Today a contribution titled Jazz en las venas, which means something like: Jazz in the veins. It refers to a concert scedulded for the 19th and 20th of September 2008 at the Jazz Voyeur Club in Buenos Aires (Argentina) by Jorgelina Aleman. Jorgelina plays with her quartet, featuring Daniel Cossarini, her husband, at the piano, Manuel Sosa on the accoustic guitar, Javier Fernández electric guitar, Julián García on the bass and Lus Segura background vocal. Special guest are Pocho Lapouble on drums and the US Ollan Christopher Bell (USA). Jorgelina Aleman is the granddaughter of the great guitar player Oscar Aleman and, thanks to info attached I love to quote some lines from Jorgelina's biography. As I guess that especially South American readers of this blog might be interested in this I'll also post seperated a Spanish version. You'll also find two interesting fragments from performances by Jorgelina. The first fragment is from the Oscar Aleman documentary by Hernan Gaffet, titled La Vida con Swing and the second a fragment from a performance of Just a Closer Walk. Enjoy it !!


Jorgelina Aleman was born in Buenos Aires as the granddaughter of the famous guitarist Oscar Aleman. At the age of 4 she started to dance ballet; at the age of 15 she studied for ten years jazz-dance choreography with Moira Chapman in the "Escuela de Artes Escénicos FAMA" for 10 years.
When she completed her study for dancing, she continued Comedia Musical ( = Musical Comedy) in the prestigious institute from director Manuel Gonzalez Gil, where he found out that she had a great voice. As she was fasinated by the music of her grandfather; she had heard him playing as a small kid, she got anxious to learn about black music and she started singing lessons with Cristina Aguayo and, in a parallel studies, the Estudia Artes dramáticas ( = drama school) of Carmen Vallejo, actress and Oscar's widow.

She became a professional singer ten years ago with great success: the audience and the local press liked her singing. At first she was accompanied by a blues band which played blues, gospel music and jazz. Later it became more and more a jazz band and, thanks to her great voice, this band became a success. A lot of known Argentine musicians (some even played with her grandfather) joined in concerts like Pocho Lapouble, Manuel Fraga, Jorge Gonzalez, Miguel Botafogo, Norberto Machline, Walter Malosetti, Enrique Varela, Ricardo Pellican, Marcelo Mayor, Ricardo Lew, Ricardo Nolan, Jon Larsen ( from Norway), Pascal Loutchek, Chachi Zaragoza, etc.

In 2003 her first album was released; a live album titled "El Jazz en las venas" which was recorded at the Teatro N/D Ateneo and in 2004 she recorded with Zakiya Hooker, the daughter of the legendary blues shouter John Lee Hooker. The record was titled: Colors of the Blues, recorded live at La Trastienda. Before the end of this year her latest album will be released, her first sung in Castilian ( the Argentine version of Spanish) with several other original tunes called Moreno.

Nacida en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, nieta del famoso guitarrista Oscar Alemán. A los 4 años comenzó a estudiar danza clásica, comenzando a los 15 años de edad a estudiar danza Jazz con la coreógrafa MOIRA CHAPMAN en la ”Escuela de Artes Escénicos FAMA” durante 10 años.
Terminados sus estudios de danza, se perfeccionó en Comedia Musical en el instituto del prestigioso director MANUEL GONZALEZ GIL, donde descubre su profunda vocación por el canto. Debido a la gran atracción que tenía por la música de su abuelo, que había escuchado desde muy pequeña decide estudiar las raices de la música negra y es así que comienza sus estudios de canto con la cantante CRISTINA AGUAYO. Paralelamente estudia Artes dramáticas en la escuela de CARMEN VALLEJO.

