One of the first big bands I ever heard must have been Stan Kenton's Orchestra at the Rotterdam Doelen the 2nd of September, 1973.

The band did arrive at Amsterdam Airport ( Schiphol) on the 31st of August and gave two concerts in Holland, the first of September at the RAI-Gebouw in Amsterdam, as part of the Audio Fair and the next day in Rotterdam, before it left for a one-month tour along European venues in England and Germany and, to finish the tour, a concert at the Royal Elisabethhall in Antwerp). It was for the first time after 17 years that Stan Kenton returned to this part of the world. Stan had been scheduled for the 28th of April, 1956 at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
In 1973 we joined the Rotterdam concert: I remember that we could only affort "cheap" places at the balcony, located behind the band. So we could easily see Stan Kenton, but not the soloist ... .. just their backs!
I don't remember special soloists - only the massive sound and Stan Kenton in front of the band conducting it with ease. The personnel for that concert was: Dennis Noday - Paul Adamson - Mike Barrowman - Mike Snustead - Gary Pack on trumpets; Dick Shearer - Lloyd Spoon - Dale Devoe - Bill Hartman - Mike Wallace on trombone; John Park - Richard Torres - Mary Fettig - Kim Park and Roy Reynolds on saxes; Kerby Steward (double bass) - Peter Erskine (drums) - Ramon Lopez (conga) as the rhythm section and, of course, Stan Kenton at the piano. The Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
A few weeks ago Peter Varenhorst mailed me, with a request for information about the 1973 Stan Kenton concert in Rotterdam (1973) in the Grote Schouwburg ( he remembered). He joined a Stan Kenton concert for the very first time in 1953 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, twenty years earlier. His recollection was so interesting that I asked him to alow me to publish it at the Keep Swinging blog. The original programm of the European tour (1973) ( Hans Koert coleection)
Peter Varenhorst remembered ( in translation): Well, to start my recollections. I'm 77 years old, so my stories and points of view are from a greybeard. In 1953 my girl friend, who would become the mother of our three kids, and I joined the legendary concert of Stan Kenton and his orchestra, with musicians special selected for his European tour, at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. It was a great experience to join a concert in this Holy of Holies, the Concertgebouw at the Van Baerle Street. We only could affort seats on the stage itself, behind the orchestra, so we had a great view to the backs of the musicians and the "black hole" of the hall behind them. Drummer Stan Levey sat, sweating, with a towel around his neck, on a stool beside us. I've never heard a band so well - mind that my hearing was still excellent at that time. The line-up was great, and, as I said before, special selected for this European tour. It was their second concert. The line up, as I remember after all those years, was: Zoot Sims, Lee Konitz, Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino and Stan Levy. The concert was great and when it had finished it felt as if it could have been continued for a few days more. But, I'm sorry to say, we had to wait until 1973 ( BTW: The Stan Kenton Orchestra visited The Netherlands also in April 1956, but around that times Peter was in military service). In 1973 Stan the Man performed in The Netherlands again, this time at the Grote Schouwburg ( must be The Doelen) in Rotterdam and we also joined that concert. This time we had, indirectly, found seats on the third row right in front of the stage. In the second row Pi Scheffer, a famous Dutch bandleader and Willem Duys, a well known TV-host, had found seats. The venue was jam-packed. The line up of the orchestras was different, of course, from the 1953 ones. Most of the musicians were relatively young, dressed in trendy clothes, long hair cut, moustaches and full beards; a lot of bell-bottom trousers and of course knitted waistcoats ... Reed player Willy Maiden must have been one of the oldest, accept Stan of course, I remember that the band played contemporary tunes, but, unmistakable real Kenton arrrangements, like MacArthur Park; Hey Jude, but also, in a contemporaty version, the Peanut Vendor and some old ones like 23rd North 82 West ( the meridians and parallels of Havanna, Cuba). In the series of LPs "Live at ......... ", which started in 1974, I found one entitled Live at Redmonds University; the music on that album remembered me to the music the orchestra played in Rotterdam.

