In de eerste dagen van oktober 1900 neemt de Sousa Band zes nummers op in drie dagen voor Victor. Deze opnamen vonden plaats in Philadelphia. De Sousa band was een groot concertorkest dat de populaire muziek van het eind van de negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw speelde. In het voorjaar en de zomer van 1900 komen ze zelfs naar Europa toe en laten ons kennismaken met de ragtime.

Eén van de opgenomen nummers was Whistling Rufus, een paar jaar eerder geschreven door Kerry Mills. Dit nummer noemde men een cakewalk - een uitvinding van de blanke Amerikanen, een dans, direct gerelateerd aan de mars, die Sousa ( en andere bands uit die tijd) graag speelden. Met dit nummer, Whistling Rufus, werd Sousa erg bekend en ze reisden van kust tot kust, en boekten overal veel succes met hun "cakewalks", die een hele gekte veroorzaakte: The Cakewalk-craze.

Het nummer kreeg later ook tekst, geschreven door W. Murdock Lind.

De diepere betekenis achter de tekst voedde echter de rassenongelijkheid, zoals dat in het zuiden van de VS nog volop heerste en de tekst bevestigde alleen maar de vooroordelen van de blanke Amerikaan.

And when he got through with the chicken and the wine,

Then he whistled and he sung so grand

That they thought the angels' harps was a-playing.

And they called him the one-band man.

Ik moet dit nummer al als kind onwillekeurig vele malen op de radio gehoord hebben, want het is zo'n nummer waarvan de melodie in je hoofd blijft zitten, want bijna iedereen kent alleen de instrumentale versie. Ik vond een prachtige fingerpicking uitvoering op een sopraanukulele, gespeeld op de manier zoals Vess L. Ossman dit in mei 1900 op plaat vastlegde.

LES TRICHEURS
On the 9th of October 1958, the French movie Les Tricheurs was opened in French cinemas. It is a film about young people from the beatniks generation. A young Parisian college girl gets involved in that group and, like in any film I guess, gets in love. Well, for me the story isn't interesting, but it's the music that hits me!
The 50 year old music of this film is very interesting as it is one of those films that has some great musicians used for the soundtrack. Part of the film has music by rockers like Fats Domino and the Champs, but most of the film music was played by an all-star band featuring Roy Eldridge, Mezz Mezzrow, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Peterson, Herb Ellis, Ray brown and Gus Johnson.

Music supports the shots made in a film and a lot of musicians got a living by playing film music in studios all around the States and Europe. This sound track was recorded on the first of May 1958 in Paris, supervised by Norman Granz. Whistling Rufus - Cakewalk

Early October 1900 the Sousa Band recorded six tunes in three days for Victor. The recordings were made in Philadelphia on the first three days of that month. The Sousa band was a large concert band that played the popular music of the late 1890s and early 1900s all around the States, but also in Europe. They travelled to Europe in the spring and summer of 1900 and brought us the ragtime music. One of the tunes they recorded was Whistling Rufus, written by Kerry Mills a few years earlier.

This tune was called a cakewalk - a white-men's invention - directly related to the marches, as Sousa ( and other bands) played. This tune, Whistling Rufus, made Sousa's band famous and he travelled from coast to coast, people entertaining with the music during the so-called cakewalk-dance craze.

The tune got lyrics by W. Murdock Lind years later, but the song became a racial discrimination symbol:

I remember that tune as a kid - one of those traditionals you have heard somewhere on the radio and it never leaves your head. I found it played on a soprano ukulele in the Vess L. Ossman version from May 1900.

John Philips Sousa was born in 1854 and passed away in 1932.

LITTLE WILLIE LITTLEFIELD in KAMPERLAND

Op zondag 25 oktober 2008 treedt de boogie woogie pianist Little Willie Littlefield op in de Zeelandnet-studio in Kamperland.
Dit bijzondere optreden maakt deel uit van het seizoensprogramma van Het Nut, dat optredens en culturele evenementen verzorgd op Noord Beveland.

Little Willie Littlefield behaalde zijn eerste successen eind jaren veertig met de plaat Little Willie's Boogie. Het werd een hit in Houston en omstreken waar hij woonde en platenbonzen aan de westkust haalden deze teenage wonderboy pianist naar Los Angeles, waar hij een plaat opnam, die van kust tot kust een groot succes werd: It's Midnight. Hij ging optreden in clubs als de Melody Club in Los Angeles en de Barrelhouse in Watts. Door deze hits vestigde hij zijn naam in de Rhythm & Blues en er volgden in de jaren vijftig nog heel wat meer hits, zoals Kansas City en Ruby Ruby. Sinds de jaren tachtig reisde Little Willie regelmatig door Europa en maakte hier een tiental albums. In 2000 ging hij met pensioen en ging in Nederland wonen, maar keerde een aantal jaren later weer terug in het circuit. I went fishing for five years - now I know every herring in Holland by name - it got boring. ( = Ik ging vijf jaar lang vissen - nu ken ik elke haring in Nederland persoonlijk en dat gaat vervelen): zegt hij op zijn website. I feel great and I want to be back with my audience ( = Ik voel me nog goed en daarom wil ik weer bij mijn publiek zijn). Het is niet de eerste keer dat Little Willie Littlefield op Noord Beveland optreedt; zes jaar geleden was hij al eens in Wissekerke.
