Deja vu: Toen ik een jaar of zes was kwam er een man op Hoedekenskerke, een dorpje aan de Westerschelde, met een fototoestel en maakte foto's van de kinderen. Wie het wilde mocht op de foto, verkleed als een "boertje” met pet, kiel en juk. Voor een kind een hele gebeurtenis. Ik weet niet meer of mijn moeder het leuk vond, maar ik mocht de foto kopen .......

Toen ze vier was, .... a man showed up in her neighbourhood, going door to door with a pony and camera: Pay to get your picture taken. ( = kwam er een man met een pony en een camera bij haar in de buurt, die van deur tot deur ging: als je betaalde mocht je op de foto). Her brothers, both older, refused. (= Haar twee broers, allebei ouder, wilden niet). One thought it beneath him, the other frightened. (= De één voelde zich er te oud voor en de ander was stiekem bang) Cassandra, that was her name, wanted to step up, get that shot. ( = Cassandra, want zo heette ze, wilde wel op de rug van het dier en op de foto). Her mother could have said you're too young - she did, in fact. (= Haar moeder zal ongetwijfeld gevonden hebben dat ik er nog te klein voor was - en dat zei ze ook ). She could have have reminded her there were certain things ladies just don't do.( = Ze zal haar er wel aan herinnert hebben dat kleine dametjes zoiets niet doen) .... But she let her do it because I guess she saw something in her - that she was fearless - and she wanted to encourage that.( = ....Ze zal het wel hebben laten gebeuren, omdat ze wel zag dat ze niet bang was en daarom wilde ze het niet ontmoedigen). Een paar weken geleden werden de nieuwste plaat van zangeres Cassandra Wilson uitgebracht door Blue Note, getiteld Silver Pony. Het album bevat ruim tien nummers, zowel live- als opgenomen in een studio.

Cassandra werd geboren in Jackson, Mississippi, vlak bij New Orleans, in december 1955. Als tiener zong ze met plaatselijke musici zoals Ellis Marsalis. Ze verhuisde naar New Jersey en later New York waar ze lid werd van de band van Steve Coleman en Greg Osby ( M-Base ). Op haar eerste eigen plaat, Points of View, een mix van Jazz en hip-hop elementen, speelden musici mee als Grachan Monchur III en Steve Coleman. In haar volgende albums ontwikkelde haar stijl van de funky sounds van M-Base naar meer mainstream-achtige platen. Cassandra's stem viel op bij de producenten van Blue Note, die haar uitnodigden om platen te maken, zoals Blue Light 'Til Dawn.

Dankzij deze albums werd ze bekend bij het grote publiek. Ze verraste niet alleen met haar stem maar ook met de keuze van de titels, zoals nummers van Joni Mitchell en Robert Johnson. Haar selecties waren vaak spraakmakend: ze verraste met nummers die bijna vergeten of over het hoofd gezien waren door anderen. Maar, stelt ze in een interview getiteld Het bluesgevoel van Cassandra Wilson ( door Marnix Koers) in Jazz (zomer 2006) dat ze de nummers niet echt zoekt: Die liedjes kiezen mij. Ze dringen zich op aan mijn ziel en dan zit er voor mij niets anders op dan ze uit te voeren.

Ze vertelt hoe ze geïnspireerd werd voor dit album tijdens een tournee in Europa met een band, waarin gitarist Marvin Sewell, die al meer dan tien jaar met haar optreedt, bassist Reginald Veal, pianist Jonathan Batiste, oorspronkelijk uit New Orleans, Herlin Riley, slagwerker en percussionist Lekan Babalola. Tijdens dat concert in Granada (november 2009) werd het idee voor dit album geboren en een aantal nummers van dit liveoptreden werden gebruikt. De studio-opnamen dateren van een maand later in New Orleans en werden opgenomen in de Piety Street Recording studios. I thought (= Ik bedacht), vertelt ze aan Larry Blumenfeld in het bijbehorende boekje van haar plaat, I thought, I’m going to play some of this stuff for the guys, let them listen to it, and begin to grow ideas out of what we'd done. ( = Ik bedacht, ik speelt wat van het materiaal voor de jongens en laat ze luisteren en dan groeien de ideeën vanzelf uit die opnamen die we eerder maakten). And it really did happen. (= en zo ging het echt ........ .) .

