Al Cohn

Yesterday I played myself the Al Cohn - Rein De Graaff Trio recording Rifftide, while driving home from my work. This record happened to be the perfect music for that trip and sounded great on my radio CD player. The Rein De Graaff Trio, not the first time that it is part of this web log, features Rein De Graaff on piano, Koos Serierse on bass and Eric Ineke on drums. Rein De Graaff, the Dutch bebop piano player, started his career in the early 1960s and played with numerous known and unknown musicians, accompanied by his trio. Known are his short tours with American jazz players in the so-called Stoomcursus Jazz (= Crash Courses In Jazz) or Stoomcursus Bebop ( = Crash Courses in Bebop) series. In 1987 Al Cohn should participate in one of Rein De Graaff's short tours. In his book Belevenissen in Bebop Rein told how Al Cohn entered his house in Veendam ( the north-eastern part of the Netherlands) where his wife was suffering from a slipped disc, which caused some misunderstandings as Al Cohn thought she was seriously ill and in the terminal fase of her life. They made a small tour along some venues and made this CD on the 6th of June, 1987, twenty years ago, at the Max Bolleman Studio 44 in Monster. Rein remembers how relaxed Al Cohn was. The recording took three hours to make and at the breaks Al Cohn was simple making some crosswords.

For me Al Cohn is closely related to Zoot Sims. This duo made a lot of great recordings. Their Improvisation For Unaccompanied Saxophones is one of my favorites. When Al made this Rifftide recordings Zoot Sims had passed away for two years. The eight tunes are all standards except Do Nothing Till You're True and Secret Love, two compositions of Al Cohn himself. While listening to this record in my car I learned how transparant and relaxed the music of this record is. I don't know if this Timeless Record ( CDSJP 259 ), also released on LP, is still available, but try to get yourself a copy.

Gisteren speelde ik de auto terwijl ik naar mijn werk reed de CD Al Cohn - Rein de Graaff Trio Rifftide. Deze plaat bleek uitermate geschikt om in de auto te beluisteren op mijn radio - cd speler. Ik heb in mijn dagelijkse weblog al vaker over het Rein De Graaff Trio geschreven, een trio dat tot mijn favorieten behoort. Het trio omvat Rein De Graaff op piano, Koos Serierse op bas en Eric Ineke op slagwerk. Rein De Graaff, de Nederlandse bebop pianist, begon zijn muzikale carriere ergens begin jaren zestig en speelde sindsdien met tientallen bekende en onbekende musici, bijgestaan door zijn trio. Hij is vooral bekend geworden door zijn korte tournees met Amerikaanse jazzmusici in zijn zogenaamde Stoomcursus Jazz of Stoomcursus Bebop tournees. In 1987 was het de beurt aan Al Cohn en in zijn boek Belevenissen in Bebop vertelt Rein hoe Al Cohn helemaal van slag raakte toen hij in Veendam aankwam en in de kamer Rein's vrouw uitgestrekt op het bed in de woonkamer aantrof, ten gevolge van een hernia. Al dacht eerst dat Rein's vrouw net overleden was, maar dat bleek gelukkig niet het geval. Ze maakten een korte toernee langs enkele podia en op 6 juni 1987, twintig jaar geleden, doken ze de Max Bolleman Studio 44 in Monster in. Rein vertelt hoe relaxed de drie uur durende opnamen verliepen; tussen de nummers door zat Al Cohn rustig kruiswoordpuzzels op te lossen.

Voor mij zijn Al Cohn en Zoot Sims onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Hun duo's zijn wereldberoemd en hun Improvisation For Unaccompanied Saxophones is één van mijn grootste favorieten. Toen Al Cohn in Monster deze opnamen voor Rifftide maakte was Zoot Sims net een paar jaar daarvoor overleden. De acht nummers op de CD zijn alle standards, op twee na: Do Nothing Till You're True en Secret Love, die uit de koker van Al Cohn komen. Luisterend in de auto ontdekte ik weer eens hoe ontspannen en transparant de opnamen klinken en ik raad een ieder te proberen deze opnamen op Timeless Records ( CDSJP 259) te pakken te krijgen. Een prima keus !!

The Brothers

There are a lot of Brothers In Jazz the title suggests. The Adderley Brothers ( Nat and Cannonball), The Brecker Brothers ( Michael and Randy), The Jacobs Brothers ( Ruud and Pim), The Heath Brothers ( Percy, Albert and Jimmy), The Beets Brothers ( Alexander, Marium and Peter) or the Mills Brothers (Herbert, Harry and Donald). But the real jazz fan will understand that the title The Brothers refers to The Four Borthers, a group of musicians in the Woody Herman Band. To these Brothers the nicely designed Prestige cover refers to.
The LP reads The Brothers and the names of Stan Getz -Zoot Sims - Al Cohn - Allen Eager and Brew Moore. (all in small letters) The record is Prestige LP 7022 ( reissued as OJC-008 ). The record contains two sessions of different groups. The A-side has the April 1949 session with Stan Getz and his Four Brothers ( = Stan Getz Five Brothers ) and the B-side is a September 1958 session with Zoot Sims and Al Cohn (= Zoot Sims Sextet ). Today I will concentrate on the first session: This is the discographical information:

