Regelmatig verschijnen er in het Nederlands taalgebied boeken over jazz, al dan niet gerelateerd aan een jazzmuzikant: Han Bennink ( Erik van den Berg) - Chet Baker ( Jeroen de Valk) of Rita Reys ( Bert Vuijsje ). Romans die over jazz gaan zijn er veel minder. Zo'n voorbeeld is Jazz in de Oostzee door Bob Rigter of Adrian Jaeggi's De Tol van de Roem. Deze boeken, romans, die zich afspelen binnen de jazzscene, kom je zelden tegen in het Nederlands, omdat er maar een kleine markt voor is. Dat geldt uiteraard ook voor Engelstalige boeken, hoewel er numeriek meer mensen geïnteresseerd zullen zijn in dit soort boeken, die zich in de sfeer van de bijvoorbeeld de jaren vijftig, met de bebop of westcoast jazz, drugs, one-night gigs afspelen. Vandaag de binnenkort te verschijnen novel, getiteld Now's The Time, geschreven door Larry Strauss.
De roman Now's The Time is een jazz novel, over een jonge zwarte vrouw, en jazztrompettiste, Didi Heron, die op zoek gaat naar het verhaal achter haar vaders dood. Haar vader, Billy Heron, een jazzpianist, overleed na een optreden in februari 1956 tijdens een auto-ongeluk. Nu, in 1976, twintig jaar later, is Didi in de voetsporen van haar vader getreden en probeert om een bestaan op te bouwen als jazzmuzikant met haar Didi Heron Quartet. In haar zoektocht naar informatie over haar vader, ontdekt ze dat er een opname moet bestaan van het laatste optreden. That tape, you know, it was the only thing made it, really. ( = Die band is het enige wat het heeft overleefd). Somehow, when the car flipped, the tape musta flew out. ( = Op de één of andere manier moet de band uit de auto gevlogen zijn toen die verongelukte). Big old reel-to-reel box of tape. (= Zo’n ouderwetse bandrecorderband). Landed on a snow drift they told me (= Die kwam boven op een sneeuwhoop terecht). Maar waar is die tape? Samen met één van de vroegere leden van haar vaders groep, Red Young, slagwerker, gaat ze op zoek naar de band: een zoektocht naar de muzikale erfenis van haar vader ........