De nummers van het album bevatten verschillende eigen composities, zoals A Night in Seville, verwijzend naar haar concerten in Spanje, Beneath a Silver Moon en het titelnummer Silver Pony. De laatstgenoemde wordt fantastisch ingeleid door percussionist Lekan Babalola en bassist Reginald Veal en als Cassandra gaat zingen, wordt ze door Marvin Swell op onnavolgbare wijze begeleid op zijn elektrische gitaar.

Het bekende nummer Lover Come Back To Me is ongetwijfeld mijn favoriete nummer van de plaat - het is een live-opname uit Granada van november 2009 en het begint met een stevig, dwingend, doch subtiel ritmisch patroon, gespeeld met de brushes door Herlin Riley en een piano-intro, voordat Cassandra het thema inzet. Wow - wat een nummer. Een tweede nummer dat me verraste was Saddle Up My Pony, een Charley Patton compositie, the Voice Of The Delta (Blues), met Marvin Sewell op slidegitaar in de rol van Patton. Heerlijke rauwe Deltablues. En wat maakt Cassandra van zo’n dood-gespeeld nummer als de St. James Infirmary? Ze maakt er, samen met Marvin Sewell, alweer op die heerlijke "valse" slidegitaar, een compleet nieuw nummer van onder de titel Went Down to St. James Infirmary.

Cassandra Wilson houdt ervan haar platen op te nemen in New Orleans en de Mississippi Delta. Ze woonde vorig jaar bijna een half jaar in dit gebied, in The French Quartet van New Orleans, voorafgaand aan haar Europese tournee, omdat haar moeder op sterven lag. Haar moeder overleed uiteindelijk in mei 2009. Tijdens dat half jaar genoot ze van die typische atmosfeer van New Orleans, zo treffend beschreven door Rob van Scheers in zijn onlangs verschenen boek De Jazz Parade - een verborgen geschiedenis van New Orleans: The place where the salt water and fresh water get mixed. Toen Cassandra als jongvolwassene naar New York verhuisde was ze vast van plan om het daar te gaan maken als zangeres. Ze wilde leren zingen als Betty Carter - I wanted to be Betty. (= Ik wilde als Betty zijn). Ze vroeg Betty of ze les kon krijgen en hoe ze een echte jazzzangeres kon worden. Betty antwoordde: You just do it. ( = Gewoon doen .... ) Het verhaal van het kiekje van de kleine vierjarige Cassandra op de rug van de pony, verkleed als een echte cowboy, symboliseert haar sterke ambities ........ wearing a cowboy hat, bandana around the neck, reins in hand, sitting proudly in the saddle, barely sensing then but knowing full well now what that move meant. ( = met een cowboyhoed op, sjaal rond de nek, teugels in de hand, trots rechtop in het zadel, toen nauwelijks de diepere betekenis beseffend ), maar nu een mooie kapstok om haar ambities te illustreren.

Het verhaal achter het kiekje uit het album van Cassandra Wilson van een vierjarig meisje op de rug van een pony zegt veel over haar ambitites. Gekleed als een cowboy, met een halsdoek, teugels in de hand, zelfverzekerd rechtop in het zadel kan ze dan nog niet bevroeden, waartoe dit allemaal zal leiden. Deja vu: When I was 6 or 7 years old a man with a photo camera visited our village of Hoedekenskerke in the south west part of The Netherlands and made pictures of the kids who loved to be dressed like a farmer, including an old fashioned yoke. I can't tell you if my parents where happy with it - fact was, that they had to buy the photo.

