De Amerikaanse gitarist Jeff Aug houdt van korte lijnen met zijn fans - binnenkort is hij weer in Europa voor een korte, bijzondere tournee. Hij zal optreden in Luxemburg, België, Nederland, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Italië, Zwitserland, Liechtenstein en Oostenrijk - alle concerten op één dag - binnen één etmaal (= 24 uur). Net als in 2009 probeert Jeff Aug zijn naam bijgeschreven te krijgen in de nieuwste editie van het Guinness Book of Records als de artiest, die de meeste concerten in even zoveel verschillende landen binnen een heel etmaal heeft gegeven....... Deze korte bijzondere serie concerten wordt aangekondigd als de Raw Fingers & Steel Strings World Record Tour ..........

Jeff Aug is een Amerikaanse gitarist, die sinds midden jaren negentig al verschillende keren als openingsact voor allerlei popgroepen Europa bezocht, zoals met de Canadese Rockband Rush, de Amerikaanse Hard Metal Band Queensryche en de Duitse Crossover band Freaky Fukin Weirdoz. En sinds dat hij professioneel bezig is op de gitaar, heeft hij al verschillende soloplaten op zijn naam gezet. Twenty years ago I started my first solo acoustic instrumental finger style performance, on the 19th of December 1991 at Food For Thought in Waghington DC ( = Twintig jaar geleden, op 19 december 1991, trad ik voor de eerste keer op als "solo finger picking gitarist" op akoestische gitaar in Food For Thought in Waghington DC) vertelde Jeff me, So that was 20 years ago ( = Twintig jaar geleden dus). Daarom heeft hij zijn nieuwste plaat Wedding Song genoemd. I think the title track Wedding Song really brings together my favourite elements of a solo acoustic finger style guitar instrumental. Drie jaar geleden verraste Jeff me met zijn vierde solo-album Living Room Sessions. Op 2 maart 2012 komt zijn vijfde solo plaat uit, getiteld Wedding Song, en meteen de dag daarop begint Jeff aan zijn promotietour langs zeven podia, zeven landen en alles binnen 24 uur. De plaat bevat een vijftiental nummers, alle instrumentale uitvoering op gitaar; een aantal nummers speelt hij op baritongitaar, zoals Diving Into The Autumn Deep. It is the first track I ever wrote on a baritone guitar. (= Het is het eerste nummer dat ik speciaal voor dit type gitaar schreef), legde hij me uit. The dark brown sound isn't just for electrics. (= Dat donkere geluid hoort niet op een elektrische gitaar.) We wade, float, swim and then dive down through the foliage's musky aura.(= We worstelen, drijven, zwemmen en duiken door het geurige gebladerte ). Clean dirt accentuate the crevices of the folds in our skin as we bathe in the fallen leaves carpeting the forest floor.(= Vuil hoopt zich op in de rimpels van onze huid als we onszelf onderdompelen in de afgevallen bladeren op de bosgrond.) De meeste nummers zijn ritmische improvisaties in een stijl, die Jeff omschrijft als ethno fusion; een stijl, die me doet denken aan de muziek van gitarist Al Di Meola ...... Een nummer als Ten Steps To The River's Edge, één van de nummers die ik er boven uit vind springen, probeert een ontspannen wandeling langs het de oever van een rivier te verbeelden .... Mijn vader, vertelde Jeff, vergeleek het leven van iemand die ouder wordt als een rol wc-papier - hoe dichter je bij het eind komt hoe sneller het gaat .......... "Life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get the end, the fast it goes" en dat is iets, dat wil ik nou net niet, legt Jeff uit, vandaar dat ik deze relaxte wandeling langs het water heb opgenomen. (I want to take is slow and moody with my pace to the river´s edge. I really want to enjoy and savor the ripples of the current cascading their way against my ears.) Een ander nummer, dat me fascineerde was 7 Ate The Cat (And Called it a Boogie) - een 7/8 riff with a bite, omschrijft Jeff het nummer. Ik vond een fragment van een optreden in Keulen in de Blue Shell van een jaar geleden, waar hij dit nummer laat horen. Geniet er van:
Het slotnummer, The Will Between Us, is gewijd aan Murat Parlak, die verantwoordelijk is voor de opnamen en het mixen. He has been a great friend and companion through these recordings (= Hij is een goede virend en steun en toeverlaat tijdens deze opnamen), legde Jeff uit, It has been a great honour working with him (= Het was een grote eer met hem te mogen werken.)

