A few weeks ago I was pointed to the latest album of the Brazilian vocalist Ceumar, who lives and works in Amsterdam. Her fifth record, entitled Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam was released early this year. It was recorded at the Theatre of the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam February 2009 and Ceumar was accompanied by a Dutch jazz trio featuring Mike Del Ferro at the piano, Frans Van Der Hoeven double bass and Olaf Keus drums.

Ceumar Coelho, Ceu means heaven and Mar sea, was born early 1970s in the Brazilian city Itanhandu in the province of Minas Gerais.
She was raised in a musical family - Her father was a musician too and her mother loved to sing. She studied the violin, but her passion was singing, like her mother, who sung the music she heard on the radio. This popular music was called MPB, the Musica Popular Brasileira. A musical style born late 1960s - early 1970s, which contains a heterogeneous group of musicians, a generation of artists like Gilberto Gil, vocalist Elis Regina and Maria Bethania to list a few. This music style became popular at a political unpleasant period for a lot of Brazilians, who lived in a climate of growing fear and repression, and in the mid 1960s musical festivals became a vital cultural outlet for the Brazilians. During these festivals a jury of musicians, journalists, nominated artists to perform and the best were rewarded with trophies and prizes. Singer, guitarist and composer Caetano Veloso, singer-guitarist Milton Nascimento and artists like the 1966 winner Chico Buarque de Hollanda (1966), a singer-songwriter from Rio, were some artists Ceumar must have influenced her ...... This MPB can best described as a mix of Jazz and soul and the traditional samba-music.

She started to sing at bars in the province of Minas Garais, US and Brazilian pop songs, before she left, in 1995, for Sao Paulo. There she met Zeca Baleiro, which whom she recorded in 2000 her debut album entitled Dindinha and she became known at festivals all over South America. Thanks to this first album she was one of the artist to play at the Belgian Sfinks Festival 26th of July 2003. Between 2000 and 2009 she released three more albums: Sempre Viva, Achou! and Meu Nome, a live solo recording of a concert at the FECAP-theatre ( Sao Paulo ). In 2005 Mike Del Ferro and his Trio played at a festival in Brazil and there they met, which resulted in an European tour. In 2009 she moved to Amsterdam and started to perform again with the Mike Del Ferro Trio. Her latest album, entitled Live in Amsterdam was released earlier this year.

Ceumar is accompanied by three skilled jazz musicians. Mike Del Ferro studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory. He toured all around the world with an impressive list of jazz musicians. In 2000 he recorded a remarkable record I have in my collection, entitled Mike Del Ferro plays Belcanto, in which he plays classical Belcanto songs by classical composers like Verdi, Puccini and Nebucco, to list some, in the jazz idiom. Frans Van Der Hoeven is to be heard on numerous albums and played with Jesse Van Ruller, Bert Joris, Tineke Postma, Fay Claasen and Jeroen Van Vliet. I heard Frans once at a concert with the Jesse Van Ruller trio (+ Bert Joris) at a concert in Porgy en Bess Terneuzen (The Netherlands) (February 2005). Olaf Keus is a percussionists, who often played with South American musicians, like Ramon Valle, singer Deborah J. Carter and the Surinam flute player Ronald Snijder.

The album Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam contains nine tracks - almost half are own compositions. One of those own compositions is Jabuticaba Madura about the Brazilian fruit named Jabuticaba. I found a fragment of it I love to share with you:

Two tracks, Dindinha and Pecadinhos, were composed by Zeca Baleiro, who was present on her first album Dindinha, and now released in a live version. The tune Girias do Norte, which I really appreciate, is originally from the north of Brazil. This rhythm is labelled as coco and was made popular by José Gomes Filho, aka Jackson do Pandeiro. I love to finish with this tune as recorded at the Dutch TV-program VPRO Vrije Geluiden.

Een paar weken geleden werd ik gewezen op de nieuwste plaat van de Braziliaanse gitarist en zangeres Ceumar, die woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Haar vijfde plaat, getiteld Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam werd eerder dit jaar uitgebracht. Het werd opgenomen in februari 2009 in het theater van het Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam en daar werd ze begeleid door een jazztrio bestaande uit Mike Del Ferro aan de piano, Frans van der Hoeven bas en Olaf Keus slagwerk.

Ceumar Coelho, Ceu betekent "hemel"en Mar "zee", werd geboren begin jaren zeventig in de Braziliaanse stad Itanhandu in de provincie Minas Gerais.


