The music at Shawn Maxwell latest album is inspired by the tonal palette of composers like Philip Glass. Shawn Maxwell, composer, arranger and a gifted flute and reed player wants to get noticed and that’s why he intended to break out of the traditional quartet or quintet forms …. “There are so many great saxophonists in Chicago …. And we’re all doing the same sort of projects.  It’s frustrating that we got buried in the pack.” He composed eighteen, what he called, sketches, short compositions … which don’t swing like you would expect, but uses the streamline pulse of the avant-garde as was labeled  Exotica during the 1950s. You can hear the influences of the music of Philip Glass or Frank Zappa  ….. KEEP (it) SWINGING loves to point you to John Brown’s latest album Quiet Time, released last week ….. In 2012 he impressed with his big band, which accompanied Nnenna Freelon at her album Christmas. His quintet features veteran trumpet player Ray Codrington, who debuted early 1960s in the J.F.K. Quintet and Eddie Harris groups; saxophonist Brian Miller, Gabe Evens piano and Adonis Rose on drums. John V. Brown, bass player and leader of the band selected ten brand new originals and less known jazz masterpieces, like Elvin Jones’ A Lullaby of Itsugo Village or Gerald Wilson’s first movement Romance of the 1997 Theme for Monterey. A great album you shouldn’t miss if you like to hear a band, “solidly swinging and full of deep feeling from start to finish”. KEEP (it) SWINGING loves to point you to Lauren Kinhan's latest album: Circle in a Square. A month ago New York Voices’ Lauren Kinhan released her third album .. "a Jazz Journey balancing personal tales and universal themes". While studying at the Berklee College of Music she started composing  and thought about combining her two passions …… singing and composing. At her latest album Circle in a Square, with special guests like Randy Brecker, she surprises with a dozen songs, all her  own compositions … She is accompanied by a quartet that features veteran bass player Will Lee ( who accompanied in  hundreds of recording sessions since the 1970s with great names like Sonny Stitt, the Brecker Brothers and George Benson) and David Finck, who played in the bands of Woody Herman and Paquito d’Rivera; piano player Andy Ezrin  and drummer Ben Wittman, whose credits include Don Byron and Paul Simon. Ray Ventura: Eén van de belangrijkste Europese bandleiders van de vorige eeuw.  Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog vierde hij triomfen in Zuid-Amerika en toen de oorlog afgelopen was stortte hij zich op de film .... zijn hoogtijdagen van de jaren dertig waren toen al voorbij ( Georg Lankester) 

The Brasilian band Taruíra is the name of a choro ensemble in Rio de Janeiro - a sextet that mixes traditional and modern music and "(...) brings multiple languages together and focuses on the Brazilian and Latin music – always with a little bit of jazz" it says from itselfs .... The group started in 2002 as a trio and is today formed by Breno Morais (soprano saxophone and flute), Carlos Watkins (tenor saxophone), Guto Menezes (cavaquinho and viola), José Roberto Leão (violão 7 cordas), Leandro Mattos (pandeiro) and Yuri Garrido (drums). Zo af en toe duikt Patrick van Griethuysen in zijn Haagse kelder op zoek naar platen, die eigenlijk nooit meer het daglicht zien .... laat staan te horen zijn ...... In zijn rubriek over plaatjes uit zijn urnenkelder van vergeten liedjes deze keer een terugblik op Kees Pruis, volkszanger, die in de jaren voor de oorlog op revue- en cabaretavonden razend populair was en daarbij o.a. verschillende keren Zeeland aan deed. (Patrick van Griethuysen)

Woody Guthrie .... Amerikaanse protestzanger en gitarist. De Zeeuwse folk- en rootsband Champagne Charlie zet zijn muziek, in haar derde cd uit de trilogie rond het leven van Franklin D. Roosevelt, in de spotlights ...... Een vijftiental nummers, van de Dust Bowl Blues tot This Land Is Your Land geeft een indrukwekkend beeld van de Amerikaanse maatschappij waarin hij leefde:(Hans Koert)