Peter remembers, that Bob Brookmeyer and Laurindo Almeida were part of the Augustus 1953 concert too. That seeems not correct, according to the information I found in the book One Night Stand compiled by Jaap Van Der Klomp. The line up was, according to that book: Conte Candoli - Don Dennis - Buddy Children - Vic Minichiello and Don Smith (trumpet); Frank Rosolino - Bill Russo - Keith Moon - Bob Burgess and Bill Smiley (trombone); Lee Konitz - Dave Schildkraut - Zoot Sims and Bill Holman (saxes); Tony Ferina ( baritone sax); Stan Kenton (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Don Bagley (double bass) and Stan Levey (drums). June Christy was the vocalist. Peter suggests that Willy Maiden must have been one of the eldest player at the 1973 concert, but, according to the Creative World magazine ( July 1973) ( released to support Stan's Europoean concert) Willy Maiden was not a member of the band during this trip.

One of the first great American jazz musicians I must have seen in concert was Stan Kenton. His band was scheduled in 1973 for a concert at the Rotterdam Doelen and I remember I only could affort one of the cheaper seats, behind the band on the balcony. I remember the massive sound and the easy way Stan Kenton directed the band. Also Peter Varenhorst was part of the audience. For him it was the second times he heard the Stan Kenton band. Eén van de eerste big bands die ik ooit hoorde moet die van Stan Kenton zijn geweest in 1973 in De Doelen in Rotterdam.

Het orkest was op 31 augustus 1973 geland op Schiphol en speelde op 1 september 1973 in de RAI in Amsterdam, waar toen een "Audio Fair" was ( weet iemand welke beurs?) en op 2 september waren ze te horen in De Doelen in Rotterdam, voordat ze aan een maand durende tournee begonnen langs Europese podia ( Engeland - Duitsland en afsluitend in Antwerpen in de Koningin Elizabethzaal.) Het was 17 jaar geleden dat Stan in deze regionen had gespeeld - Stan's laatste concert in Nederland was, bij mijn weten, op 28 april 1956, in het Kurhaus en het Concertgebouw. Ik herinner me dat we "goedkope" plaatsen hadden op het balkon schuin achter het orkest ............. zodat we de musici vanaf de zijkant op de rug keken - alleen Stan Kenton konden we goed zien. Ik herinner me vooral het massieve geluid en Stan, die schijnbaar moeiteloos de mastodont, zijn bijna 20-man sterke orkest door het optreden loodste. Ik herinner me geen speciale solisten, namen zeiden me toen nog niet veel, en ook nu, zijn de meeste bandleden tamelijk onbekend gebleven. De bezetting was: Dennis Noday - Paul Adamson - Mike Barrowman - Mike Snustead - Gary Pack op trompetten; Dick Shearer - Lloyd Spoon - Dale Devoe - Bill Hartman - Mike Wallace op trombone; John Park - Richard Torres - Mary Fettig - Kim Park en Roy Reynolds op sax; Kerby Steward (bas) - Peter Erskine (slagwerk) - Ramon Lopez (conga) vormden de ritme sectie en, uiteraard, Stan Kenton aan de vleugel. In een eerdere blog vertelde ik over mijn zoektocht naar "dat massieve geluid" dat ik me herinnerde. Ik vond uiteindelijk een paar jaar geleden een "Creative World" lp ( toen voor mij onbetaalbaar !), die in augustus 1970 opgenomen was op de Redlands University in Redlands( Ca). Een paar weken geleden mailde Peter Varenhorst me, die opzoek was naar meer informatie over het optreden van het Stan Kenton orkest in Rotterdam (1973) volgens hem in de Grote Schouwburg ( was De Doelen). Zijn eerste kennismaking met het orkest van Stan Kenton was tijdens het optreden van Stan in het Concertgebouw, twintig jaar daarvoor. Zijn verhaal was zo interessant en inspirerend dat ik gevraagd heb of ik het mocht opnemen in de Keep Swinging blog.

