Brunswick pictures suggestions

In a previous blog I posted a request from Bruce R. Young of the MOCAPS ( The Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society ) who asked to identify two Brunswick artists on a picture he received from the granddaughter of a former Brunswick Engineer. The image above is a cut out of the original one made by Riel. I received several suggestions I love to share with you. Mind that I won't give you a final judgement about who-is-who; that's up to Bruce and his MOCAPS or to the reader. I'll only give some of your suggestions.

Who is the man with the wavy hair?

Bruce R. Young suggested in his first message that this man could be Nick Lucas (1892 - 1932). Some of you agreed that it could have been The Crooning Troubadour, although some cast doubts on it. Mark Berreford says: The singer could be Lucas, but looks thinner. Jerry Priessen schrijft: Wavy, golvend haar was IN in die tijd. Mijn opa in de jaren 30 had het trouwens ook zo. Artiesten deden zelfs krulspelden in om maar golvend haar te krijgen ( = Mind that wavy hair was very popular in those days; even my grandfather from te 1930s had it. Artists even used curlers to get it wavy.)

The Radio Franks

Bryan White suggested: I don't know for sure since I've never seen a photo of them, but I wonder if your mystery men might be Frank White and Frank Bessinger: "The Radio Franks." They were a vocal duo that recorded often for Brunswick in the late 1920s; usually just two voices and piano. Just a thought based on the content of the photo. Well, I found an image of these two men, The Radio Franks, and posted it above. I love the parting in Frank White's hair. Well, it might be possible. Bob Smith however suggested: The only other artist who resembles the picture (nose, ears, and wavy hair style) that I could find is Yank Lawson. He recorded for Brunswick in 1935 with Clark Randall's orchestra. In which case the pianist might be Gil Bowers (but I have no picture of him).

The mysterious piano player

There were some more suggestions according the piano player. Of course it could have been Frank Bessinger as suggested by Bryan White or Gil Bowers as Bob Smith thought. Glen Richard says: I'm not sure the vocalist is Nick Lucas, but I'm pretty sure the pianist is Anson Weeks, who did record for Brunswick in the early 30's. I wonder if "Riel" was a West Coast photographer - Weeks was well-known in San Francisco. I ( Hans) found a photo of Anson Weeks, posted below, and it has a striking resemblance in my opinion.

Mark Berresford suggests; I think the pianist is Phil Ohman, a regular Brunswick pianist and frequently credited as such (e.g. Marion Harris, Margaret Young etc) - see pic below (man on right - sorry it's not a better picture).

In een eerdere bijdrage vroeg ik hulp bij een verzoek dat ik ontving van Bruce R. Young, president van de MOCAPS ( The Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society ) die vroeg om identificatie van twee anonieme Brunswick artiesten op een foto die hij kreeg van de kleindochter van een voormalige Brunswick medewerker. De foto hierboven is een uitsnede uit de originele foto gemaakt door Riel. Ik ontving verschillende suggesties en oplossingen, die ik hier met jullie wil delen. Uiteraard ga ik geen eindoordeel vellen over de namen die genoemd worden - dat laat ik aan Bruce R. Young over en zijn medewerkers. En uiteraard hebben jullie ook een mening !! Ik leg hier alleen de suggesties neer.

Wie is de man met het golvend haar?

Bruce R. Young suggereert in zijn oproep dat de man naast de piano Nick Lucas (1892 - 1932) geweest zou kunnen zijn. Sommigen waren het hier wel mee eens, maar anderen hadden zo hun twijfels of de man naast de piano wel The Crooning Toubadour zou kunnen zijn. Mark Berreford bijvoorbeeld schrijft: The singer could be Lucas, but looks thinner (De zanger zou Lucas kunnen zijn, maar lijkt hier magerder). Bedenk, schrijft Jerry Priessen, dat gegolfd haar in die tijd erg populair was - zelfs mijn opa die in de jaren dertig leefde, had het; sommige artiesten gebruikten zelfs krulspelden om wat golfjes te krijgen

Het was een zangduo dat regelmatig voor Brunswick opnamen maakte eind jaren twintig.) Wel, ik vond wel een foto van de Radio Franks, zij het wat vaag. De scheiding in het haar van Frank White maakt me jaloers. Bob Smith suggereert dat, afgaand op de uiterlijke kenmerken van de zanger ( neus, oren en golvend haar) dat we wel eens te maken zouden kunnen hebben met Yank Lawson. Hij nam platen op voor Brunswick in 1935 met het orkest van Clark Randall. Als dat zo zou zijn, dan zou de pianist Gil Bowers zijn ( maar daar heb ik geen foto van).