Comienza su carrera profesional como cantante en el año 1997 con rotundo éxito y aceptación del público y de la prensa local. Debuta acompañada por una Blues Band con un repertorio de Gosspell, Negro Spirituals , Blues y Jazz. Paulatinamente se fue volcando hacia el Jazz, motivo por el cual, y debido a su gran calidad vocal se fue rodeando de los músicos más prestigiosos del género. Entre los músicos que la acompañaron podemos destacar a: Pocho Lapouble, Manuel Fraga, Jorge Gonzalez, Miguel Botafogo, Norberto Machline, Walter Malosetti, Enrique Varela, Ricardo Pellican, Marcelo Mayor, Ricardo Lew, Ricardo Nolé, Jon Larsen, Pascal de Loutchek, Chachi Zaragoza, etc.
En el año 2003 editan su primer CD grabado en vivo en el Teatro N/D Ateneo, titulado “El Jazz en las venas” y en el año 2004 grabó jujnto a Zakiya Hooker, hija del legendario John Lee Hooker el CD “Colors of the Blues” grabado en vivo en La Trastienda. Antes de fin del 2008 saldrá a la venta su primer CD en castellano con varios temas propios y otros originales que se llamará MORENA.

JAZZ en POLITIEK
Kun je je het voorstellen? Jan Peter Balkenende organiseert een concert met Michiel Borstlap en The New Cool Collective, met Jules Deelder als disc jockey om na afloop de-beentjes-van-de-vloer te krijgen; alles om de partijkas wat te spekken? Of, als echte Zeeuw, Bløf en het Westkappels visserskoor met Surrender in het voorprogramma? Hier zou dat ondenkbaar zijn ............... Op 1 oktober 2008 wordt in de Kaufmann Concerthall in New York City een concert georganiseerd, getiteld Jazz For Obama, a Concert for America's Future. Toegangsprijs slechts US$ 100 ( da's toch maar zo'n € 60, ongeveer een dagkaart voor het Northsea Jazz Festival), maar dan krijg je ook wat. Wat denk je van: Dee Dee Bridgewater - Dianne Reeves - Brad Mehldau - Joe Lovana - Roy Hargrove - Christian McBride - Stanley Jordan - Hank Jones - Charlie Hunter - Doug Wamble - Duo Bilakl-Robert Glasper - Stefon Harris en Roberta Gambarini ....... en nog meer speciale gasten !! Je zou haast politiek geëngageerd worden als je dit programma ziet. En nu maar hopen dat McCain ook van jazz houdt en hier weer overheen gaat. Wij moeten het dit weekend doen met Maartje Rikhof, die jazz zingt met het trio Rogier Telderman in De Vierschaar van het Stadhuis in Zierikzee of met de So What Jazzband in het Gasthuis in Middelburg. So What? Daar kun je je tenminste vertonen zonder meteen partij te kiezen !!

Oscar Aleman Quinteto de Swing

Being fascinated by the Argentine guitar player Oscar Alemán and his music, we, love to google the internet now and then hoping to find new information. Last week, Joergen pointed me to some great pictures by Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto de Swing from the mid 1940s.
The first one is a picture featuring Oscar Aleman and his Quinteto de Swing with Oscar Alemán in front, Ramon M. Caravaca the drummer man, Manuel Gavinovich, the violin player, Caferino Albuquerque, piano player, Luis Gavinovich the bass player and Oscar Guillermo Barbieri, who plays the rhythm guitar. With this Quinteto, if you can count you'll learn that it is a sextet, Oscar performed and recorded from late 1943 ( with different piano players ) up to late 1947. This group was a continuation of his previous Quinteto ( that ensemble had five players) he founded when he returned to Argentina from Europe early 1940s, that was broken up because of problems between Oscar Aleman and his violin player Hernan Oliva, who became a popular Argentine artist with his ensemble after he left Oscar's band. When Oscar founded his second Quinteto his drummer man Ramon M. Caravaca joined him, and because the first Quinteto was very popular, he kept the name ...... although it was in fact a sextet.

The second and third pictures are from the Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto de Jazz, in fact the same ensemble. It is a flyer wich contains, from left to right, Luis Gavinovich on bass, Ramon M. Caravaca on drums, his brother Manuel Gavinovich on violin, Oscar Aleman on solo guitar, Caferino Alburquergue at the piano and Oscar Guillermo Barbieri who played rhythm guitar.

It is rather weird that the flyer contains the titles of six los sucesos del momento, tunes that seem to be made popular at that time, but never were recorded, but one, by this band. The tune El Saltarín Escocés was recorded in Buenos Aires on the 24th of July 1945 by Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing for Odeon.