The US guitarist Jeff Aug keeps in touch with his fans. He will meet them a small, but remarkable tour, in which he will play in nine European countries: Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria - all in one day - 24 hours. He labels this Raw Fingers & Steel Strings World Record tour as: 9 shows to play - 9 countries to travel - 24 hours to make it happen! Like in 2009 Jeff Aug wants to be listen into the new updated edition of the Guinness Book of Records and labelled as the artist who performed most concerts in different countries within 24 hrs. His promotion tour in 2009 for his 4th solo album Living Room Sessions became a great success!

Jeff Aug is a US guitar player who toured Europe since the mid 1990s as the opening act for several pop bands like the Canadian Rock band Rush, the US metal band Queensryche, Albert Lee and a German Crossover band.  Since he started professionally as a guitar player he made several solo albums. Twenty years ago I started my first solo acoustic instrumental finger style performance, on the 19th of December 1991 at Food For Thought in Washington DC, Jeff told me, so that was 20 years ago. That's why the album is entitled Wedding Song. I think the title track Wedding Song really brings together my favourite elements of a solo acoustic finger style guitar instrumental.

Three years ago he surprised me with his 4th solo album Living Room Sessions. On the second of March, 2012 his 5th solo album will be released, entitled Wedding Song, which will be promoted at his European tour. The album contains 15 tracks, all solo performances, by Jeff Aug at the guitar; some tracks are played on the baritone guitar. like Diving Into The Autumn Deep. It is the first track he ever wrote for a baritone guitar. The dark brown sound isn't just for electrics. We wade, float, swim and then dive down through the foliage's musky aura. Clean dirt accentuate the crevices of the folds in our skin as we bathe in the fallen leaves carpeting the forest floor.

Most tunes are uptempo rhythmical improvisations in a style Jeff labels as ethno fusion, which reminds me to the music of guitarist like Al Di Meola ...... A tune like Ten Steps To The River's Edge, which is one of the tunes I liked best, expresses his feeling, walking along the edge of the river .... and savor the ripples of the current cascading their way against my ears. Another track that fascinated me is 7 Ate The Cat (And Called it a Boogie) - a 7/8 riff with a bite!

The final number, The Will Between Us is honoured to Murat Parlak, who was responsible for the recording and mixing of this record. He has been a great friend and companion through these recordings, Jeff told me, It has been a great honour working with him.

Within a few weeks, on the 13th of March 2009, Jeff Aug will release his fourth solo guitar album, titled Living Room Sessions. Jeff Aug is an acoustic instrumental fingerstyle guitar player with a tremendous technique. On the album you can find 15 tracks and the first one is titled Boots on Fire. I love to share with you a film fragment of that tune.

All tunes on the album are composed by Jeff Aug; from a funny, almost hill billy tune like Louisiana Voodoo Boogie and Hoedown on the Chicken Farm (including noisy cows), Spanish and Irish influenced tunes like Lightness and Highlife, up to funky notes in Chemical Funk. Some tracks are limited to half minutes (the Intermezzo's). The last track will surprise you like the hidden tracks on some Verve-albums in the 1990s. It contains some licks and false starts of Boots on Fire. (Take your times !!). The two video fragments posted in this blog are inserted on the CD too. The second fragment is titled One Twenty to be seen at the end of this contribution.

When you believe that the acoustic guitar in jazz, played in the fingerstyles, is music for pre-Charlie Christian musicians or musical styles (Charlie Christian introduced the amplified guitar in modern jazz) forgets that a lot of jazz musicians still play their music on a few strings stretched across a wooden box, as I found the acoustic guitar described somewhere. Musicians like Al Di Meola and Earl Klugh have won their spurs. Jeff Aug plays in that tradition, although he has his own style with elements of Funk, Jazz and Dance music. His guitar playing is not limited to the acoustical guitar alone; he also plays the electric amplified guitar in groups like the Floating Stone or as an accompanist for Anne Clark and the jazz fusion guitar legend Allan Holdsworth. With the latter Jeff Aug will perform solo, at the start of the concert, during Allan Holdsworth European tour next month along a dozen of European venues in The Netherlands ( De Boerderij in Zoetermeer and de Gigant in Apeldoorn), in Belgium (Spirit of 66 in Verviers) and in several German and Austrian clubs.
To promote a new album artist organise tours along venues, to show their fans the music of their latest album. So does Jeff Aug. But, as he writes in the press release, for this album he didn't chose for an old stand-by-run-of-the-mill number. No, you won't find Jeff in a weary fortnight tour along a dozen venues, but in a full European tour, labeled as the Wounded Fingers Tour 2009, in one day (!), which means 6 concerts in six countries within 24 hours. These are the countries scheduled for this attempt on a record for the famous Guinness Book of World Records in the category: Most concerts Performed in Different Countries in 24 hours: On the 13th of March (Jeff's birthday) he’ll perform at 7.00 am in Liechtenstein, at 9.00 am in Switzerland, two hours later in Austria and at 1.00 p.m. in Germany. In the afternoon Jeff Aug will perform in Verviers in Belgium (at 2.00 am) and this short, but intensive tour, will be concluded in De Nieuwe Nor in Heerlen (The Netherlands). De meeste concerten binnen één etmaal in zoveel mogelijk landen.