Het verhaal van Peter Varenhorst: Daar ben ik dan. Om te beginnen: ik ben 77 jaar oud, mijn verhalen en standpunten zijn dientengevolge die van een oudere kerel. in 1953 maakten mijn toenmalige vriendin, die later de moeder van onze drie kinderen zou worden, en ik het legendarische concert van Stan Kenton en zijn, speciaal voor de Europese tournee samengestelde orkest, in het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw, mee. Het was toen op zich al bijzonder om een jazz-concert daar in het heilige der heiligen, aan de Van Baerlestraat, te laten plaats vinden. Wij hadden slechts geld voor podiumplaatsen, waarbij je de musici op de rug keek, en verder het donkere gat van de zaal zag. Drummer Stan Levey zat, zwetend en wel, met een handdoek op het krukje naast zich, schuin voor ons. Nooit heb ik een orkest beter gehoord dan toen, mijn gehoor was natuurlijk ook nog ongestoord! De bezetting was grandioos, en, zoals eerder gezegd, speciaal voor de Europese reis samengesteld. Het was hun tweede optreden. Uit mijn hoofd schrijf ik, nu, na al die tijd, op: Zoot Sims, Lee Konitz, Conte Candoli, Frank Rosolino, Stan Levy. Het was geweldig, en toen het concert afgelopen was, had ik het gevoel dat ze nog wel een paar dagen door konden gaan. Helaas, dat was niet het geval: We zouden tot 1973 moeten wachten. Toen trad Stan weer in Nederland op; deze keer in de Grote Schouwburg ( = lees De Doelen) in Rotterdam, en ook dat concert maakten we mee. Deze keer hadden we via via plaatsen op rij drie, ongeveer in het midden te pakken gekregen. Vlak voor ons zaten Pi Scheffer en Willem Duys; de zaal was afgeladen vol. Deze keer was de bezetting een volslagen andere dan in 1953 in Amsterdam. Het merendeel was relatief jonge, musici in de hippe kleren van die tijd. half lang hoofdhaar, snorren en baarden; veel bell-bottom pijpen in de broeken en natuurlijk vesten! De rietblazer Willy Maiden was waarschijnlijk een van de oudste spelers, op Stan zelf na dan. Van het programma weet ik me nog te herinneren dat het, in mijn oren, echte Kenton arrangementen waren, maar wel van stukken uit die tijd: MacArthur Park; Hey Jude, maar toch ook weer, in een nieuwe jasje, de Peanut Vendor en een enkele oude als 23rd North 82 West ( de geografische coördinaten van de stad Havanna, op Cuba.] In de serie lps die begin 1974 beschikbaar kwamen met opnames in de VS gemaakt, "live at", verscheen ook een Live at Redmonds University; hetgeen hierop te horen is, komt erg overeen met wat we in Rotterdam te horen kregen. Peter geeft aan dat, volgens hem, ook Bob Brookmeyer en Laurindo Almeida aanwezig waren tijdens het concert van 30 augustus 1953. Dat klopt niet volgens de bezetting die gegeven wordt in het informatieve boekje One Night Stand samengesteld door Jaap van der Klomp. De bezeting die hij geeft is: Conte Candoli - Don Dennis - Buddy Children - Vic Minichiello en Don Smith trompet; Frank Rosolino - Bill Russo - Keith Moon - Bob Burgess en Bill Smiley trombone; Lee Konitz - Dave Schildkraut - Zoot Sims en Bill Holman saxen; Tony Ferina baritonsax; Stan Kenton piano; Barry Galbraith gitaar; Don Bagley bas en Stan Levey slagwerk. June Christy was aanwezig als zangeres. Bij het concert van 1993 geeft Peter aan dat Willy Maiden één van de oudste muzikanten van de band was - in de bezetting, zoals aangegeven in het blad van Creative World ( juli 1973) wordt Willy Maiden niet in de bezetting genoemd.

Eén van de eerste grote Amerikanen, die ik ooit live hoorde spelen was Stan Kenton. Ze traden op in De Doelen in Rotterdam en we vonden een plaatsje op het balkon schuin achter de muzikanten. Ik herinner me het massieve geluid en het schijnbaar moeiteloze leiden van Stan Kenton. Ook Peter Varenhorst zat in de zaal. Voor hem was het een hernieuwde kennismaking. Hij hoorde Stan the Man ook al in 1953 in het Congresgebouw in Amsterdam. Hij vertelt zijn herinneringen aan dat concert. De Keep Swinging blog kijkt graag terug naar het verleden. There are a lot of reasons why you could decide to buy one of these beautiful ochre - black covered 2LPs from the Creative World Of Stan Kenton. I have found two and since I played it three good arguments. First of all - I couldn't afford one when I was a young adult. Such a well designed cover in my collection was an unattainable ideal. The copy I found at a record fair some weeks ago has a sticker that reads 19.90, probably the 1975 price of it in Dutch guilders.

The second excuse to buy this 2LP is the fact that Stan Kenton was the first great American jazz artist I saw live at stage. It was my first experience with the true jazz scene. I had seen The Dutch Swing College, Turk Murphy's Jazz Band even Frank Wright, the free jazz tenor player á la Albert Ayler, but the concert on the 2nd of September 1973 in the Doelen in Rotterdam was an unforgetable experience. I remember that we had seats behind the orchestra, so we had a good view on Stan The Man. I remember the massive sound of the band, and since that concert I have been searching for a recording that remembered me to that sound. I bought my self the Capitol twofer Stan Kenton - Three Decades of Big Band Development and the Stan Kenton Retrospective 4CD set but all were compilations concentrated on the great recordings of the 1950s.