Het boek, het verhaal is fictief, geeft een goed beeld van de scene in Amerika in de jaren vijftig, over schnabbels, platenmaatschappijen, die gewantrouwd worden door de musici, drugs en rassendiscriminatie. Larry voegt echt bestaande jazzmusici toe, die aangehaald worden, van Bird, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clarke tot Nat Cole en hun rol als aankleding spelen tussen de fictieve personages. Larry heeft zich verdiept in de Amerikaanse jazz en weet een boeiend tijdsbeeld neer te zetten. In een interview zegt hij, geïnspireerd te zijn door de levens van Clifford Brown en Hank Mobley. Clifford Brown (1930 - 1956) overleed in juni 1956 bij een auto-ongeluk.
Op 22 mei 1956 startten Max Roach en Clifford Brown een zomertournee langs allerlei clubs; hun serie optredens begon met een weekje in de Patio Club in Washington, en daarna een week Cotton Club in Cleveland, Ohio en optredens in The Rouge in River Rouge, Michigan. Hun optreden in het Continental Restaurant in Norfolk zou hun laatste worden voor het dramatische ongeluk: gelukkig werd dit concert vastgelegd op band. In een ook vastgelegd live-concert in Cleveland waren te horen Clifford Brown op trompet, Sonny Rollins op tenor, Richie Powell op piano, George Morrow op bas en Max Roach op slagwerk. Het concert werd uitgebracht door Rare Live Recordings als Clifford Brown / Max Roach Quintet - The Last Concert . Op 26 juni, een week na het Norfolk concert, kwamen Clifford Brown en Richie Powell, de jongere broer van Bud Powell, om het leven. Ik moest, lezende het boek, denken aan de overeenkomsten tussen boek en Brown: een laatste concert – een tape – auto-ongeluk.
De titel van het boek, Now's The Time, verwijst naar één van de nummers, dat tijdens het laatste concert van Billy Heron's groep gespeeld werd. What tunes did you play? (= Welke nummers speelden jullie?). Red stopped chewing; That was about twenty years ago, my sweet.( = Red stopte met kauwen: Dat was twintig jaar geleden, liefje!). I do know how we ended the first set. (= Ik weet nog wel hoe we de laatste set eindigden). How's that? "Now's The Time". ( Weet je hoe? met "Now's The Time"). You know the Bird had just died and we honored him toward the close of the first set (= Je weet toch dat Bird, Charlie Parker, net daarvoor overleden was en met dit nummer wilden we hem eren) ......... No, wait a minute. Wasn't the end of the first set. .. (= Of nee, wacht eens even, het was die keer niet aan het eind van de eerste set). That was something else .. Can't remember. (= Dat was een ander nummer - ik weet het niet). But we did honor the Bird. During the second set I do believe now. (= Maar we speelden wel iets ter ere van Bird, tijdens de tweede set). In the middle. Towards the end. (= Ergens in het midden tegen 't eind). Was a regular thing. (= Dat deden we vaker) .... This night it was Now's The Time ..... (= Deze keer was het Now's the Time)Man, and we soloed, it was upstairs to God let him know that this was the time. Yeah ...... (= En de solo's die we speelden leken rechtstreeks naar God te gaan als om hem te zeggen this was the time, dit was de tijd )
Charlie Parker nam Now's the Time op tijdens zijn eerste Savoy opnamesessie in november 1945 met zijn Reboppers. Hierin speelden Miles Davis op trompet, "Hen Gates" op piano ( = niemand minder dan Dizzy Gillespie), Charlie Parker op altsax, Curly Russell op bas en Max Roach op slagwerk. Ik vond dit nummer gespeeld door Charlie Parker's Reboppers, uitgebreid met tekeningen van Simone Pazienza

Larry Strauss is leraar op een middelbare school en woont in Los Angeles. Hij schrijft over jazz and jazz-gerelateerde onderwerpen. Hij heeft een eigen weblog: Carvin' The Vaults . Hij schrijft ook romans, zoals One Man One Vote, Unfinished Business en Fake Out. Voor zover ik weet is nooit een roman van hem vertaald in het Nederlands. Hij speelt piano en trombone en raakte geïnteresseerd in jazz uit onvrede met de populaire rock en soulmuziek. Now’s The Time is een literaire kroniek over Didi’s zoektocht naar de tape. Ze raakt bevriend met Red Young, de slagwerker uit haar vaders groep, die meespeelde tijdens de historische opnamen twintig jaar eerder; samen reizen ze het hele land door op zoek naar de verloren tape. Maar waar zijn ze echt naar op zoek? En nog moeilijker is het om te bepalen wat ze uiteindelijk vinden ....... Misschien heeft ze wel een vermoeden, maar kan ze 't niet verwoorden. Of weet het wel, maar kan het haar niets schelen wat anderen er van denken! Misschien heeft de schrijver wel een vermoeden, maar laat hij de lezer zelf de conclusies trekken. It’s like jazz (= Het is net als Jazz). It’s up to us. ( = Je mag het zelf uitzoeken). Either you get it or you don’t (= Of je snapt het of je snapt het niet). (Doug Payne)

