WOLFGANG MAIWALD TRIO - TWO FACES

Later this year the German piano player and composer Wolfgang Maiwald will release his first album at his own account. The album, entitled Two Faces, contains ten tracks played by his trio, featuring Wolfgang Maiwald at the piano, Guus Bakker on bass and Joost Kesselaar on drums. I love to introduce it to you.

Wolfgang Maiwald, who learned himself to play the piano as a teenager, studied music at the University of Oldenburg in the late 1980s and was honoured at the Jugend Jazzt Niedersachsen as the best upcoming young talent of the region. He decided to become a professional piano player after his studies at the Amsterdam School of Arts and the Hilversum Conservatory of Music (summa cum laude). ( MMP CD 1001)
Since the 1990s he performed with dozens of Dutch and international famous musicians like Ferdinand Povel, Joe Lovano, Jesse Van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Tineke Postma, Jasper Blom and Rick Margitza ( to list some). Rick Margitza played several times with Wolfgang Maiwald and his Trio, which was the regular house band of the weekly jam sessions at the Old Quarter hotel in Amsterdam for years and remembers these concerts: I heard colours and levels of expression that I had not heard before. He has a real voice as a composer and has managed to create an environment for his playing that serves his voice as an improviser. Rick Margitza impressed a half year ago at the Porgy en Bess Jazz club in Terneuzen (The Netherlands). I found a fragment of a concert in which Rick Margitza plays with the Wolfgang Maiwald trio at one of the Old Quarter jam sessions in Amsterdam.

It seems as if Wolfgang Maiwald and his Trio don't play often in public. Wolfgang Maiwald is part of several other formations. He accompanied the Dutch singer Eric Beekes who had a program especially for children and is active in formations like Beatsclassics, a collective of experienced live musicians, deejays and veejays. They merge vocals, visuals, live mixed beats, percussion, saxophones, keys and only the best dance tracks during their act into a dynamic, audio visual spectacle with a high jam factor. Classics from a.o. Moloko, Technotronic, Spiller, Basement Jaxx are transformed into pumping, grooving, live performed floor fillers as its website reads. This kind of music will especially attract young people who love music to relax and dance in clubs or disco's. The music on the album Two Faces will appeal to a wider public, I guess. The album contains ten tracks; seven own compositions and tunes like Herbie Hancock's Chan's Song, known from the film Round Midnight and standards like Summer Night and I Fall In Love Too Easily. The music could best be described as easy listening or jazzy lounge music - music to relax. The three musicians form a solid based group; lyrical but rhythmical improvisations on the piano; a well sounding bass and sensitive brushes - great elements for a jazz record. The most jazzy tune is Conduction, a Wolfgang Maiwald composition. Enjoy it:

Two Faces is an album that will be appreciated by a large group of jazz fans, who love to hear well sounding easy accessible piano trio music, as played by skilled musicians who know how to play it.

Binnenkort verschijnt de nieuwste plaat van de Duitse pianist en componist Wolfgang Maiwald - het is de eerste plaat die hij met zijn trio uitbrengt in eigen beheer. Het album heet Two Faces en bevat tien nummers gespeeld door zijn trio, dat bestaat uit Wolfgang Maiwald op piano, Guus Bakker op bas en Joost Kesselaar op slagwerk. Ik mocht alvast hem beluisteren.

Wolfgang Maiwald - hij leerde zichzelf piano spelen als tiener - studeerde eind jaren tachtig muziek aan de universiteit van Oldenburg en viel dusdanig op dat hij eind jaren tachtig door de Jugend Jazzt Niedersachsen uitgeroepen werd tot het meest belovende talent van de regio. Hij besloot professioneel door te gaan nadat hij, verhuisd naar Amsterdam, zijn studie aan de Amsterdamse School voor de Kunsten en het Hilversums conservatorium summa cum laude had afgerond.

Hij trad op met tientallen nationale - en internationaal bekende jazzmusici als Ferdinand Povel, Joe Lovano, Jesse Van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Tineke Postma, Jasper Blom en Rick Margita ( om er een aantal te noemen). Rick Margitza, die verschillende keren met Wolfgang optrad tijdens de wekelijkse jam sessions in het Old Quarter hotel, waar het trio jarenlang de vaste huisband was, herinnert zich: I heard colours and levels of expression that I had not heard before. (= Ik hoorde allerlei klankkleuren en niveaus die ik nog niet eerder gehoord had.) He has a real voice as a composer and has managed to create an environment for his playing that serves his voice as an improviser. ( = Hij heeft een eigen geluid als componist en weet een omgeving te organiseren en te creëren waarin ruimte is voor improvisatie). Ik vond een fragment van een concert, waarin Rick Margitza speelt met het Wolfgang Maiwald Trio tijdens één van de optredens in het Old Quarter hotel in Amsterdam. Rick Margitza imponeerde een half jaar geleden tijdens een optreden in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen.

Het Wolfgang Maiwald trio lijkt als trio niet vaak op te treden, maar Wolfgang Maiwald is vaak te horen als lid van de groep Beatsclassics, dat zichzelf op hun website omschrijft als een collectief van zeer ervaren live muzikanten, dj's en vj's. Tijdens hun act worden vocals, visuals, live gemixte beats, percussie, saxen, toetsen en alleen de allerbeste dancetracks samengevoegd tot een dynamisch, auditief en visueel spektakel met een hoge jam-factor. Klassiekers van o.a. Moloko, Technotronic, Spiller, Basement Jaxx worden omgetoverd tot pompende, groovende, live gespeelde floorfillers. Dit soort muziek is erg populair bij de jonge clubbezoekers, die deze muziek waarderen om te relaxen en te dansen. De muziek op de plaat Two Faces is van een geheel andere stijl, die wellicht het beste als easy listening of loungemuziek omschreven kan worden, in de goede zin van het woord. Het trio mikt duidelijk op een ander publiek.

De drie musici op de plaat ontpoppen zich als ervaren musici en zetten een hecht stabiel jazzpiano trio neer, met een ietwat lyrische maar toch ritmische improvisatiestijl van de pianist, een prima klinkende bas en de subtiele brushes van de slagwerker........ prima muziek om bij te ontspannen. Het meest jazzy nummer is ongetwijfeld Conduction, een Wolfgang Maiwald compositie. Luister maar .........

Two Faces is een plaat die een grote groep van muziekliefhebbers zal aanspreken - prima klinkende, gemakkelijk toegankelijke muziek, dat lijkt te rijpen na herhaald beluisteren - een plaat gespeeld door een ervaren combo, dat weet wat de gemiddelde luisteraar en zijn gasten wil horen.

Wolfgang Maiwald en zijn Trio brengen binnenkort, in eigen beheer, hun eerste plaat uit getiteld Two Faces. Wolfgang Maiwald speelt een tiental nummers, merendeels eigen composities, met zijn ervaren begeleiders, die heel wat muziekliefhebbers zal aanspreken. Keep Swinging zet dit soort nieuwe producties graag in de schijnwerper - zo ook deze plaat Two Faces.
