Paquito D'Rivera. Chucho Valdes is not unknown to me; I heard him in concert as a member of Roy Hargrove's Crisol band that visited the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( southwest part of the Netherlands) November 1997. This band combined Cuban rhythms with jazz and fushion. In 1977 something special happened. Due to the 1961 missile crisis between the US and Cuba, travelling between these two countries was impossible, but in 1977, for the first time since that crisis, the passengers of a Caribbean jazz cruise were allowed to leave the ship in Havana. One of the musicians aboard was Dizzy Gillespie, who later told Leonard Feather that he felt like Christopher Columbus - as if he discovered a new country. Both Dizzy as Stan Getz, who was also one of the musicians aboard, left the gangplank while playing their instruments. The people on the quay applauded and when they had their welcome Dizzy was driven around by car all along Cuba to listen to the musicians. He was very surprised by what he heard and when he gathered a concert of Irakere later that day he learned that the driver of his car happened to be the trumpet player - and what a great one. Since that moment, when Dizzy had heard Arturo playing (who was of course Dizzy's driver), they where together and Sandoval admired Dizzy. He learned a lot of him about jazz, they played a lot together and although Arturo didn't speak one word English, he became one of Dizzy's followers. One of the fragments below shows Arturo and Dizzy playing together during this 1977 Cuban trip.
Dizzy was impressed by what he had heard and seen in Cuba and the next year he invited Arturo Sandoval to become a member of his United Nation Orchestra and Irakere was invited to the 1978 Newport Jazz Festival. This was the start of an international career for Arturo Sandoval. He got a contract from Columbia Records and in 1981 he founded his own band, simply named Arturo Sandoval y su Grupo. With this group he toured around and at the end of the tour they recorded in Madrid the album Tumbaito (16 - 18 November 1986). A great album, as I said before, overwhelming, but also with some relaxed moments. If you like to enjoy his ballads, listen to tunes like Los Elefantes and Relax (what's in a name); if you love to hear his screech and shout try Nuestro Blues or Tunisias Blues ( but mind the window), A great recording by a great Cuban-born trumpet player ( he's now an American citizen), still active in music.

Gisteravond heb ik de schitterende CD van Arturo Sandoval weer eens gedraaid, getiteld Tumbaito. Tumbaito is het verkleinwoord voor Tumbao of Tumbadora, wat weer een bepaald ritmisch patroon is in de Cubaanse muziek gespeeld door de bas en de conga's. Arturo Sandoval is een in Cuba geboren trompettist, hier spelend met zijn eigen groep, genoemd his Cuban Jazz Masters. De muziek op de CD is overweldigend, want Arturo Sandoval is een trompettist met heel veel energie, veel harde hoge noten en een razend tempo. Er is geen andere trompettist te vinden, die zijn noten zo hard kan aanzetten in zo'n rap tempo, met zo'n fabelachtige precisie, zich vooral bewegend in de hoge registers, dan Arturo Sandoval, roemt de CD-tekst. Ergens anders las ik: Hou vooral je ramen dicht voor de buren !. Het komt op het zelfde neer; je bent gewaarschuwd. Arturo Sandoval werd geboren in 1949 in een klein stadje vlak bij Havana ( Cuba) en als kind mocht hij bij de plaatselijke muziekvereniging, waar hij, bij gebrek aan iets anders, terecht kwam bij het slagwerk. Toen hij zelf ergens een trompet had gekocht, kreeg hij les en toen hij achttien jaar was studeerde hij af aan de Escuela Nacional de Arte. Hij werd lid van het Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna en in 1974 richtte hij. samen met Chucho Valdes en Paquito D'Rivera de band Irakere op. Chucho Valdes is voor mij geen onbekende: hij speelde mee bij Roy Hargrove's Crisol band tijdens het concert in Porgy en Bess ( Terneuzen) in november 1997. In 1977 gebeurde er iets belangrijks in Sandoval's leven. Sinds de raketcrisis van 1961 tussen Cuba en Amerika was verkeer tussen beide landen onmogelijk, maar in 1977 scheen er wat lucht te komen in de verhoudingen: de passagiers van een Caraïbische Jazz Cruise mochten in Havana van boord. Eén van die musici was Dizzy Gillespie, die, zoals hij later tegen Leonard Feathers vertelde, zich voelde als Christopher Columbus, die een nieuwe wereld ging ontdekken. Samen met Stan Getz, ook aan boord, gingen de twee al spelend op hun instrumenten de loopplank af onder luid applaus. Toen de ontvangst achter de rug was werd Dizzy rondgereden over het eiland om overal musici en bands te beluisteren. Hij was heel verbaasd toen hij 's avonds, tijdens een optreden van Irakere, ontdekte dat zijn chauffeur de trompettist bleek te zijn ( en nog een hele goeie ook !!). Vanaf dat moment waren Dizzy en Arturo ( hij was natuurlijk Dizzy's chauffeur) onafscheidelijk en leerde Arturo, hoewel hij geen woord Engels sprak, van Dizzy alles over jazzmuziek wat hij wilde weten. Ze speelden veel samen en Arturo werd één van Dizzy's trouwste navolgers. Eén van de filmfragmenten die ik gevonden heb laat Dizzy ( op piano) en Arturo ( op trompet) zien, bij het bezoek aan Cuba.

Dizzy was onder de indruk van wat hij gezien en gehoord had in Cuba en het volgende jaar nodigde hij Arturo Sandoval uit om lid te worden van zijn United Nation Orchestra en nodigde hij Irakere uit voor een optreden tijdens het Newport Jazz Festival. Dit was voor Arturo Sandoval de start voor een internationale carriere. Hij kreeg een contract bij Columbia Records. In 1981 formeerde hij zijn eigen band, eenvoudig weg Arturo Sandoval y su Grupo genoemd. Ze maakten een uitgebreide tournee, die eindigde in Spanje. Hier werd, op 16 t/m 18 november 1986, de plaat Tumbaito opgenomen; een fantastische plaat, zoals gezegd - overweldigend, maar ook met wat rustiger nummers, zoals Los Elefantes en Relax ( what's in a name !!); Als je van het meer heftige werk houdt, het screech and shout, zoals dat zo mooi in het Engels heet, kom je ook ruimschoots aan je trekken. Beluister maar eens Nuestro Blues of Tunisias Blues ( maar denk aan de ramen ) Een schitterende plaat, gemaakt door deze voormalig Cubaanse ( hij is nu Amerikaans staatsburger) trompettist, die nog steeds actief is in de muziek.

Ik heb een tweetal filmfragmenten gevonden waarin Arturo Sandoval te zien en te horen is met Dizzy ( met zijn United Nation Orchestra en samen in Cuba.
