Oh Meisje

Eight months ago I pointed you to a young Dutch vocalist, Esther Groenenberg, who became certificated on the school of Music in Zwolle, a city in the eastern part of The Netherlands. I was pointed to this young talented vocalist because of a fragment I found, where she sung Zuurkool Met Worst in the Paul De Leeuw TV show. I liked that fragment, because she sung a very swinging scat-vocal in that program and even succeeded in stopping Paul, who normally makes his presence very much felt. You can see this fragment again, if you like, at my contribution The Magic Of Jazz. (second fragment).

A few months ago she sung this song, Zuurkool Met Worst, refering to her favourite dish sauerkraut with a smoked sausage with her band in a radio program and I love to share you a fragment of it.

Now Esther Groenenberg is preparing a CD that will be released in the summer of 2009. She announced last weekend that one of the video clips, that belongs to her new song Oh Meisje ( = Oh Little Girl), has been released and is available now.

The song Oh Meisje wants to be a call, a warning to all young girls and women to be satisfied with their bodies and a call to be happy with it, to enjoy life and be satisfied with theirselfs: no liposuction or other adjusments to their bodies. The song itself, the voice of Esther, reminded me to Fay Lovsky, the Dutch vocalist, who is one of my favorite singers, but, unfortunally, she hasn't performing in Holland, as far as I know, since her last 2004 theater tour Survivalmuziek - Maze of Mirrors Tour, I saw in Middelburg, in the south west part of The Netherlands somewhere in 2004. She is a member of the French band Les Primitif de Futur, that made a tour through the States a few years ago. I hope Fay Lovsky will return in Dutch and Belgian theatres soon: Fay Lovsky Come Back ( a quote which refers to the 1970s call of the late Fred Cigar Canté Rollins Come Back)

Let's return to Oh Meisje. Even if you don't understand the Dutch language (most of you won't), you will learn that Esther Groenenberg is a very nice jazz vocalist and this well made video clip, by Leonie Meijer, is really entertaining with a very serious message to all young girls and women: Oh meisje vergeet niet te leven (= Little girl, don't forget to live) - Meisje vergeet niet te genieten ( = don't forget to enjoy.) - Je bent jong en je bent mooi al zou je dunner willen zijn ( = You're young, you're pretty, even it you love to be more slim ), dus vergeet niet te leven, want het leven is fijn (= so, don't forget to live, because life is great !! ). A very serious problem among young women I heard!!

I'm anxious to hear Esther Groenenberg's new album next summer.

HOT CLUB DE BOEDO:
The Argentine Hot Club de Boedo announces in its latest blog a concert at the Teatro Roma in Buenos Aires dedicated to Oscar Aleman. ( Homenaja a Oscar Aleman). The concert has been scedulded for the 24th of July 2008 at 9.00 p.m.
The members of the band are Waldo Fonseca: guitarra y dirección (= guitar and leader); Heldo Fonseca: clarinete (= clarinet); Martín López Goitía: guitarra rítmica (= rhythm guitar) and Julián Pierángeli: bajo (= drums). This band, now playing for eight years in Buenos Aires and its surroundings, wants to share the music of Oscar Aleman.

Reconocido por experto holandés Hans Koert por mantener viva la herencia musical de Oscar Alemán, Hot Club de Boedo con ocho años de labor ininterrumpida es el grupo mas activo de la escena porteña y un indiscutible referente de este estilo.

Although it seems as if Waldo loves to make me responsable for the renewed interests in Oscar Aleman's musicial heritage, refering to the quote above from his blog ( too much honor Waldo) it is the Hot Club de Boedo self, who is fully responsable for its success. Congratulations Waldo, Heldo, Martin and Julian. Hope we'll meet once !!

Acht maanden geleden inroduceerde ik in deze blog een jonge Nederlandse zangeres, Esther Groenenberg, die toen net examen had gedaan op het conservatorium van Zwolle. Ik was haar "op het spoor gekomen" dankzij een optreden dat ik zag bij Paul de Leeuw, waarin ze op een bijzondere wijze het nummer Zuurkool met Worst zong, of beter scatte en daarbij zelfs Paul de Leeuw helemaal stil kreeg. Krijg dat maar eens voor elkaar. Ik vond dat een schitterend fragment en plaatste dat in de bijdrage The Magic Of Jazz, waar het nog steeds te zien is. (zie het tweede fragment)

Een paar maanden geleden zong ze hetzelfde nummer over haar lievelingsgerecht met haar band in een radio-opname en hiervan zijn ook beelden gemaakt: Zuurkool Met Worst.

Momenteel is Esther Groenenberg bezig met de voorbereidingen voor haar eerste CD, die komende zomer uit moet komen. Afgelopen weekend kondigde ze aan dat één van de nummers voor dit album klaar is en daarvan is een videoclip gemaakt: Oh Meisje.

Het nummer wil een waarschuwing zijn, voor alle meisjes en jonge vrouwen die niet tevreden zijn over hun lichaam en hen oproepen om vooral te genieten van het leven en tevreden te zijn met zichzelf: geen liposuctie of andere figuurcorrigerende operaties voor hen. Toen ik het nummer hoorde en Esther's stem hoorde, moest ik onwillekeurig denken aan Fay Lovsky, één van mijn meest favoriete Nederlandse zangeressen, die, voor zover ik weet, sinds haar laatste grote Maze of Mirrors Tour in 2004, met als titel Survivalmuziek niet vaak meer in Nederland optreedt. Ik zag deze geweldige show in Middelburg, herinner ik me. Ze speelt ook bij de Franse band Les Primitif de Futur, waarmee ze een paar jaar geleden nog een tournee maakte door de Verenigde staten. Ik denk dat het tijd wordt dat we Fay weer eens in een theatershow in Nederland en België kunnen zien en horen. Terug naar Esther Groenenberg en Oh Meisje. Ze is een geweldig ambitieus en een veelbelovend jazzzangeres en je zult dit moeten beamen als je de door Leonie Meijer mooi gemaakte videoclip bekijkt, al is de boodschap voor alle meisjes en jonge frouwen uiterst serieus bedoeld: Oh meisje vergeet niet te leven - Meisje vergeet niet te genieten - Je bent jong en je bent mooi al zou je dunner willen zijn, dus vergeet niet te leven, want het leven is fijn. Een serieus probleem onder jonge vrouwen heb ik me laten vertellen !!