Around 1946-1947 Woody Herman had to make a choice with his band. His band was broken. Times were diffficult - bands had earned a lot of money just after the war, but now there was less money in economy and a lot of bands had to be broke up. There was also another choice to make - swing or bebop ( the new music style ). I felt, said Herman about regrouping is band, I have to do something productive that I really like. He had heard a Los Angeles Band led by Tommy Di Carlo who had four tenor saxophones line-up in front of the band. These four men where Stan Getz, Jimmy Giuffre, Zoot Sims and Herbie Steward. The sound of these four saxes was described as very special - It sounds like syrup, Jimmy Giuffre must have said. Hermans started a rehearsal group and it sounded great. The four saxophone players, all followers of the fluffy sound of Lester Young, should become known as the Four Brothers, after a 1947 Jimmy Giuffre composition for the Woody Herman band. The members of the Four Brothers were not always the same: One of the members was Serge Chaloff, a great baritone saxophone player. Stan Getz was the man who played the main melody line and Serge Chaloff shadowed him an octave below. The two other brothers sandwiched in between. This session was made in 1949 when Stan Getz had already left the Woody Herman Band as he felt he didn't got enough room to develop as a solo instrumentalist. His first appearance as a free man was with Terry Gibbs New Jazz Pirates where he is to be heard in some great solos. The Stan Getz Five Brothers session ( the record reads Stan Getz and his Four Brothers) is the first recording under his own name but in fact there were only three original Brothers in this line-up Zoot Sims, Stan Getz and Al Cohn, who had replaced Herbie Steward. The other two tenor sax players Allen Eager and Brew Moore had never played as a Brother. Regular readers of my blog know that I love the presence on this LP of a young Brew Moore, who is one of my favorites. Although this LP seems to be two individual session, it is now clear why the second side contains Zoot Sims and Al Cohn - as being members of the original Brothers too.
It is very difficult to find film fragments for this period. I found a fragment of a concert of the Woody Herman Band with a young Stan Getz on tenor saxophone: Caledonia

Er zijn in de jazzwereld een heleboel associaties met de titel The Brothers te bedenken zoals de titel suggereert. Wat te denken van The Adderley Brothers ( Nat en Cannonball), The Brecker Brothers ( Michael en Randy), The Jacobs Brothers ( Ruud en Pim) , The Heath Brothers ( Percy, Albert en Jimmy), The Beets Brothers ( Alexander, Marius en Peter) en The Mills Brothers (Herbert, Harry en Donald). Maar de echte jazzfanaat weet uiteraard dat het hier gaat over de Four Borthers, een groep muzikanten uit de Woody Herman band. Het zijn deze Brothers waar de schitterend ontworpen Prestige hoes naar refereert. Op de LP staat The Brothers en de namen van Stan Getz -Zoot Sims - Al Cohn - Allen Eager en Brew Moore (alles in kleine letters). De plaat is een Prestige LP 7022 ( heruitgebracht als OJC-008 ). De plaat bevat twee opnamesessies, die ogenschijnlijk weinig met elkaar te maken hebben. De A-kant bevat een opnamesessie van april 1949 van Stan Getz and his Four Brothers ( = Stan Getz Five Brothers ) en de andere kant is een opname uit september 1958 van Zoot Sims en Al Cohn (= Zoot Sims Sextet ). Rond 1946-1947 stond Woody Herman met zijn band op een beslissend keerpunt in zijn leven. De band was opgeheven; na de oorlog was er weer volop belangstelling voor zulke grote orkesten, maar nu het economisch minder ging bleef het publiek weg. En er speelde natuurlijk nog een ander probleem: blijft het Swing of wordt het Be-Bop, de nieuwe muziekstroming in de jazz. Ik voel, heeft Woody Herman gezegd, dat dat wat ik nu ga doen heel productief zal zijn. Hij had in Los Angeles ( in Pete Pontrelli's Spanish Ballroom) de band van Tommy Di Carlo gehoord, die vier saxen in de voorste linie had opgsteld: Stan Getz, Jimmy Giuffre, Zoot Sims en Herbie Steward. Het geluid dat deze vier musici voortbrachten werd als heel bijzonder omschreven. 't Lijkt op stroop, schijnt Jimmy Giuffre gezegd te hebben. Er werden repetities georganiseerd en het klonk goed; de vier musici, allen navolgers van Lester Young's lyrische saxspel, werden de zgn. Four Brothers. De naam kwam van een compositie van Jimmy Giuffre uit 1947, die zo heette. De leden van de Four Brothers wisselden nog al eens - Serge Chaloff was met zijn baritonsaxofoon één van die opvallende leden. In de praktijk betekende dat, dat Stan Getz melodielijnen voor zijn rekening nam en Serge ging er met zijn baritone een octaaf onderzitten en de andere twee Brothers fietsten daar tussendoor. Deze opnamesessie werd gemaakt in 1949 toen Stan Getz al weg was bij Woody Herman. Hij had het gevoel als solist weinig ruimte te krijgen. Zijn eerste opnamen na het vertrek waren met Terry Gibbs New Jazz Pirates waar hij liet horen een geweldig solist te zijn. De opnamen met The Stan Getz Five Brothers ( de plaat noemt ze Stan Getz and his Four Brothers) is zijn eerste opname onder eigen naam. Eigenlijk waren er maar drie Brothers aanwezig: Zoot Sims, Stan Getz en Al Cohn . De andere twee tenorspelers, Allen Eager en Brew Moore hadden daar nooit bij gehoord. Iedereen die mijn blogs regelmatig volgt weet dat ik blij ben met deze vroege opnamen van Brew Moore, die één van mijn favorieten is. Misschien is het nu ook wat duidelijker wat de tweede sessie op deze plaat met The Brothers te maken heeft: Zoot Sims en Al Cohn waren immers ook Brothers.
Er zijn geen filmfragmenten van deze Brothers bekend en daarom heb ik een stukje geselecteerd van de Woody Herman band waarbij een jonge Stan Getz op tenor soleert. Veel plezier er mee.