When she was four, .... a man showed up in her neighbourhood, going door to door with a pony and camera: Pay to get your picture taken. Her brothers, both older, refused. One thought it beneath him, the other frightened. Cassandra, that was her name, wanted to step up, get that shot. Her mother could have said you're too young - she did, in fact. She could have have reminded her there were certain things ladies just don't do. .... But she let her do it because I guess she saw something in me - that I was fearless - and she wanted to encourage that.

A few weeks ago Cassandra Wilson released her latest album, Silver Pony at the Blue Note label. The album contains almost a dozen tracks, both live in concert as studio recordings.

Cassandra Wilson was born in Jackson, Mississippi, December 1955, near New Orleans, where she played with local musicians like Ellis Marsalis. She moved to New Jersey and later New York where she became a member of the bands of Steve Coleman and Greg Osby ( M-Base ). Her first own album, entitled Points of View, a mix of Jazz and hip-hop elements, was with musicians like Grachan Monchur III and Steve Coleman. In her next albums she developed from the funky sounds of the 1980s M-Base to more mainstream albums. Cassandra's voice was noticed by Blue Note who started to make records with her, like Blue Light 'Til Dawn. Thanks to this album she became known to the general public.

She surprises with the tunes she selected, like a Joni Mitchell song or Robert Johnson originals. Her selections are often notable: the surprising thing about it is, that she always selects tunes that seem to be forgotten or neglected by others. But, she said in an interview entitled Het blues-gevoel van Cassandra Wilson ( by Marnix Koers) in the Dutch Jazz magazine (summer 2006) Die liedjes kiezen mij. (= The songs select me). Ze dringen zich op aan mijn ziel en dan zit er voor mij niets anders op dan ze uit te voeren. ( = They force themselfs to my soul and then I have no choice - I have to use it).

She tells how she got inspired at a concert in Granada (Spain) in November 2009. She was touring along Europe with a band, featuring guitarist Marvin Sewell, who is a member of her group for more then a decade; double bass player Reginald Veal, Jonathan Batiste, a piano player, originally from New Orleans and Herlin Riley, drummer and percussionist Lekan Babalola. During that concert the idea for her new album was born and several live tracks, as it seems, were used for this album. The studio recordings were scheduled a month later in New Orleans at the Piety Street Recording Studios. I thought, she said to Larry Blumenfeld in the liner notes of her album, I thought, I’m going to play some of this stuff for the guys, let them listen to it, and begin to grow ideas out of what we'd done. And it really did happen.

The track list of the album contains several of her own recordings like A Night in Seville, refering to her concerts in Spain, Beneath a Silver Moon and the title track Silver Pony. The latter has a great intro by percussionist Lekan Babalola and bass player Reginald Veal and when Cassandra sings, Marvin Swell accompanies her in a great way at his electric guitar.

The well known tune Lover Come Back To Me is own of my favourites - it's the Granada live recording version from November 2009 and it opens with a fat rhythmical pattern with the brushes of Herlin Riley and a piano entry, before Cassandra starts to sing the tune. Wow - what a swinging performance. Another tune that surprises is Saddle Up My Pony, a Charley Patton composition, the Voice Of The Delta (Blues), with a great for Marvin Sewell on the slide guitar. A great Delta Blues performance. And what to think about that traditional St. James Infirmary. Cassandra creates, together with Marvin Sewell on the slide guitar, a complete new version of this often rather boring standard.

Cassandra Wilson loves to record in New Orleans and in the Mississippi Delta. She lived for more then a half year, previous to the 2009 European tour, in New Orleans, in the French Quarter, where her mother lived. She wanted to be close to her mother, in her final days; her mother passed away in May 2009. In the mean time she enjoyed the city anf the Delta and its musical spirits - the region where she was raised - the places of her roots: The place where the salt water and fresh water get mixed.

When Cassandra moved as a young adult to New York she wanted to make it - she wanted to be like Betty Carter. I wanted to be Betty. She asked Betty to teach her to sing like her. How then does a young woman become a jazz vocalist? She asked Betty: You just do it. Betty answered.