De Hot Club de Boedo uit Argentinië kondigt in hun laatste blog een concert aan in het Teatro Roma in Buenos Aires gewijd aan de muziek van Oscar Aleman. ( Homenaja a Oscar Aleman). Het concert staat gepland op 24 juli 2008 om 21.00 uur.( Mocht je in de buurt zijn .....)

Hoewel Waldo in zijn blog in bovenstaand citaat mij medeverantwoordelijk maakt voor de hernieuwde belangstelling voor Oscar Aleman's muzikale erfenis (te veel eer Waldo) zijn het toch echt de leden van de Hot Club de Boedo zelf die verantwoordelijk zijn voor hun succes. Gefeliciteerd Waldo, Heldo, Martin en Julian. Het zou leuk zijn als we elkaar een keer konden ontmoeten!!

The Magic of Jazz

In June 2007 a 23 year young vocalist, Esther Groenenberg, finished her exam at the Zwolle School of Music with a concert at The Odeon, a venue in the city of Zwolle ( in the center of The Netherlands ). She succeeded and the concert became a great event. She also sings in a group called Fourtress. It wouldn't surprise me if she would become a star in jazz vocal. The film fragment shows some impressions of this show.

This week I found another fragment of a TV show ( thanks to Zuurkool.com and Jan T. of Vreemde Geluiden ) of one of the most popular show masters of The Netherlands, Paul de Leeuw. Paul has a show titled Mooi Weer De Leeuw, very popular due to the fact that Paul is a rather lively extrovert personality with a, sometimes, rather crude kind of humour. In other words, he is the center of all excitement. I found a film fragment of one of the Paul de Leeuw shows, where he has invited a duo, containing our Esther Groenenberg and a bass player named Julia. She was invited to sing a song, titled Zuurkool met Worst ( = Sauerkraut with sausage ), one of the songs she sung at her exam. Esther scats this song almost a capella accompanied with the bass player and some accompaniment of Cor Bakker's Orchestra only. The song contains no more then a sung recipe for this kind of food ( so in fact a rather nonsense text ) and she scats it on a melody originally performed by Ella Fitzgerald .

I love to share with you a fragment of this show with Paul de Leeuw featuring Esther Groenenberg and when I viewed it for the very first time something magical happened. Paul, extrovert like always, makes a lot of noise and has them all laughing while he is joking with Esther and the public and then ...... she's start to scat her song Zuurkool met Worst and then happens
someting miraculous......... Paul falls silent, she holds his attention, she winds him and the audience around her little finger .....

It's magic what happens here. It's pure - it's what jazz can do, I guess. It is, in my opinion, one of those rare moments where jazz shows his magic. Great Esther - thanks for that moment!!

In juni 2007 gaf de 23 jarige zangeres, Esther Groenenberg, een examenoptreden voor het conservatorium van Zwolle een optreden in het Odeon in Zwolle. Het werd een groot succes en ze slaagde met lof. Esther maakt deel uit van de groep Fourtress. Het filmfragment laat een impressie van dit concert zien.

Deze week vond ik een fragment van een TV programma ( dankzij Zuurkool.com en Jan T. van Vreemde Geluiden ) van een deel van de TV show Mooi Weer De Leeuw zoals die gepresenteerd werd door Paul de Leeuw, onze populaire showmaster van dit moment. Paul is een tamelijk levendige, extroverte persoonlijkheid, die met zijn vaak harde grappen en specifieke humor alle aandacht naar zich toe weet te trekken. Met andere woorden; hij is duidelijk aanwezig tijdens de uitzending. In het fragment van één van de Paul de Leeuw shows heeft hij een duo uitgenodigd: Ester Groenenberg en een bassiste genaamd Julia. Ze gaan scatten. Ze zingt het lied Zuurkool met Worst, één van de nummers die ze ook op haar examen optreden gezongen heeft. Ze scat het lied bijna a-cappella, met alleen Judith op de bas en wat ondersteunende klanken van het orkest van Cor Bakker. De tekst van het lied stelt niet veel voor en maakt het daardoor zo bijzonder: het is niet meer dan een recept om zuurkool met worst te maken; de melodie heeft ze geleend van niemand minder dan Ella Fitzgerald. Ik vind het leuk om jullie dat fragment te laten zien en wel omdat er volgens mij iets bijzonders gebeurde. Paul, zoals altijd druk druk druk .... op het randje van wat kan en niet kan, en dan begint Esther te scatten .... Zuurkool met Worst ..... Paul valt zichtbaar stil en is geboeid. Dan lijkt hij te beseffen dat hij e.e.a. niet meer in de hand heeft en grijpt weer de macht, die door Esther Groenenberg genadeloos wordt getackeld. Ze windt het publiek en de kijkers om haar vinger. Dat is wat ik zag en opmerkte. Is dat niet geweldig?

It's magic. Het is puur - dit is de magie van de jazz. Dit is zo'n zeldzaam moment waarin jazz zijn kracht laat zien. Het grijpt alle aandacht en niemand ontkomt er aan. Fantastisch Esther, dat je dat voor elkaar kreeg. Dat komt wel goed met jouw carriere !!
