Rock Around The Bridge

In a previous Keep swinging web log I told you about the group Endless Cycle, who had won the Battle Of The Bands contest at Den Dullaert in Hulst, a small city in the southwest part of The Netherlands. This recognition brought the group at the playlist of the Rock Around The Bridge festival in Sas Van Gent ( 16th of June 2007 ) This group of young students was founded a few years ago and released their first demo-album a few months ago. This demo, also simply labeled as Endless Cycle was reviewed before. The musicians of the group are Maarten D'Haese, guitar and clean vocals, Borius van de Weij lead vocals, José Leijnse guitar and bass guitar and Elmer Sonnevijlle drums. This young heavy metal band has my interest due to the fact that Elmer happens to be my cousin. That's why !

Last weekend they performed at the Rock Around The Bridge festival in Sas Van Gent, a festival in the open air and it was a pity that it was raining during the festival. Elmer told me that the concert was great, although the number of visitors ( ca. 100 men), due to the showers, was disappointing. They got a lot of compliments and the reviews in two regional news papers could be read as positive. The Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant ( PZC ) wrote on the 18th of June about the concert:

• De winnaar van Battle of the bands, Endless Cycle, opent halverwege de middag de zestiende uitgave van het rockfeest op het grasveld aan de Arsenaalstraat, gevolgd door de punkrockers van Seven Oaks. ( The winner of the Battle of the Bands award, endless Cycle, started the 16th edition of the rock festival at the lawn at the Arsenaalstraat, followed by the punkrockband of Seven Oaks. ).

The other regional news paper BN / De Stem wrote:

• De winnaar van Battle of the bands, Endless Cycle, opent halverwege de middag de zestiende uitgave van het rockfeest op het grasveld aan de Arsenaalstraat, gevolgd door de punkrockers van Seven Oaks. ( The winner of the Battle of the Bands award, endless Cycle, started the 16th edition of the rock festival at the lawn at the Arsenaalstraat, followed by the punkrockband of Seven Oaks.).

Not bad, in my opinion. I 'd say! You should really worry if your band wasn't mentioned at all, Elmer !! So congratulations Elmer with your first appearance at a great festival and keep all the positive commends you heard at the festival in mind !!

In een voorgaande Keep swinging weblog heb ik al eens iets verteld over de groep Endless Cycle uit Terneuzen, die een paar maanden geleden de eerste prijs won in de Battle Of The Bands in Den Dullaert in Hulst. Deze erkenning leidde er toe dat de groep mocht optreden tijdens het Rock Around The Bridge festival in Sas Van Gent. Op 16 juni 2007 was het zover. Deze groep werd een paar jaar geleden door een aantal jonge studenten opgericht en ze brachten enige tijd geleden hun eerste plaat uit. Deze demo, eenvoudigweg getiteld Endless Cycle besprak ik reeds eerder. De band bestaat uit Maarten D'Haese, guitaar and clean vocals, Borus van de Weij lead vocals, José Leijnse gitaar en basgitaar en Elmer Sonnevijlle slagwerk. Deze jonge heavy metal band heeft mijn belangstelling, vanwege het feit dat Elmer Sonnevijlle toevallig mijn neef is. Daarom dus !!

Afgelopen weekend traden ze op op het Rock Around The Bridge festival in Sas Van Gent, een festival in de open lucht. Het was jammer dat tijdens het concertt de regen met bakken uit de hemel kwam. Elmer vertelde me dat het, wat hun betrof, een geweldig concert was, hoewel het aantal bezoekers ( zo'n honderd) door de heftige regenbuien wat achter bleef. Ze kregen na afloop complimenten van de bezoekers en de twee regionale dagbladen schreven over hen op een manier, die als positief ervaren kan worden. De Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant ( PZC ) schreef op 18 juni over het concert het volgende:

De andere regionale krant, BN / De Stem gooit er nog een schepje bovenop en meldt:

• De winnaar van Battle of the bands, Endless Cycle, opent halverwege de middag de zestiende uitgave van het rockfeest op het grasveld aan de Arsenaalstraat, gevolgd door de punkrockers van Seven Oaks.

Niet slecht, volgens mij. Geen negatieve geluiden. En je wordt genoemd Elmer, dat is in ieder geval beter dan helemaal niet genoemd worden. Gelukig kreeg je genoeg lovende woorden tijdens het festival, wat het tot een gig maakte om nooit te vergeten.
Dankzij Elmer kan ik jullie een aantal fragmenten van het concert laten zien.

Endless Cycle

A few weeks ago I got myself a copy of a demo played by the Endless Cycle, a local Heavy Metal band from Terneuzen, the far southwest part of the Netherlands. This 19-minutes demo contains three tunes, titled Intro, Failure and Blueprint ( Aquaphobia).The members of the band are Maarten d' Haese guitar and clean vocals, Boris van der Weij, lead vocals, José Leijnse bass guitar and guitar and Elmer Sonnevijlle drums. That Elmer happens to be my cousin is purely coincidental. This young band was founded a few years ago in the garage box of Elmer Sonnnevijlle's parents, as a group young guys making music free of obligations, just for fun. But due to serious practicing they wanted to share their music with others and so they started as a more or less serious band.Their first performances were just informal up to this spring. They decided to make a demo record to show clubs what kind of music they could play. That demo has been released recently, with a well designed cover.