The publicer of the pictures is Sara Gonzalez, born Gavanovich. She is the daughter of the bass player in the Oscar Aleman Quinteto de Swing, Luis Gavinovich ( papá Luis) and a niece of Tio ( = uncle) Manuel. Maybe you were surprised because there are differences in the surnames, she told me: But that is the consequence of misspelling in the inmigration offices in Argentina. Father and I , we are both Gavanovich but as musicians they were known as brothers Gavinovich as you can see here. I hope to show you more pictures later of these two men thanks to Sara. On Thursday the 15th of May 2008 the Scheldejazz '08 festival in Terneuzen, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, started with a great performance in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club of the famous Monty Alexander Trio. I will, of course, inform you about this great concert later.

The Scheldejazz '08 festival, which is scedulded from the 15th up to the 18th of May 2008 contains concerts of Dick De Graaf, Estrella Acosta, Ronald Snijders, Carlo de Wijs, Arno Krijger, Jan Menu, La Melodia, Eelco Gelling, the Juke Joints, carmen gomez, Lucas van Merwijk, Benoit Martini and Blood. Omdat we helemaal weg zijn van de muziek van Oscar Alemán, zoeken we af en toe het hele internet af naar nieuwe foto's of informatie. Afgelopen week wees Joergen me op een aantal schitterende "nieuwe" foto's van Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto uit het midden van de jaren veertig. De eerste foto is een afbeelding waarop Oscar Aleman y su Quinteto de Swing te zien is met Oscar Alemán voorop in het wit, daarachter Ramon M. Caravaca de drummer, Manuel Gavinovich, de violist, Caferino Albuquerque, de pianist, Luis Gavinovich de bassist en Oscar Guillermo Barbieri, de ritme-gitaarspeler. Met dit kwintet, als je kunt tellen merk je dat dit niet klopt, trad Oscar Aleman op en maakte opnamen van eind 1943 tot eind 1947. Het Quinteto de Swing was in feite een voortzetting van een eerder kwintet ( met wel vijf spelers) dat hij had opgericht na zijn terugkomst in Argentinië vanuit Europa, begin jaren veertig. Dit kwintet had hij moeten opheffen vanwege onenigheid tussen hemzelf en zijn violist Hernan Oliva, die later zelf een succesvol ensemble oprichtte en erg populair werd. Voor het vernieuwde ensemble nam Oscar alleen de drummer Ramon M. Caravaca mee en, hoewel het een sextet was, hield hij de oude naam, Quinteto de Swing, dat al veel bekendheid had, in stand.
Het tweede en derde fotootje komen van een foldertje dat weer dezelfde groep bevat, nu met een iets andere naam: Quinteto de Jazz. Van links naar rechts: Luis Gavinovich op bas, Ramon M. Caravaca op slagwerk, zijn broer Manuel Gavinovich op viool, Oscar Aleman, solo gitaar uiteraard, Caferino Alburquergue, op piano en Oscar Guillermo Barbieri op ritmegitaar.

Het is opvallend te moeten constateren dat het foldertje een zestal sucesos del momento, zeg maar toppers van het zestal bevat, die ze, op één na, nooit hebben opgenomen. Alleen het nummer El Saltarín Escocés werd opgenomen in Buenos Aires op 24 juli 1945 door Oscar Alemán y su Quinteto de Swing voor Odeon.

De persoon die de foto's heeft gepubliceerd heet Sara Gonzalez, geboren Gavanovich. Ze is de dochter van de bassist van het Oscar Aleman Quinteto de Swing Luis Gavinovich ( papá Luis) en een nichtje van Tio ( = oom) Manuel. Het verschil in de schrijfwijze van de familienaam, Gavanovich en Gavinovic is te danken aan een fout bij het immigratieantoor in Buenos Aires, vertelde ze me. Op donderdeg 15 mei 2008 opende het Monty Alexander Trio met een spetterend optreden het Scheldejazz '08 festival in Terneuzen in Porgy en Bess. Uiteraard zal ik binnenkort verslag doen van dit schitterende concert.
Het Scheldejazz '08 festival, dat wordt gehouden van 15 t/m 18 mei 2008 in de Terneuzense binnenstad bevat optredens van o.a.
