A few months ago I posted contributions about two remarkable Dutch jazz concerts, scheduled in a small village in the northwestern part of The Netherlands, in a small village called Blokker, situated between Enkhuizen, Medemblik and Hoorn. The series of jazz concerts in the Blokker Auction hall started in the mid 1950s when two boys, Ben Essing and Jan Vis, scheduled a concert by the Dutch Swing College Band, then one of the leading jazz bands of The Netherlands and still active now-a-days. The concerts became a hit and in May 1958 the King of Swing Benny Goodman was invited. He was received like a real King of Swing. A year later Louis Armstrong played in a jam-packed hall. Martin Van Der Waals, jazz lover and fascinated by Louis Armstrong, contacted me and told me that he had two more photos from this 1965 concert. He had got the photos from a man who had found the two photos at a basement cleaning of the Haags Gemeentemuseum ( The Hague - The Netherlands) a few years ago. Two original photos from Louis Armstrong at stage in Blokker are labeled on the reverse as F1824 and F1825. Martin sugggested that these photos could have been made by Henri Hoogewoud too. Henri told Martin that the photos were not made by him and suggested the US photographer John Loengaard who's still active. John Loengaard was a Time-magazine photographer and joined the Louis Armstrong All-Stars during its European tour. I remember that Henri told about him - about how he had flashlights every where on stage and when he wanted to make a photo he only had to connect the flash with his camera. John told that he wasn't the photographer either and he couldn't find any clue who could be the maker of it. As Martin loves to share the photos with the Louis Armstrong House Museum ( Corona NY) it would be great if some one could identify the photographer.

An anonymous picture calls up questions - anonymous is not the right word in this case, as we know when it was taken and that the man on the photo is, of course, Louis Satchmo Armstrong, one of the best known jazz musicians ever. But who took this photo on the 27th of May, 1965 at the Auction Hall in Blokker in the north western part of The Netherlands? Martin van der Waals contacted me and loves to know ..... Een paar maanden geleden plaatste ik een paar bijdragen over twee opmerkelijke Nederlandse jazzfestivals avant la lettre, die gehouden werden in een klein dorpje, Blokker, gesitueerd tussen Hoorn. Medemblik en Enkhuizen in de Kop van Noord Holland. De serie concerten in de veilinghallen van Blokker startten halverwege de jaren vijftig met een concert van de Dutch Swing College Band, de band van dat moment, georganiseerd door twee jongens, Ben Essing en Jan Vis.
Dit concert sloeg aan en het succes leidde in mei 1958 tot het uitnodigen van Benny Goodman himself, the King of Swing. Hij werd als een echte koning feestelijk binnengehaald in het tuindersdorp. In mei 1965 werd Louis Armstrong opnieuw uitgenodigd op te treden in de veilinghal van Blokker. Helaas viel de belangstelling toen wat tegen en bleken de All-Stars geen automatisch kassucces meer - het publiek had andere muzieksoorten ontdekt. Henri Hoogewoud gaf een tijdje geleden een ooggetuige verslag van het concert, aangevuld met unieke foto's van het concert. Martin van der Waals, jazz liefhebberen gefascineerd door alles wat met Louis Armstrong te maken heeft, nam contact op met me, omdat hij twee originele foto's in zijn bezit heeft, die gemaakt zijn tijdens dit laatstgenoemde concert in Blokker. Hij had deze foto's ooit gekregen van iemand, die ze gevonden had tijdens een kelderopruiming van het Haags Gemeentemuseum. Twee originele foto's, de tweede vind je in de nieuwsbrief van deze week, kort na elkaar genomen, van Louis Armstrong op het podium van de Blokkerveilinghal. Op de achterkant staan alleen twee nummers vermeld, geen stempel of naam van de maker: F1824 en F1825. Martin, die de foto's van Henri Hoogewoud had gezien, vroeg zich af of deze wellicht ook niet van zijn hand waren; navraag leerde dat Henri deze foto's niet kende. Hij suggereerde dat ze wellicht gemaakt waren door John Loengaard. John Loengaard was toentertijd staffotograaf bij het Amerikaanse Time-magazine en reisde mee tijdens de Europese tour van Louis Armstrong and his All-Stars. Henri vertelde dat hij zich John herinnerde, die, voor die tijd, geavanceerde apparatuur meegebracht had. Hij had overal op het podium verdekt flitslampen opgesteld, waar hij met zijn camera kon inpluggen, als hij een foto wilde maken. Een jaloersmakende professionaliteit. Navraag bij John Loengaard, nu in de zeventig, leerde dat ook hij deze foto's niet gemaakt had en geen idee had wie de maker zou kunnen zijn.

Martin, die de foto's graag wil afstaan aan het Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona NY (USA), is daarom op zoek naar de maker van deze twee foto's. Een anonieme foto roept vragen op - anoniem is in dit geval niet het juiste woord. De foto is van één van de bekendste jazzmuzikanten, Louis Satchmo Armstrong gemaakt tijdens een optreden in de veilinghal van Blokker op 27 mei 1965. Maar wie is de maker? Martin van der Waals is op zoek naar de fotograaf en de Keep Swinging blog wil hem op deze speurtocht helpen.