One of their first real public concerts was at Kalashnikov in Terneuzen February 2007 and at the Terneuzen Speel Thuus concert, April 2007 and they got good reviews by the audience. They decided to register for the so-called Battle Of The Bands at The Dullaert in Hulst, a regional music contest on the 20th of April 2007. They won the first price, which of course deserves congratulations. Winning this award means that you are one of the bands to play at the Rock and Dance Around The Bridge Festival in Sas van Gent, one of the biggest festivals in Zeeland, the southwest province of The Netherlands.They will open the second day of the festival, 16th of June 2007, at 15.00 hrs for a 45 minutes concert.

The music they play is not the music of my generation, so it's difficult for me to review it. Their first track, titled Intro, made me think of the music of Enya. Also in the more quiet parts of Blueprint I had that same feeling. I found it remarkable to learn how much noise the electric guitars make as if the sound was recorded too loud, although I know that this is one of the specific elements in Heavy Metal. It makes that your audio player must be of good quality. This kind of music is to dance as it is very rhythmical and it had strucked me that Elmer changes the rhythmic patterns several times during the second track Failure, something not familiar in music like jazz.
Don't ask me for a judgement of the music, as I don't feel capable for it; the fact that the jury at the Battle Of The Bands gave this young group a first price learns that they are doing a good job. Maybe next year at the Peerockfestival in Colijnsplaat or at Bunkerpop in Landgraaf. Or, who knows, within a few years as one of the major acts at Concert At Sea at the Brouwersdam, with Bløf as the support act.

Een paar weken geleden kreeg ik een demo van de band Endless Cycle, een plaatselijke Heavy Metal band uit Terneuzen, waarin, toevallig of niet, mijn neef Elmer meespeelt. Deze 19-minuten lange demo CD bevat drie nummers: Intro - Failure en Blueprint ( Aquaphobia). De leden van de band zijn Maarten d' Haese gitarist en zanger, Boris van der Weij, eveneens zang, José Leijnse op gitaar en basgitaar en Elmer Sonnevijlle, de drummer van de band. Deze jonge ambitieuze band werd een paar jaar geleden opgericht in een garagebox bij Elmer thuis door een groepje jongelui, die graag samen vrijblijvend muziek maakten - alleen maar voor de gein. Maar omdat er toch ook serieus geoefend werd wilden ze op een gegeven ogenblik hun muziek ook wel eens laten horen en dus begonnen ze serieus aan repertoire te werken. Hun eerste optredens waren tussen de schuifdeuren, tot ze dit voorjaar besloten om het meer professioneel aan te pakken en een demo te maken in een professionele geluidsstudio. Deze demo is onlangs uitgebracht en zit nu in mijn CD-speler. Aan de uitvoering van de demo CD is veel aandacht besteed.

Eén van hun eerste echte publieke optreden was in de Kalashnikov club in Terneuzen in februari 2007 en een paar maanden later op het Terneuzen Speel Thuus concert in april 2007. De reacties van het publiek waren positief. Ze besloten zich in te schrijven voor de zogenaamde Battle Of The Bands in Den Dullaert in Hulst, een regionale talentenjacht op 20 april 2007 voor beginnende bands. Daar wonnen ze de eerste prijs en dat is natuurlijk een felicitatie waard. De winnaar van deze prijs krijgt een uitnodiging om op te treden tijdens het Rock and Dance Around The Bridge Festival in Sas van Gent, zo als ze zelf zeggen, één van de grootste festivals van Zeeland. Ze mogen de tweede dag, zaterdag 16 juni 2007, openen om 15.00 hr met een optreden van 45 minuten.

De muziek die de jongens spelen is die van hun eigen generatie, Heavy Metal, dus is het voor mij moeilijk hierover inhoudelijk een oordeel te geven. Het eerste nummer, vooral gebasseerd op harmonieën, deed me sterk denken aan de muziek van Enya. Dat gold ook voor de rustigere passages in het derde nummer Blueprint ( Aquaphobia ). Ik vond het opvallend hoevel geluid de gitaren voortbrengen, alsof ze continue de grenzen van het nog net acceptabele niveau proberen op te zoeken, alsof een geluidsopname te hard opgenomen is. Ik weet dat dit kenmerkend is voor deze muziek. Ik ontdekte dat je daarom ook goede afspeelapperatuur moet hebben. Deze soort muziek is om op te dansen en is dan ook erg ritmisch. Ik vond het opvallend om te ontdekken hoe Elmer, als drummer, tijdens het tweede nummer, regelmatig, van zijn ritmische patroon afweek - iets dat je bijvoorbeeld in de jazz niet vaak hoort.
Vraag me niet om te oordelen over de muziek, aangezien ik me daarvoor niet capabel genoeg vind. Het feit dat een deskundige jury tijdens de Battle Of The Bands in Hulst gemeend heeft hen een eerste prijs te geven moet m.i. aangeven dat ze op de goede weg zijn. Misschien zien we ze dan ook wel volgend jaar bij het Peerockfestival in Colijnsplaat of bij Bunkerpop in Landgraaf. Of misschien over een paar jaar wel op het Concert At Sea festival op de Brouwersdam, met Bløf in het voorprogramma.