Ze groeide op in een muzikaal gezin - vader was muzikant en haar moeder zong graag. Ze studeerde viool, maar haar passie lag bij zingen, net als haar moeder, die meezong met de populaire liedjes van de radio. De populaire muziek, die toen vooral op de radio klonk wordt ook wel MPB genoemd, dat staat voor Musica Popular Brasileira. Een muziekstijl die ontstond eind jaren zestig - begin jaren zeventig en een heterogene groep musici bevatte, een generatie artiesten, zoals Gilberto Gil, zangeres Elis Regina en Maria Bethania om er een paar te noemen. Deze muziek werd populair in een donkere periode in de Braziliaanse politiek; een onplezierige periode met een politiek klimaat van toenemende angst en onderdrukking.
Midden jaren zestig kreeg die muziekstijl een boost dankzij populaire tv-festivals - voor de onderdrukte bevolking een soort muzikale uitlaatklep. Tijdens deze tv-festivals, die rechtstreeks uitgezonden werden, wees een jury van musici, critici en journalisten winnaars aan die in de prijzen vielen. Zanger, gitarist en componist Caetano Veloso, zanger-gitarist Milton Nascimento en artiesten zoals Chico Buarque de Hollanda, een singer-songwriter uit Rio, die in 1966 bij de winnaars hoorde, waren artiesten die grote indruk maakten op Ceumar en haar beïnvloed moeten hebben ....... Deze MPB kan het best omschreven worden als een mix van Jazz en soul en de traditionele sambamuziek.

Ze begon naam te maken door Amerikaanse- en Braziliaanse hits te zingen in cafés in de regio Minas Garais, voordat ze in 1995 naar de wereldstad Sao Paulo verhuisde.
Hier ontmoette ze Zeca Baleiro, met wie ze in 2000 haar debuutalbum Dindinha maakte, wat haar op de podia van allerlei muziekfestival in Zuid-Amerika bracht. Dankzij dit eerste album werd ze uitgenodigd om in juli 2003 op te treden op het Belgische Sfinks Festival. Tussen 2000 en 2009 bracht ze nog drie platen uit: Sempre Viva, Achou! en Meu Nome, de laatstgenoemde een registratie van een live-optreden in het FECAP-theater van Sao Paulo. In 2005 ontmoette ze op één van die Zuid Amerikaanse festival Mike del Ferro en zijn trio en uit deze ontmoeting vloeide een Europese tournee voort. In 2009 verhuisde ze naar Amsterdam en begon hier weer op te treden met Mike Del Ferro - haar laatste album Live in Amsterdam, eerder dit jaar uitgebracht, is hiervan een resultaat.

Ceumar wordt begeleid door drie ervaren jazzmuzikanten. Mike Del Ferro studeerde aan het conservatorium van Amsterdam. Hij reisde de hele wereld door met een indrukwekkende lijst musici en speelt graag en vaak met musici uit andere culturen. In 2000 maakte hij een plaat, die ik in mijn verzameling tegenkwam, getiteld Mike Del Ferro plays Belcanto, waarin hij klassieke Belcanto liederen gecomponeerd door bijvoorbeeld Verdi, Puccini en Nebucco, om er een paar te noemen, omvormt tot jazznummers. Frans van der Hoeven speelt op honderden (!) platen mee als bassist met musici als Jesse van Ruller, Bert Joris, Tineke Postma, Fay Claasen en Jeroen van Vliet. Ik hoorde hem in februari 2005 op bas met het Jesse van Ruller trio (+ Bert Joris) tijdens een concert in Porgy en Bess Terneuzen. Olaf Keus is een slagwerker, die vaak optreedt met muzikanten uit Zuid Amerika, zoals Ramon Valle, zangeres Deborah J. Carter en de Surinaamse fluitist Ronald Snijder.

De plaat Ceumar & trio - Live in Amsterdam bevat negen nummers, waarvan bijna de helft eigen composities. Eén van die eigen nummers is Jabuticaba Madura, dat gaat over een Braziliaanse vrucht genaamd Jabuticaba. Ik vond een fragment van dit nummer dat ik graag wil laten horen.

Twee nummers, Dindinha en Pecadinhos, zijn van de hand van Zeca Baleiro, die ook op haar gelijknamige eerste plaat meespeelde en produceerde: Dindinha en nu voor het eerst in een live-versie te horen is. Girias do Norte, een geweldig nummer, komt oorspronkelijk uit het noorden van Brazilië. Het ritme dat je hoort heet coco en werd populair gemaakt door José Gomes Filho, beter bekend als Jackson do Pandeiro. Ik wil afsluiten met dit nummer gespeeld tijdens het VPRO programma Vrije Geluiden.

Dit optreden in het Tropentheater in Amsterdam is uitgebracht en al weer het vijfde album van deze Braziliaanse zangeres, die in haar moederland als zangeres en componist sinds 2000 een carriere heeft opgebouwd. Ugly Beauty

On the first and second of March 2003, five years ago, a group titled Ugly Beauty visited the Le Roy Studio in Amsterdam for a recording session. The recordings were released on the DayBreak label as Ugly Beauty The Music of Thelonious Monk.
The band Ugly Beauty features Robert Jan Vermeulen, leader and piano player, Benjamin Herman on the alto saxophone, Frans van der Hoeven on bass and Han Bennink on drums. The music is ... the music of Thelonious Monk, the headstrong weird piano player and composer in bebop who made tenth of easily recognizable compositions like Off Minor, Straight No Chaser, Epistrophy, Pannonica, to his patronesse Baronness Pannonica De Koenigswarter (Nica for short) and Ugly Beauty, the title song of the album (and name of the band). For me, Thelonious Monk, is unique and his music is great, it almost hypnotizes its listeners. You only have to hear two or three bars to recognize a Thelonious Monk composition; some experts say that you only have to hear one note (!)
Robert Jan Vermeulen made an album with some great soloists, like Benjamin Herman as the Charlie Rouse on alto saxophone. Benjamin Herman belongs now to the most promising alto saxophone players in Western Europe and I remember his great performance in the Porgy en Bess Jazz Club in Terneuzen ( in the south west part of The Netherlands) a year ago dedicated to his new album The Itch. Frans Van Der Hoeven, the bass player, who has a steady drive and solid base, an excellent combination in Monk's music I guess, performed in Porgy en Bess too with the Jesse Van Ruller Trio (+ Bert Joris) concert February 2005. Han Bennink, the nestor of jazz drummers, don't needs further introduction. I heard him for the very first time when he still was a young guy ( and so was I of course) in the 1960s at the concerts with the Dutch Instant Composers Pool and Willem Breuker Kollektief at The Nieuwe Muziek concerts in Middelburg (southwest part of The Netherlands).

