Dancin' with Anson

Today a rather unknown dance band, that became famous during the Depression Days, the band of Anson Weeks. Anson Weeks, born in 1896 in Oakland California passed away February 1969; he became with his orchestra one of the most popular bands of the west coast.

His first band was founded in 1924 that played around Oakland and Sacramento and it became inmense popular due to their radio programs. In May 1928 their first recordings were made by Columbia titled Dream House and the Wob-a-ly- Walk. They played their music in hotels in California and became famous as the Anson Weeks and his Hotel Mark Hopkins Orchestra. Dancin' With Anson became their slogan !!

In the early 1930s, the period of the Depression, this band got a coast-to-coast radio program, that became immense popular, the Lucky Strike Carpet Radio Program. During that program vocalists like Bing Crosby sung with the band. His music was in the typically depression music style - a kind of sweet, but danceball music, like the Hit of the weeks, also labeled as the Hotel Bands Sound. It is remarkable to learn that this band was one of the last to use the tuba instead of the bass and the banjo instead of the guitar.

I found a film fragment of an audience, that dances to his music. Mind that the film and the music originally are from two different sources, but it gives a pleasant view on the depression era. The music was recorded by Columbia in 1932 and released on 16-inch shellac records for radio use only.

Deze keer aandacht voor een tamelijk onbekende dansband uit de begin jaren dertig, de tijd van de depressie, het orkest van Anson Weeks. Anson Weeks werd geboren in 1896 in Oakland, Californië en overleed februari 1969. Hij werd met zijn orkest één van de populairste bands van de westkust. Dancin' with Anson werd een bekende slogan !!

Zijn eerste band werd opgericht in 1924 en speelde vooral in en rond Oakland en Sacramento en ze werden beroemd, dankzij hun radioprogramma's. In mei 1928 komt er voor het eerst een plaat van hen uit op het Columbia-label: Dream House en de Wob-a-ly-Walk. Ze treden vooral op in het Mark Hopkins hotel aan de westkust en worden dan ook bekend onder de naam Anson Weeks and his Hotel Mark Hopkins Orchestra.

Begin jaren dertig, de tijd van de depressie, krijgt dit orkest grote bekendheid dankzij zgn. van coast-to-coast radio programma's ( radio programma's, die in heel de Verenigde Staten te ontvangen zijn) met hun programma the Lucky Strike Carpet Radio Program. In dat programma treden zangers op als Bing Crosby. Hun muziek is het beste te omschrijven als typische depressie muziek, een mix van de sweet music, maar toch in een soort dansbare hot-music-style, te vergelijken met de Hit of the weeks. Deze soort muziek wordt ook wel de Hotel Bands style genaamd. Opmerkelijk is te weten dat deze band tot ver in de jaren dertig de tuba en de banjo in het orkest hield, in plaats van een bas en een gitaar. Ik vond een filmfragment waarin de bezoekers zich vermaken op de dansvloer. Bedenk dat origineel de beelden en de muziek niet bij elkaar horen. De muziek werd in 1932 door Columbia opgenomen op grote 40 cm schellakplaten, speciaal voor gebruik op de radio. Het geeft een mooi tijdsbeeld uit deze periode

Brunswick pictures suggestions

In a previous blog I posted a request from Bruce R. Young of the MOCAPS ( The Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society ) who asked to identify two Brunswick artists on a picture he received from the granddaughter of a former Brunswick Engineer. The image above is a cut out of the original one made by Riel. I received several suggestions I love to share with you. Mind that I won't give you a final judgement about who-is-who; that's up to Bruce and his MOCAPS or to the reader. I'll only give some of your suggestions.

Who is the man with the wavy hair?

Bruce R. Young suggested in his first message that this man could be Nick Lucas (1892 - 1932). Some of you agreed that it could have been The Crooning Troubadour, although some cast doubts on it. Mark Berreford says: The singer could be Lucas, but looks thinner. Jerry Priessen schrijft: Wavy, golvend haar was IN in die tijd. Mijn opa in de jaren 30 had het trouwens ook zo. Artiesten deden zelfs krulspelden in om maar golvend haar te krijgen ( = Mind that wavy hair was very popular in those days; even my grandfather from te 1930s had it. Artists even used curlers to get it wavy.)