Lucebert, één van De Vijftigers, liet zich inspireren door de Jazz ...... In een bloemlezing heeft uitgeverij Clos zijn belangrijkste gedichten, tekeningen en gouaches aangevuld met essays en artikelen rond Lucebert uitgebracht als Lucebert Jazz "Ik ben een gemankeerde saxofonist". Op de twee bijgevoegde cd's worden Lucebert's inspiratiebronnen opnieuw uitgevoerd door Michiel Braam's Flex Bent Braam en het historisch belangwekkend concert met o.a. de registratie van het geruchtmakende concert van Misha Mengelberg-Piet Noordijk opnieuw te horen.  (Hans Koert)

I wonder why reviewers and jazz journalists need so many words, most in purple prose, to describe the sound - the almost hypnotic effects of Keith Jarretts music.  Let the music speak for itself.  ECM recently released two great albums: Keith Jarrett Concerts Bregenz - München and No End: Solo / Band.  Two great releases. The former one of Keith Jarretts best solo piano concerts and the latter a 1986 experiment by Keith Jarrett playing other instruments but the piano ....(Hans Koert)

Het debuutalbum van de Portugees-Nederlandse slagwerker Marco Santos met zijn kwartet, getuigt van een gedegen aanpak ... In een  zevental tracks schildert Marcos een beeld rond al zijn (muzikale)  ervaringen - het is een melodisch portret geworden - met een mooie hoes van kunstenaar Laut Rosenbaum, die de inhoud treffend verbeeldt .... Welkom op de nieuwe Keep (it) Swinging nieuwsbrief site, met weer interessante bijdragen en recensies. Je vindt er verslagen van een paar mooie concerten van The Original Crooks ( een band die de muziek van de string bands uit de jaren twintig en dertig doet herleven) tot de veelbelovende Zwitsere trombonist Nils Wogram .....  De afgelopen weken is het aantal mensen dat de blog via Facebook volgt flink gestegen en ook het aantal lezer van deze nieuwsbrief stijgt nog steeds. Als je nog mensen kent, die "onwetend zijn", stuur ze dan de link door http://keepitswinging.blogspot.nl  ... In the last recording session for Odeon Oscar Alemán y su Orquesta de Jazz recorded four tunes on 17. June 1957, among these was the choro 'Dedos duros' composed by Alemán himself and excellently performed as a two-part guitarsolo with accompaniment by the string section of the orchestra. 'Dedos duros' meaning hard fingered in English is a challenging piece for guitar, but is performed convincingly by Alemán - probably with tounge-in-cheek and a sore left hand afterwards. Eén  van de grootste Franse bandleiders was ongetwijfeld Ray Ventura, die in de jaren dertig met zijn Collegiens hit na hit scoorde en met zijn orkest een grote show makte rond elk optreden. In twee delen belicht Georg Lankester zijn leven. In De Fransman die Jazz met Show combineerde worden de jaren dertig in de schijnwerper gezet. ( Georg Lankester)

 Een oude 78-toerenplaat uit die eerste jaren na de Tweede Wereldoorlog: de naam van het label verwijst naar de periode van vrijheid die is aangebroken: Victory Een plaatje met een verhaal .... :  Gus Deloof, trompettist, wiens "virtuositeit en zeldzame sonioriteit, vooral op gestopte trompet, leidde tot een gekende uitdrukking in Belgische jazzmiddens "Spelen als Gus Deloof". Een tijdsbeeld uit het naoorlogse Brussel ...... Keep (it) Swinging luisterde de plaat af en ontfutselde haar geheimen. ..... (Hans Koert)

CONCERTS / CONCERTEN / FESTIVALS

Het tijdschrift voor Classic Jazz & More, Doctor Jazz Magazine, bestaat 50 jaar en dat is niet ongemerkt voorbij gegaan. Twee jubileum Doctor Jazz dagen, twee bijzondere dubbelcd uitgaven ( Dinnertime for Hungry Collectors en Jazz at the Kurhaus) en een keur aan orkesten, die optraden. Oud hoofd-redacteur en jaren het gezicht van het Doctor Jazz Magazine, Herman Openneer werd geëerd. The Original Crooks, decennia geleden al eens te gast op één van de Doctor Jazz Reunies, beet op zaterdag 19 oktoberg 2013 in Wageningen het spits af tijdens de optredens op de tweede jubileumdag. (Hans Koert)