Robert Jan Vermeulen was born in 1957 and studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and was a student of Kenny Werner in New York City. He is the founder of the Amsterdam Jazz Quintet. The group Ugly Beauty was special founded to play the music of Thelonious Monk. A few years ago they founded the group Talking Cows, dedicated to Misha Mengelberg, the Dutch piano player and composer that was influenced by Thelonious Monk, but has his own great sound. One of the pieces on the Ugly Beauty recordings is not a Monk, but a Misha Mengelberg composition: Kneebus.

I love to show you the best docu-clip ever made ( in my opinion) made around one of Robert Jan Vermeulen's compositions Bovinity played by his Talking Cows. In fact it was made as a promotion for the Skip Intro advertisement agency and I love to show you a fragment with English subtitles.

I hope to hear this excellent band soon in a concert or to listen to this album Talking Cows.

Op één en twee maart 2003, vijf jaar geleden, bezocht een groep muzikanten de Le Roy Studio in Amsterdam voor een opnamesessie. Ze namen een plaat voor het DayBreak label op, getiteld Ugly Beauty The Music of Thelonious Monk.
De groep Ugly Beauty bestaat uit Robert Jan Vermeulen, leider en pianist, Benjamin Herman op altsax, Frans van der Hoeven op bas en Han Bennink op slagwerk. De muziek die ze spelen is ... the music of Thelonious Monk, de wat vreemde eigenzinnige pianist en componist uit de bebopperiode, die tientallen gemakkelijk te herkennen composities maakte zoals Off Minor, Straight No Chaser, Epistrophy, Pannonica, genoemd naar zijn beschermvrouwe Baronness Pannonica De Koenigswarter (Nica voor intimi) en het titelnummer van de CD (en naam van de groep) Ugly Beauty. Voor mij is Thelonious Monk uniek en zijn muziek is onvergelijkbaar; muziek die de luisteraar haast hypnotiseert. Je hoeft maar twee of drie maten te horen en je herkent Monk ..... sommigen beweren dat je aan één noot genoeg hebt (!) Robert Jan Vermeulen maakte dit eerbetoon aan Monk met een aantal ervaren solisten, zoals Benjamin Herman als de Charlie Rouse, maar dan op altsax. Benjamin Herman behoort tot de groep veelbelovende jonge altsaxofonisten van West Europa en ik herinner me zijn schittterende optreden van een jaar geleden in Porgy en Bess in Terneuzen, opgebouwd rond zijn nieuwe CD The Itch. Frans Van Der Hoeven, de bassist die onverstoorbaar een stevige basis weet te leggen; een belangrijke eigenschap bij Monk's muziek, heb ik ooit bij het Jesse Van Ruller Trio met Bert Joris gehoord in een concert in Porgy en Bess in February 2005. Han Bennink, de nestor van de jazzdrum, behoeft haast geen nadere introductie. Ik hoorde hem voor het eerst als jonge drummer tijdens de concerten van Nieuwe Muziek in Middelburg met groepen als de Instant Composers Pool ( ICP) en het Willem Breuker Kollektief.

Robert Jan Vermeulen is geboren in 1957 en studeerde aan het Haags Conservatorium en in New York met onder andere pianist Kenny Werner. Hij richtte het Amsterdam Jazz Quintet op. De groep Ugly Beauty werd speciaal gevormd om de muziek van Thelonious Monk te spelen. Een paar jaar geleden ontstond de groep Talking Cows, gewijd aan de muziek van Misha Mengelberg, de Nederlandse pianist en componist, die zo door Monk is beinvloed, maar een geheel eigen stijl heeft ontwikkeld. Op de Monk CD Ugly Beauty, is dan ook één compositie van hem terug te vinden: Kneebus. Eén van de composities van Robert Jan Vermeulen, Bovinity, wil ik graag laten zien, aangezien de video clip, docu-clip noemen ze het, schitterend is en wat mij betreft de beste clip ooit gemaakt rond een jazzgroep. Eigenlijk is het een reclamefilm voor het reclamebureau Skip Intro en ik vind het leuk om het nu, met Engelse ondertiteling, te kunnen laten zien.

Ik hoop de band Talking Cows nog eens te kunnen zien optreden of hun plaat te kunnen bespreken.
