The first weekend of February: carnival in Brazil. Four days a year Brazil is the center of the world - the other 360 days are reserved for workaday reality. Today a contribution about Tito Martino: 50 anos tocando Jazz.

In December 2007 the Brazilian clarinet and saxophone player Tito Martino celebrated his 50 years in jazz with a great concert at the Auditorio Simón Bolivar in Sao Paolo (Brazil). Tito Martino started his career in 1957 when he started to play the ukulele banjo and clarinet with Peter Dakowsky, who had introduced him to the music of Ken Colyer, Humphrey Lyttelton and Louis Armstrong. Now, 50 years later, after a stay of ten years in Switserland, he is the leader of his Tito Martino Jazz Band in Brazil. The concert, held at the Auditorium Simon Bolivar in Sao Paulo the 18th of December 2007 was a great success. The concert was actually a big success, Tito told me, more than 600 people filled the Auditorium and gave a standing applause at the end. Although Tito Martino belongs to the best Brazil has in traditional jazz, the major newspapers ignored these celebration, and that is a shame of course. The fact that all these people wanted to celebrate this golden jubilee means that he and his music is still popular among a lot of Brazilians. I deduce that all this people came because they are really interested in following our work, Tito concluded.
To celebrate this event Tito released an album, titled Tito Martino & Friends 1957 a 2007: 50 anos tocanda Jazz. ( = 50 years in Jazz). This album contains 18 tracks with traditional jazz as played by two of his bands: The Original Traditional Jazz Band and The South Side Stompers. The tunes from the Original Traditional Jazz Band are from September 1977 and contains themes as Doctor Jazz, the Darktown Strutter's Ball, Mississippi Mud and of course The Tiger Rag and The Saints; all typically 1920s tunes.

The South Side Stompers tracks, recorded in October 2004, like Perdido, Sweet Lorraine, Please Don't Talk About Me and the seldon heard Don't Deny My Name by F. Lamothe are more in the traditional swing tradition. It also contains some tracks by Tito Martino as a composer, like What Am I Doing Here, Lolo's Strut and his 40 years old Washboard Stomps. For those readers living in Western Europe it might be interesting to learn that the trombone player and vocalist is the Belgian-born musician Jean-Pierre Henkart.

Het eerste weekend van februari staat dit jaar in het teken van carnaval: vier dagen lang staan België en delen van Nederland op zijn kop. Ook vier dagen feest in Brazilië; op de andere 360 dagen pakken we het leven van alle dag weer gewoon op. Vandaag een bijdrage over een Braziliaanse muzikant: Tito Martino: 50 anos tocando Jazz.

In december 2007 vierde de Braziliaanse klarinettist en saxofoonspeler Tito Martino zijn vijftigjarig jubileum in Jazz met een groot concert in het Auditorio Simón Bolivar in Sao Paolo (Brazilië). Tito Martino begon zijn carriere in 1957 op de ukulele-banjo en begon later klarinet te spelen met Peter Dakowsky, die hem had laten kennismaken met de muziek van Ken Colyer, Humphrey Lyttelton en Louis Armstrong. Nu, na een carriere van vijftig jaar, waarvan tien jaar in Zwitserland, is hij nog steeds actief als leider van de Tito Martino Jazz Band in Brazilië. Het feit dat zovelen dit gouden jubileum wilden vieren zegt m.i. genoeg over de populariteit van zijn muziek in Brazilie. ( = Ik ga er dus vanuit dat al deze mensen geintersseerd waren in mij en mijn muziek.)

Om het jubileum wat extra glans te geven heeft Tito Martino een album uitgebracht, getiteld Tito Martino & Friends 1957 a 2007: 50 anos tocanda Jazz (= 50 jaar in Jazz). Het album bevat 18 titels met traditionele jazz gespeeld door twee orkesten: The Original Traditional Jazz Band en de South Side Stompers. De nummers van de Original Traditional Jazz Band dateren van september 1977 en bevatten titels als Doctor Jazz, the Darktown Strutter's Ball, Mississippi Mud, en natuurlijk de Tiger Rag en The Saints; alle nummers uit het repertoir van de jaren twintig.

Today a musician from the other side of the ocean ( depends on where you live of course ) who celebrates his 50 years in music: Tito Martino. Born in Sao Paulo in 1937 Tito wasn't interested in jazz music at all - the only music he had heard was classical music, but thanks to the Buddy Bolden Blues, played by the Dutch Swing College Band he became fascinated by this kind of music. He learned that it was jazz music when he entered the university for a study in electrical engineering. He learned more about musicians like Ken Colyer, Humphrey Lyttelton, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Bunk Johnson thanks to Peter Dakowsky, who introduced him to that music. They started a band, in which he played the ukulele-banjo. When he had finished part of his study he moved to a place far away from Sao Paulo, where he started to play the clarinet and that would become his major instrument for 50 years.