With the 2LP Stan Kenton and his Orchestra Live At Redlands University ( ST-1015) I finally found the sound I had heard during that concert 33 years ago. The album is a registration from a final concert at a Kenton clinics for student musicians, music educators and the teaching staff of the Redlands University October 1970. The Stan Kenton Orchestra, I count 19 members, was in the latter days of its career. New music styles had a negative effect on popularity and sales figures of big band jazz and it was hard, not only for Kenton, to keep this large orchestra on tour. No big names in the band, except Stan Kenton of course, but a great sound thanks to the arrangements of Dee Barton ( what a great opener in Here's That Rainy Day) Bill Holman, Willie Maiden and others. This registration is one of the numerous Live At ... ( Brigham Young University - At London Hilton - At Carthage College, At The Sunset Ridge Country Club - At Newport ) releases, not his best, but for me a great remembrance to that memorable concert in Rotterdam.

Er zijn een heleboel redenen te verzinnen om één van die schitterende oker-zwarte LPs uit de serie The Creative World Of Stan Kenton aan te schaffen. Ik heb er twee en sinds ik er één beluisterd heb, drie goede argumenten gevonden. Ten eerste - Ik kon me vroeger, als tiener, deze platenserie met mooi ontworpen hoezen niet veroorloven. Het was een onbereikbaar ideaal. De plaat die ik onlangs vond heeft nog een stickertje met daarop 19,90, waarschijnlijk de prijs in guldens uit 1975, toen de vorige eigenaar deze plaat kocht.

Het tweede goede argument is dat Stan Kenton mijn eerste echte grote Amerikaanse jazzartiest was, die ik zag en hoorde spelen live op het podium. En dat heeft indruk gemaakt !! Het was mijn eerste ervaring met het echte werk. Okay, ik had de Dutch Swing College Band, Turk Murphy's Jazz Band en zelfs Frank Wright, de free jazz tenorsaxofonist á la Albert Ayler, gehoord, maar het concert van 2 september 1973 in de Doelen in Rotterdam was voor mij een onvergetelijke ervaring. Ik herinner me dat we plaatsen hadden op de eerste ring achter het orkest ( goedkoop ! ) en dat we een goed zicht hadden op Stan The Man. Verder herinner ik me het massieve geluid van de band en sinds dat concert ben ik eigenlijk altijd op zoek geweest naar die sound. Ik kocht de Capitol dubbel LP Stan Kenton - Three Decades of Big Band Development en The Stan Kenton Retrospective 4CD set, maar deze bevatten voornamelijk registraties uit de gloriedagen in de jaren veertig en vijftig van de vorige eeuw.

Met de dubbel LP Stan Kenton and his Orchestra Live At Redlands University ( ST-1015) vond ik eindelijk dat massieve geluid zoals ik me dat herinnerde van dat concert van 33 jaar geleden. De plaat is een registratie van een concert dat Stan Kenton en zijn orkest gaf als afsluiting van één van zijn clinics voor jonge musici en hun leerkrachten van de Redlands University in oktober 1970. Het Stan Kenton Orchestra, 19 leden tel ik, zat al in zijn nadagen. De groeiende belangstelling voor nieuwe muziekstijlen had de platenverkoop en interesse voor dit soort big band jazz drastisch doen verminderen en het werd steeds moeilijker om dit soort grote orkesten, Kenton incluis, op de been te houden. Geen grote namen in de band, behalve natuurlijk Stan Kenton zelf, maar wel schitterende arrangementen van Dee Barton ( wat een mooie opening is zijn Here's That Rainy Day), Bill Holman, Willie Maiden en anderen. Deze plaat is één van de vele Live At ..... op rij ( Brigham Young University - At London Hilton - At Carthage College, At The Sunset Ridge Country Club - At Newport ) en zeker niet zijn beste, maar voor mij is het een mooie herinnering aan dat gedenkwaardige concert in Rotterdam.

Ik vond een fragment van een concert uit 1965 van het Stan Kenton Orkest vanuit de Rendezvous Ballroom; ze spelen Intermission Riff.
