Afgelopen jaar nam gitarist en cavaquinho-speler Nelson Latif de plaat Tributo a João Pernambuco (NL002) op - deze CD is nu uit. Hij is tussen april en december 2009 in zowel Brasilia ( Brazilië ) als in Amsterdam opgenomen en bevat zo'n twaalf nummers met solo uitvoeringen en arrangementen voor choro-ensemble - tien nummers zijn composities van João Pernambuco, en de twee resterende zijn eigen composities van Latif en gitarist Bosco Oliveira
Deze plaat is een eerbetoon aan de in 1947 overleden Braziliaanse componist and gitarist João Teixeira de Guimarães, beter bekend als João Pernambuco.

De muzikale nalatenschap van João Pernambuco (1883-1947) is jarenlang totaal vergeten geweest, nadat hij eind jaren veertig overleed. Slechts een klein aantal nummers werd door anderen in de jaren vijftig en zestig op de plaat vastgelegd, door musici als Dilermando Reis en Jacob do Bandolim. Dankzij de uitgave van een aantal van Pernambuco’s composities op twee langspeelplaten door Turibío Santos in 1977 en 1979, herleefde de belangstelling voor João's muziek en gleed deze niet verder weg in de vergetelheid. Vanaf dat moment hoorden João's composities weer tot het standaard-repertoire van elke serieuze choro-speler en werden zijn composities weer vastgelegd door musici in Brazilië en daarbuiten. Toen in 1983 het feit herdacht werd dat João Pernambuco honderd jaar geleden geboren werd, verscheen een plaat van pianist Antonio Adolfo en zijn choro ensemble Nó Em Pingo d'Aqua - eveneens opnamen waar je niet omheen kunt.

Bosco Oliveira, die op deze CD Nelson Latif begeleidt in de ensemble nummers, is een vast lid van Latif's groepen waarmee hij Braziliaanse- en wereldmuziek speelt. In de stukken met zijn choro-ensemble vinden we ook Flávio Sandoval op tenor- en sopraansax en Rafael dos Santos op pandeiro ( een Braziliaanse handtrom). De plaat start met een geweldig arrangement van Pernambuco's compositie Dengoso met Latif op violão 7 cordas ( = een zevensnarige gitaar) overdubbed met cavaquinho en solo's van Sandoval's op rieten, begeleid door Oliveira en Rafael dos Santos. Daarna volgt een opname van Sons de Carrilhões van Latif, weer op de violão 7 cordas en Oliveira op gitaar, waarmee Latif subtiel verwijst naar de beroemde duo-opnamen van Raphael Rabello en Dino Sete Cordas begin jaren negentig.

Graúna, Interroganda, Brasileirinho en de compositie van Oliveira: De João para João zijn trio-opnamen met Latif op de violão 7 cordas en de cavaquinho; Sandoval is te horen op sax in Mimoso. Sentido, Lágrima, Saudosa Viola, Rebolico en de Latif compositie Uma Toada para o João, een solonummer van Nelson Latif zelf op de 7-snarige gitaar. Deze nummers van Pernambuco refereren aan de historische opnamen van João en Zezinho eind jaren twintig.

Deze CD is een mooi voorbeeld van hoe de muzikale erfenis van João Pernambuco in ere wordt gehouden en is daardoor een aanwinst voor elke serieuze muziekverzameling. Het laat horen hoe zijn muziek nog steeds jonge muzikanten weet te inspireren om de ziel en de hartslag van de Braziliaanse muziek in leven te houden. Hij bespeelt de gitaar vaak met alleen zijn linkerhand, met andere woorden, hij maakt dan het geluid alleen op de hals van de gitaar. Hij doet dit met het grootste gemak. Hij speelt elk stuk, starend in de lucht of naar een vast punt op de muur - hij kijkt nooit naar zijn vingers op de gitaar. Zoals hij de gitaar bespeelt, heb ik mijn leven lang nog niet gezien! Last year guitarist and cavaquinho player Nelson Latif recorded an album dedicated to João Pernambuco (1883-1947), entitled Nelson Latif Tributo a João Pernambuco (NL002), that has been just released. The cd is recorded in Brasilia and Amsterdam in April and December 2009 and contains a dozen tracks of both solo pieces and arrangements for choro ensemble - 10 tracks feature compositions by João Pernambuco; the 2 remaining are compositions by Latif and guitarist Bosco Oliveira.
This album is dedicated to the musical heritage of the Brazilian composer and guitar player João Teixeira de Guimarães, better known as João Pernambuco, who passed away in 1947.

The musical legacy of João Pernambuco was almost forgotten after his death; only a small selection of his compositions were recorded by other musicians, like Dilermando Reis and Jacob do Bandolim in the 1950s and 1960s. However, with the essential release of some of Pernambuco's choros on two LPs by Turibío Santos in 1977 and 1979, the music of João Pernambuco was relived and saved from oblivion. From then on Pernambuco's compositions have been considered a part of the choro standard book for each serious Choro-player. In 1983, the centennial of Pernambuco was celebrated through a recording by pianist Antonio Adolfo and the choro ensemble Nó Em Pingo d'Aqua featuring new arrangements of some of Pernambuco's pieces, another essential recording that I have commented earlier. Guitarist Bosco Oliveira, who accomponanies Latif in the ensemble tracks on the cd, is a regular member of Latif's various ensembles excelling in different variations of Brasilian and world-music styles. The ensemble tracks have further participation by Flávio Sandoval on tenor and soprano sax and Rafael dos Santos on pandeiro ( a small Brazilian hand drum).

The cd takes off with a great arrangement of Pernambuco's Dengoso featuring Latif on violão 7 cordas ( a seven-string guitar) and cavaquinho overdub and solo contributions from Sandoval's reeds backed by Oliveira and Rafael dos Santos. This is followed by a duo recording of Sons de Carrilhões by Latif on violão 7 cordas and Oliveira on violão ( = guitar) including an improvisation by Latif reflecting the famous duet recording of the piece by Raphael Rabello and Dino Sete Cordas from the early 1990s. Graúna, Interroganda, Brasileirinho and the Oliveira composition De João para João are trio recordings featuring Latif on both violão 7 cordas and cavaquinho, the reed playing by Sandoval is featured again on Mimoso, Sentido, Lágrima, Saudosa Viola, Rebolico and the Latif composition Uma Toada para o João are solo contributions by Nelson Latif on violão 7 cordas, the Pernambuco pieces reflecting the historical recordings from the late 1920s by João and Zezinho.

The cd is highly recommended as an example of the fact that João Pernambuco's musical legacy is taken good care of today and still challenges musicians to offer their best and as such relive the soul and heartbeat of true Brasilian music.

He often played the guitar only with his left hand, which is to say, he made the sounds only on the neck of the guitar. He did this with the greatest naturalness. He played whatever piece looking towards the sky, towards a wall, not paying attention to the neck of the guitar. Hev had a fingering and quality that until today I have not seen ( Leal and Barbosa refering to João Fernambuco)