In the early 1960s he started the Traditional Jazz Band, together with a Belgian trombonist Jean-Pierre Henkart, who played in the Cotton City Jazz Band and the French Les Haricots Rouges. This band became famous all over Brazil and they made several LPs. They even visited the States for a sponsored tour. In the 1970s this Traditional Jazz Band made trips to New Orleans, where they found venues to play their music. It was difficult to find gigs in Brazil around that time. In the States they became a well known band, with performances from coast to coast. When they returned to Brazil they started a jazz club, named Opus 2004, which became a very popular plays in Sao Paulo to listen to traditional jazz. A lot of international fames artists visited the club, like Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, Emanuel Sayles ( the legendary banjo player from New Orleans), Kid Thomas and Dave Brubeck. One remarkable player in their band was Bob van Oven, bass player of the Dutch Swing College Band who was with the band in Sao Paulo for a year.

In 1983 Tito had to move to Europe, as his wife got a job in Switserland and he had to retire from his band, The Traditional Jazz Band. I love to share with you another fragment, like the first one, made at his final performance with the band during a program on the Brazilian TV-network. You'll find Carlos Lima on trumpet, Bruno Christen on trombone, Tito Martino on clarinet, soprano sax, alto sax and leader, Edo Callia piano, Dudu Bugni banjo and guitar, Carlos Chaim bass and Alcides Lima drums and washboard.

In Switserland Tito Marino played in the new founded Bogalusa New Orleans Jazzband, featuring Marcello Bona at the piano. They performed at the Ascona Jazz Festival with veteran trombonist Louis Nelson. In 1993 Tito Martino returned to Sao Paulo and founded his own groups, like the Tito Martino Jazz Band and a smaller group, his Tito Martino Quintet. During the last ten years they recorded at least two CDs and played at the Bar Ca'd'Oro in Sao Paolo. I found a fragment of a concert by the Missali's New Orleans Jass Band playing the tune Chinatown My Chinatown. Tito Martino plays the clarinet as a guest player.

This fragment was recorded in 1994. Tito Martino is now retired for a few years and enjoys playing his instrument. He celebrated this year his 70th birthday. Keep swinging Tito !!

Vandaag een muzikant van de andere kant van de oceaan ( hangt er natuurlijk van af war je uithangt), die dit jaar zijn vijftigjarig jubileum in de muziek viert: Tito Martino. Geboren in 1937 in Saõ Paulo (Brazilië), was hij eigenlijk helemaal niet geinteresseerd in jazzmuziek - de enige muziek die thuis wel eens gespeeld werd was klassieke muziek. Dat werd anders toen hij een LP hoorde van de Dutch Swing College Band met daarop het nummer Buddy Bolden Blues. Hij begreep pas toen hij naar de universiteit ging voor een technische opleiding, dat dit jazz was en hoorde over Ken Colyer, Humphrey Lyttelton, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller en Bunk Johnson van Peter Dakowsky, een student, die uit Londen kwam. Ze begonnen een eigen band, waarin Tito Martino de ukulele-banjo speelde. Nadat hij zijn studie had afgerond in Saõ Paulo, startte hij een nieuwe opleiding, ver van de stad vandaan en ging klarinet spelen; het instrument dat de komende vijftig jaar zijn hoofdinstrument zou blijven. Begin jaren zestig richtte hij de Traditional Jazz Band op, samen met de Belgische trombonist Jean-Pierre Henkart, die speelde in de Cotton City Jazz Band en het Franse Les Haricots Rouges. Deze band werd over heel Brazilië bekend en maakte verschillende LPs. Ze bezochten zelfs de Verenigde Staten in een gesponsorde tournee. In de jaren zeventig maakte deze Traditional Jazz Band verschillende keren tournees naar New Orleans, waar genoeg plekken waren om hun muziek te laten horen; dat was wel anders in Brazilië, waar andere muzieksoorten meer aandacht kregen. Het was dan ook onmogelijk om in Brazilië aan de bak te komen. In de Verenigde Staten werden ze een bekende band in hun stijl en ze traden op van kust-tot-kust. Toen ze terugkeerden naar Brazilië richtten ze een jazzclub op in Sao Paulo, genaamd Opus 2004 en dit werd een populaire plek om naar traditionele jazz te gaan luisteren. Een heleboel beroemde jazzmusici traden er op, zoals Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, Emanuel Sayles ( de legendarische banjospeler uit New Orleans), Kid Thomas en Dave Brubeck. Een bijzondere gastspeler was Bob van Oven, bassist bij de Dutch Swing College Band; hij speelde een jaartje bij de Traditional Jazz Band.

In 1983 verhuisde Tito Martino naar Europa omdat zijn vrouw een baan gekregen had bij de Zwitserse omroep. Hij moest afscheid nemen van zijn geliefde band, de Traditional Jazz Band. Van het afscheidsconcert, uitgezonden door de Brazilianse TV, zijn opnamen bewaard. Je ziet en hoort Carlos Lima op trompet, Bruno Christen op trombone, Tito Martino op klarinet, sopraansax, altsax en leider, Edo Callia piano, Dudu Bugni banjo en gitaar, Carlos Chaim bas en Alcides Lima op slagwerk en wasbord: Dippermouth Blues

Zowel het eerste als het tweede filmfragment zijn van hetzelfde afscheidsconcert in 1983.

In Zwitserland ging Tito Martino spelen in de pas opgerichte Bogalusa New Orleans Jazzband, met Marcello Bona aan de piano. Ze traden o.a. op op het Ascona Jazz Festival met veteraan trombonist Louis Nelson.