 Nils Wogram, gelouwerd Zwitsers trombonist, kwam, zag en overwon op zondagmiddag 20 oktober 2013 in Porgy en Bess (Terneuzen) met zijn Nostalgia Trio ( met ex-Terneuzenaar Arno Krijger en de Duitse slagwerker Dejan Terzic het "verwende" Porgy en Bess publiek. Weer zo'n geweldig Porgy en Bess jazzmiddag, die je niet had mogen missen: Jazz op hoog Europees niveau.

RECENSIES / REVIEWS

Mike del Ferro verzamelt landen zoals anderen postzegels verzamelen. Hij heeft al in meer dan 100 verscbhillende landen achter de piano gezeten en al die vreemde culturen fascineren en inspireren hem. In zijn serie Songs Inspired By Wandering The Globe is nu, na een introductie-album, het eerste deel uitgebracht door Challenge, geïnspireerd door de vele muziekstijlen, die Brazilië rijk is. Impressions of Brazil heet het album. Gast is Ceumar, de uit Sao Paulo afkomstige vocaliste, die met haar fraaie stem en gitaarspel, het Braziliaanse timbre, het Mike del Fero Trio ( Mike del Ferro - Jeroen Vierdag - Bruno Castellucci) aanvult.(Hans Koert) 

Ken Peplowski is a standard in clarinet playing.  He is compared with the great Benny Goodman, with whom he played some gigs during the last years of his career. Recently Ken Peplowski released an album with his quartet, featuring a great rhythm section: Ted Rosenthal at the piano, Martin Wind on bass and Matt Wilson drums - The album is entitled Maybe September.(Hans Koert)

Jazz at the Kurhaus .....  Een serie avondvullende concerten, in de jaren vijftig georganiseerd door Paul Acket, als een Hollandse kloon van de populaire Jazz at the Philharmonic concerten van Norman Granz ...... een vingeroefening voor Acket's latere Northsea Jazz Festivals .....Het jubilerende Doctor Jazz Magazine, dat vijftig jaar geleden voor het eerst gepubliceerd werd en momenteel één van de weinige jazzbladen die kan terugkijken op vijftig jaar, brengt Jazz At The Kurhaus weer tot leven in een live registratie met muziek van de JATK-All Stars, de Dixieland Pipers, de Hot Strings, Pia Beck en de Down Town Jazz Band, aangevuld met verschillende nationale - en internationale artiesten ......  Een uniek tijdsbeeld herleeft. Een must-have voor alle liefhebbers van de na-oorlogse Nederlandse jazzscene: Cool versus Hot .. Hot versus Cool

Nowadays the popularity of salsa music as a dance seems to be rising. Born in New York in the  1970s the SF Bay Area scene seems to be overlooked and neglected for years. Next year a documentary about the US West Coast salsa scene will be released entitled The Last Mambo.
 A selection of nowadays salsa bands from the West Coast of the US has now been released on a 2cd album entitled Salsa de la Bahia, subtitled A Collection of SF Bay Salsa and Latin Jazz, featuring great names like Benny Celarde y su Super Combo, Anthony Blea y sy Charanga, John santos and the Machete Ensemble, Hesse "Chuy" Varela,  Jesus Diaz y su QBA, Edgardo y sy Candela, Orestes Vilató, The Roberto Borrell-Tregor Otten's  La Moderna Tradicón, Louie Romero y su Grupo Mazacote, Benny Velarde and some new recordings by a great all star band Estrellas de la Bahia. Love to introduce you to this great album: Salsa de la Bahia; a warm-up for the documentary to come: The Last Mambo. (Hans Koert)

  

In American music tradition the mandolin generally is considered a 'folk' instrument designated for musicians excelling in country music and especially a branch of this commercially successfull genre usually labeled as 'bluegrass'. Dan Stiernberg, however, prooverd that the instrument is also suitable for he swing idiom and released with his trio a few years ago a great album with jazz standards, thatshould be recommended, entitled Swing 220.