De jazzscene van de jaren vijftig in de Verenigde Staten ontwikkelde zich van bebop naar hardbop en westcoastjazz. Tientallen, nu legendarische muzikanten, zoals Bird, Dizzy, Lee en Donald Byrd stonden aan het roer, maar er waren honderden mindere bekende musici die probeerden een graantje mee te pikken in een krimpende markt vol drugs en drank. Larry Strauss schreef een roman over Didi Heron, een fictieve zwarte trompettiste, die op zoek gaat naar een band, die opgenomen is van haar vaders laatste optreden. Today I love to point you to a novel, entitled Now's The Time, written by Larry Strauss. No, this blog didn't change its bread and butter. The novel Now's The Time is a jazz novel, about a young black woman, who is a jazz trumpet player, Didi Heron, who loves to know the story behind the death of her father. Her father, Billy Heron, a famed jazz piano player, died in a car accident, February, 1956, twenty years earlier. Now, in 1976, Didi is a young trumpet player who tries to make a living in jazz with her Didi Heron Quartet. In her search finding more information about her father, she learns that a tape was made during the last gig. A note in her father's belongings reads: Listen to tape of tonight. Red Young, her father's former drummer tells Didi: That tape, you know, it was the only thing made it, really. Somehow, when the car flipped, the tape musta flew out. Big old reel-to-reel box of tape. Landed on a snow drift they told me. But where is that tape? Together with Red Young, the drummer, she tries to turn up that tape again: A quest for her father's musical legacy.

The book, which is all fiction, gives you a good inside view of the 1950s jazz scene, about gigs, drugs and racial discrimination. Larry uses "real" jazz characters, like Bird, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clarke, Nat Cole, to name some. besides fictive characters. Larry shows his knowledge about the American jazz scene of the 1950s and reading it, the book gives you a good impression about this period. Larry was inspired by the lives of Clifford Brown and Hank Mobley.

Clifford Brown (1930 - 1956) died in a car accident in June 1956. On the 22nd of May, 1956 Max Roach and Clifford Brown started a summer tour along clubs; first week the quintet performs at the Patio Club in Washington DC, and then it plays for another week at the Cotton Club in Cleveland, Ohio; gigs in The Rouge in River Rouge, Michigan and a gig at the Continental Restaurant in Norfolk, what happened to become his last performances that was taped. One of the last live concerts at the Cotton Club in Cleveland (Ohio) featuring Clifford Brown on trumpet, Sonny Rollins on tenor saxophone, Richie Powell on piano, George Morrow on bass and Max Roach on drums was released by Rare Live Recordings as Clifford Brown / Max Roach Quintet - The Last Concert. On the 26th of June, 1956, a week after the Norfolk concert Clifford Brown and Richie Powell, the younger brother of Bud Powell, pass away at a car accident.

Charlie Parker recorded Now's The Time at his first Savoy recording session in November 1945 with his Reboppers, featuring Miles Davis on trumpet, "Hen Gates" at the piano ( = none other than Dizzy Gillespie), Charlie Parker on alto saxophone, Curly Russell on the bass and Max Roach on drums. Larry Strauss is a high school teacher living in Los Angeles and writes about jazz and jazz-related subjects. He has his own blog, Carvin' The Vaults. He wrote novels like One Man One Vote, Unfinished Business and Fake Out. He plays both the piano as the trombone and became interested in Jazz when he began to dislike the popular rock and soul music. Now’s The Time is a literary chronicle of Didi’s musical journey. She ends up befriending Red Young, the drummer on that historic yet fateful date two decades before and travelling to various points across the country in a search for the missing tape. It’s hard to say what she’s looking for. And it’s even more difficult to say what she finds. Maybe she knows and doesn’t know how to express it. Or maybe she knows and just doesn’t care what anybody else thinks about it. Maybe author Strauss knows too and thinks we should figure it out. It’s like jazz. It’s up to us. In the 1950s the jazz scene in the US developed from bebop into hard bop and west coast jazz and numerous, now legendary musicians, like Bird, Dizzy, Lee and Donald Byrd runned the show, but a lot of less famous musicians tried to make a living in a scene charactized by booze and drugs. Larry Strauss wrote a novel about Didi Heron, a fictive trumpet player, in a search for her father's last concert which was recorded on an ordinary reel-to-reel.