Over een paar weken, op 13 maart 2009, komt de vierde soloplaat van Jeff Aug, getiteld Living Room Sessions, uit. Jeff Aug is een akoestisch fingerstyled gitarist, met een adembenemende techniek. Op zijn nieuwe plaat vind je 15 nummers. Het eerste heet Boots on Fire en in het volgende filmfragment kun je horen hoe dat klinkt.

Alle nummers op de plaat zijn eigen composities van Jeff Aug, van een paar grappige, hillbilly-achtig nummers als Louisiana Voodoo Boogie en Hoedown on the Chicken Farm ( inclusief loeiende koeien), Spaans en Ierse-getinte nummers als Lightness en Highlife tot aan een funky Chemical Funk. Sommige nummers duren nog geen halve minuut ( m.n. de Intermezzo's) en het laatste nummer, Sunday Morning, zal je verrassen, zoals sommige verborgen tracks, hidden tracks, op enkele Verve CDs uit de jaren negentig, waarover ik eerder berichtte, met wat loopjes en valse starts van Boots on Fire (al moet je wel even geduld hebben). De twee videofragmenten die je op deze blog vindt, staan ook op de CD. De visualisering van One Twenty heb je nog te goed - die komt aan het eind van deze bijdrage.

Wie mocht geloven dat het spelen op de akoestische gitaar in de jazz na Charlie Christian ( de eerste gitarist, die de electrische gitaar in de jazz introduceerde) heeft afgedaan, komt bedrogen uit. Nog steeds zijn er muzikanten die on a few strings stretched across a wooden box,( = op een paar snaren gespannen over een houten doos), zoals ik de gitaar ergens plastisch zag beschreven, bespelen. Gitaristen als Al Di Meola en Earl Klugh hebben hun sporen op de akoestische gitaar ruimschoots verdiend en Jeff Aug borduurt voort in die traditie. Toch is hij geen puur akoestisch gitarist, want hij is ook bedreven op de electrisch versterkte gitaar in zijn groep Floating Stone en als begeleider van o.a. Anne Clark en de jazz fusion gitaar legende Allan Holdsworth, waarmee Jeff Aug volgende maand, als sologitarist in het voorprogramma, mee op tournee gaat. Ze zullen te horen zijn in zo'n 15 clubs, waaronder in Nederland De Boerderij in Zoetermeer en de Gigant in Apeldoorn en in België in de Spirit of 66 in Verviers. Verder spelen ze op diverse Duitse en Oostenrijkse podia.
Als je een nieuwe plaat hebt gemaakt, wordt die meestal gepromoot met een tournee langs de fans. Zo ook deze plaat, al wil Jeff daar deze keer geen old stand-by-run-of-the-mill tournee ( hoe-vertaal-je-dat? Geen Twaalf-in-een-dozijn tournee?) van maken. Nee, deze keer geen afmattende tournee van veertien dagen, langs een dozijn clubs, maar een volledige (!) Europese tour, getiteld The Wounded Fingers Tour 2009, met zes concerten in zes landen binnen één etmaal ..... 24 uur dus. Dit zijn de landen waar Jeff Aug op 13 en 14 maart 2009 te horen is met de aanvangstijd van het concert: Op 13 maart ( zijn verjaardag) begint hij om 19.00 u in Liechtenstein, om 21.00 u in Zwitserland, om 23.00 u in Oostenrijk en 's nachts om 1.00 u in Duitsland. De volgende dag zijn België ( om 14. uur) en Nederland aan de beurt. Deze korte-maar-krachtige serie concerten zal worden afgesloten in De Nieuwe Nor in Heerlen om 17 uur en de hele tour zal, als alles goed is afgerond, een gooi doen naar een vermelding in het Guinness Book of World Records in de categorie "Most concerts performed in different countries in 24 hours"(= De meeste concerten in de meeste landen binnen één etmaal).
