Aki Takase plays Fats Waller

Jazz is fun - jazz has to catch you - to surprise you. Sometimes it really hits you. Like the day I saw a concert registration titled Aki Takase plays Fats Waller on Mezzo. Mezzo is a French classical, jazz and world music TV station that is on our cable network in Zeeland, the southwest part of the Netherlands. A great station. Some people know that Fats Waller was my first passion and collectors object and when I was a young adult I tried to find all Fats Waller recordings. So when I saw this program announced I wanted to tape it.
I had never heard about Aki Takase. She is born January 1948 in Osaka, Japan. She learned to play the piano at the age of three (!) from her mother who was a piano teacher. As a student she played bass in the school orchestra and studied the piano at the Tohogakuen University in Tokyo. She heard jazz as a student and became fascinated by the progressive jazz styles, like the modern sounds of John Coltrane and Charles Mingus and the free jazz of Ornette Coleman. In 1978 she made her first album and three years later she performed with her trio in Germany at the Berlin Festival. During the 1980s she played in the free jazz style with musicians like Alexander von Schlippenbach in Germany and in the 1990s she toured with Rashied Ali and Reggie Workman. Some years ago she had her Fats Waller project and the performance on Mezzo was from that period. 
A month ago, when we visited Brussels, Belgium I found her Enja CD Aki Takase Plays Fats Waller ( ENJA CD 9152 ). The track list reads like a Fats Waller Discography: Lookin' Good But Feelin' Bad, Vipers Drag, Ain't Misbehavin' up to the funny Your Feet's To Big, but also some own compositions by Aki Takase, like Kureneko Yamato, Tintenfisch in Wien and Intermezzo 1. The members of her band are, beside Aki Takase at the piano, Eugene Chadbourne vocal banjo and guitar, Nils Wegram trombone, Rudi Mahall bassclarinet, Thomas Heberer trumpet and Paul Lovens drums. When I played this album last night, really, I roared with laughter several times because of the way Aki and her five men interpret the well known Waller compositions. What a great piano player. What a great surprise !! I'm not sure if the real pure Fats Waller collector will be pleased by this album, as he possible might find the Waller tunes violated. Well - for me this is great. I'm sure Fats Waller should have liked it

Ik had nog nooit van haar gehoord. Aki Takase werd geboren in januari 1948 in Osaka, Japan. Ze leerde als driejarig meisje pianospelen van haar moeder, die pianolerares was. Op school speelde ze bas in het schoolorkest en later studeerde ze piano op de Tohogakuen Universiteit in Tokyo. Ze werd gefascineerd door de jazz en raakte geboeid door de meer progressieve muziekstijlen als die van John Coltrane en Charles Mingus en de free jazz van Ornette Coleman. In 1978 nam ze haar eerste echte plaat op en drie jaar later speelde ze op het festival van Berlijn. Tijdens de jaren tachtig speelde ze veel met free jazz musici in Duitsland, zoals Alexander von Schlippenbach. In de jaren negentig reisde ze rond met Rashied Ali en Reggie Workmann. Dit Fats Waller project dateert van een paar jaar geleden. Het programma op Mezzo was dan ook uit die periode.
Een maand geleden bezochten we Brussel en vonden daar de Enja CD Aki Takase Plays Fats Waller ( ENJA CD 9152 ). Daar hoefde ik niet lang over na te denken. De lijst van titels op de CD leest als een Fats Waller discografie: Lookin' Good But Feelin' Bad, Vipers Drag, Ain't Misbehavin' tot aan het komische Your Feet's To Big, maar ook een aantal eigen composities van haar, zoals Kureneko Yamato, Tintenfisch in Wien en Intermezzo 1. De leden van haar band zijn, behalve Aki Takase op piano, Eugene Chadbourne zang, banjo en gitaar, Nils Wegram trombone, Rudi Mahall basklarinet, Thomas Heberer trompet en Paul Lovens slagwerk. Toen ik gisteravond voor het eerst de CD speelde heb ik af en toe luidop geschaterd van het lachen om de manier waarop Aki Takase de nummers van Fats Waller bewerkte. Muzikale grappen, vrije solo's en opzwepende stride piano wisselen elkaar af en steeds blijft de essentie van de Fats Waller composities voelbaar. Wat een fantastische pianiste. Ik ben bang dat een echte pure Fats Waller liefhebber wellicht gruwt bij deze bewerkingen; hij moet die plaat dan ook maar niet kopen. Ieder ander, met een open oor en een dosis humor, moet zich maar eens laten verrassen door deze geweldige pianist. Ik weet zeker dat Fats Waller het schitterend gevonden zou hebben. Ik vond een fragment waarop je Aki Takase op piano bezig kunt zien en horen, zij het, helaas, niet in haar rol van vrouwelijke Fats Waller.

Nederlands ( To the English translation ) Jazz is vooral plezier - jazz pakt je - verrast je en soms raakt het je midden tussen de oren. Dat overkwam me, toen ik een concertregistratie zag op de muziekzender Mezzo. Mezzo is een Franse muziekzender, die klassieke muziek, wereldmuziek en jazz uitzendt - 24 per dag. We zijn zo gelukkig in Zeeland, dat we die zender op de kabel hebben ( in grote delen van België en Nederland nog niet begreep ik eens).