The Radio Franks

Bryan White suggested: I don't know for sure since I've never seen a photo of them, but I wonder if your mystery men might be Frank White and Frank Bessinger: "The Radio Franks." They were a vocal duo that recorded often for Brunswick in the late 1920s; usually just two voices and piano. Just a thought based on the content of the photo. Well, I found an image of these two men, The Radio Franks, and posted it above. I love the parting in Frank White's hair. Well, it might be possible. Bob Smith however suggested: The only other artist who resembles the picture (nose, ears, and wavy hair style) that I could find is Yank Lawson. He recorded for Brunswick in 1935 with Clark Randall's orchestra. In which case the pianist might be Gil Bowers (but I have no picture of him).

The mysterious piano player

There were some more suggestions according the piano player. Of course it could have been Frank Bessinger as suggested by Bryan White or Gil Bowers as Bob Smith thought. Glen Richard says: I'm not sure the vocalist is Nick Lucas, but I'm pretty sure the pianist is Anson Weeks, who did record for Brunswick in the early 30's. I wonder if "Riel" was a West Coast photographer - Weeks was well-known in San Francisco. I ( Hans) found a photo of Anson Weeks, posted below, and it has a striking resemblance in my opinion.

In een eerdere bijdrage vroeg ik hulp bij een verzoek dat ik ontving van Bruce R. Young, president van de MOCAPS ( The Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society ) die vroeg om identificatie van twee anonieme Brunswick artiesten op een foto die hij kreeg van de kleindochter van een voormalige Brunswick medewerker. De foto hierboven is een uitsnede uit de originele foto gemaakt door Riel. Ik ontving verschillende suggesties en oplossingen, die ik hier met jullie wil delen. Uiteraard ga ik geen eindoordeel vellen over de namen die genoemd worden - dat laat ik aan Bruce R. Young over en zijn medewerkers. En uiteraard hebben jullie ook een mening !! Ik leg hier alleen de suggesties neer.

Wie is de man met het golvend haar?

Bruce R. Young suggereert in zijn oproep dat de man naast de piano Nick Lucas (1892 - 1932) geweest zou kunnen zijn. Sommigen waren het hier wel mee eens, maar anderen hadden zo hun twijfels of de man naast de piano wel The Crooning Toubadour zou kunnen zijn. Mark Berreford bijvoorbeeld schrijft: The singer could be Lucas, but looks thinner (De zanger zou Lucas kunnen zijn, maar lijkt hier magerder). Bedenk, schrijft Jerry Priessen, dat gegolfd haar in die tijd erg populair was - zelfs mijn opa die in de jaren dertig leefde, had het; sommige artiesten gebruikten zelfs krulspelden om wat golfjes te krijgen

De scheiding in het haar van Frank White maakt me jaloers. Bob Smith suggereert dat, afgaand op de uiterlijke kenmerken van de zanger ( neus, oren en golvend haar) dat we wel eens te maken zouden kunnen hebben met Yank Lawson. Hij nam platen op voor Brunswick in 1935 met het orkest van Clark Randall. Als dat zo zou zijn, dan zou de pianist Gil Bowers zijn ( maar daar heb ik geen foto van).

De onbekende pianist

Er waren wat meer suggesties t.a.v. de pianist. Frank Bessinger, zoals genoemd door Bryan White of Gil Bowers zoals Bob Smith schreef. ( Ik ben niet zeker van Nick Lucas, maar ik ben zeker dat de pianist Anson Weeks moet zijn, die begin jaren dertig voor Brunswick opnamen maakte.), maar hij vraagt zich af of de fotograaf Riel wel een fotograaf van de westkust was, aangezien Weeks bekend is uit San Francisco. Ik vond een foto van Anson Weeks, hieronder afgebeeld, en ik moet zeggen ............... de gelijkenis is opvallend !!