De onbekende pianist

Er waren wat meer suggesties t.a.v. de pianist. Frank Bessinger, zoals genoemd door Bryan White of Gil Bowers zoals Bob Smith schreef. ( Ik ben niet zeker van Nick Lucas, maar ik ben zeker dat de pianist Anson Weeks moet zijn, die begin jaren dertig voor Brunswick opnamen maakte.), maar hij vraagt zich af of de fotograaf Riel wel een fotograaf van de westkust was, aangezien Weeks bekend is uit San Francisco. Ik vond een foto van Anson Weeks, hieronder afgebeeld, en ik moet zeggen ............... de gelijkenis is opvallend !!

Artists indentification

Bruce R. Young, president of the MOCAPS ( The Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society ) contacted me with the request to identify the artists on a Brunswick studio picture. As he suggestedthat one of the artists might be Nick Lucas ( 1892-1982), who also recorded for Durium, he contacted me. I adopted his suggestion that it might be Nick Lucas and suggested to post it at my Keep swinging web log so that the visitors of the blog could help solving this puzzle.
Bruce wrote: This rare one of a kind photo surfaced recently when our Organization MOCAPS, was contacted by the granddaughter of a one time Brunswick Engineer who worked for many years for Brunswick and left an amazing amount of original Radio transcriptions along with a few photos that were taken in the 1920s and early thirties.

The picture that should be indentified has an artist recording with just a piano player and an early mike. It could be Nick Lucas, as he has the same kind of wavy, layered hair cut like Nick !!

This is a 1931-1932 Nick Lucas promotion picture on the reverse of a cardboard Hit of the week recording from my collection. This is Robby, one of the worlds youngest Hit of the week collectors, presenting the Nick Lucas promo record.

The piano player is still anonymous. As the Brunswick artist recording might be Nick Lucas, it could be one of the piano players that accompanied him during the 1920s and early 1930s. Most accompanist are unknown according the Complete Entertainment Discography of Brian Rust, but two have names. Nick Lucas recorded for Brunswick accompanied by Sam H. Sept ( 1926-1927) and Bill Wirges ( 1927-1928 ). The years between brackets are recording dates. The microphone suggests that it was in the electric period (1925 and younger). Can someone identify these two piano players as the man on the photo? Other suggestions for both artists welcome of course !

Bruce R. Young, president van de MOCAPS ( The Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society ) schreef me met het verzoek of ik de twee artiesten op de foto kon identificeren. Aangezien hij zelf dacht aan Nick Lucas ( 1892-1982 ), en Nick Lucas ook opnamen voor Durium gemaakt heeft, zocht hij contact met me. Zijn suggestie zou wel eens kunnen kloppen en ik heb hem voorgesteld om zijn verzoek ook in deze Keep swinging web log te plaatsen zodat de bezoekers misschien behulpzaam kunnen zijn met het indentificeren van deze twee Brunswick artiesten. Elke suggestie, mits onderbouwd, is welkom.
Dit is een zeldzame foto, zegt Bruce, die ons gestuurd werd door de kleindochter van een technicus, die in de twintiger- en vroege dertiger jaren in de Brunswick studio's werkte en een grote hoeveelheid radio transcripties heeft nagelaten plus enkele foto's, die gemaakt zijn in deze periode.
De foto die geidentificeerd moet worden, laat een artiest zien die schijnbaar bezig is met het opnemen van een plaat, begeleid door een pianist. Het zou Nick Lucas kunnen zijj, zoals Bruce suggereerde, aangezien hij hetzelfde golvende kapsel heeft als Nick Lucas op andere foto's.
Dit is een promotiefoto uit 1931-1932 achterop een kartonnen Hit of the Week plaat uit mijn verzameling, waarop Nick Lucas The Singing Troubadour te zien is. Dit is Robby, ongetwijfeld één van de jongste Hit of the week verzamelaars, met één van de pronkstukken uit zijn verzameling - de Nick Lucasplaat.

De pianist is nog steeds naamloos. Aangezien Nick Lucas voor Brunswick, tijdens de jaren twintig en dertig van de vorige eeuw verschillende opnamen maakte met een pianist zou dit één van hen kunnen zijn. De meeste pianisten echter zijn onbekend gebleven, maar volgens de Complete Entertainment Discography van Brian Rust hebben er twee een naam gekregen: Sam H. Sept ( 1926-1927) en Bill Wirges ( 1927-1928 ). De jaartallen achter de namen zijn de jaren waarin ze opnamen met Lucas maakten. De microfoon suggereert dat het om een electrische opname gaat, dus zijn eventuele pianisten van voor 1925 weggelaten. Kan iemand de getoonde pianist identificeren?
