Oscar Alemán: su fallecimiento. ( = Oscar Alemán: passed away). El guitarrista Oscar Alemán qur tuviera notable actuación en radiotelefonia en las décadas del 30 al 50 (sic) falleció ayer a consecuencia de una larga enfermedad. ( = The guitarist Oscar Alemán who made a remarkable career and is known for numerous radio programs during the 1940s up to the 1960s (!) has passed away after a long illness ).

This is the first sentence in El diario La Prensa, an Argentine news paper, in an article that announces the fact that Oscar Alemán passed away on the 14th of October 1980.

Today we commemorate the fact that Oscar Alemán, the Argentine guitar player and entertainer, passed away 28th years ago in Buenos Aires (Argentina). While doing some research in old Doctor Jazz Magazines I found some rare pictures in an article by Herman Openneer titled Een Jack Glazer Story.( Doctor Jazz nr. 82 page 22 - 42.) Jack Glazer, drummer, made a career in music from 1925 up to the year 1977 when Herman wrote this article. Jack Glazer played in 1933 in the Baker Boys and joined Josephine Baker at one of her tours along European venues. In that Baker Boys Oscar Alemán was playing the guitar. The article gives some interesting information I love to share with you later; today I love to show you two rare pictures, I never saw before, by the Baker Boys featuring Oscar Alemán. The first one are the Baker Boys in Brussels, Belgium in September 1933. I will later give you all names of the artists, but Oscar Alemán is present as the second from the left in the front row. The second picture was made in Budapest, Hungary late December 1933 according the Christmas tree behind drummer Jack Glazer. In front you can see Josephine Baker dancing with her impressario, while Oscar Alemán ( at the right) and one of the band members are dancing and clapping their hands.

I hope to make a blog about this great 1933 tour by Josephine Baker and the Baker Boys later.

On the 18th of October 2008 the Hot Club de Boedo will commemorate the fact that Oscar Alemán passed away 28 years ago with a concert at the Auditorium of AMIA ( Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina ) organized by the AMIA and the Instituto de Jazz y Música Contemporánea of the University of Floral (Argentina). This Institute for jazz and modern music is affiliated to the International Society of Jazz Research. The Hot Club de Boedo contains Waldo Fonseca: guitar and leader; Heldo Fonseca: clarinet; Martín López Goitía: rhythm guitar and Julián Pierángeli: drums. Special guests are María Vivas vocal and Matías Bahillo, trumpet.
Next year (on the 20th of Februari 2009) we hope to celebrate the fact that Oscar Alemán was born 100 years ago in the neighbourhood of Resistencia in the Chaco province in the north of Argentina. As soon as festivities are planned in Buenos Aires I hope to share the info with you.

El guitarrista Oscar Alemán qur tuviera notable actuación en radiotelefonia en las décadas del 30 al 50 (sic) falleció ayer a consecuencia de una larga enfermedad. ( = De gitarist Oscar Alemán, die een lange carriere achter de rug heeft m.n. in talloze radioprogramma tijdens de jaren veertig tot en met zestig (!) is na de lang ziekbed overleden. )

Zo begint de aankondiging in El Diario La Prensa, een groot dagblad in Buenos Aires (Argentinië), dat het overlijden van Oscar Alemán op 14 oktober 1980 in zijn primera sección meldt.

Vandaag besteden we aandacht aan het feit dat Oscar Alemán, de legendarische Argentijnse gitarist, overleed; vandaag 28 jaar geleden. Op zoek naar informatie in oude Doctor Jazz Magazines stuitte ik op een artikel van Herman Openneer getiteld Een Jack Glazer Story.( Doctor Jazz nr. 82 blz. 22 t/m 42.) Jack Glazer, slagwerker, kon in dat artikel terugzien op een carriere in de muziek, die begon in 1925 tot op het moment dat Herman het verhaal in 1977 optekende. In 1933 speelde hij een seizoen bij de the Baker Boys en ging met Josephine Baker op tournee door Europa. In die bewuste Baker Boys speelde ook Oscar Alemán mee op gitaar en om de één of andere reden was dit artikel me helemaal ontgaan. Het artikel geeft interessante informatie over deze tournee en ik wil daar later nog eens uitgebreid op terug komen. Ik wil vandaag wel twee foto's plaatsen uit dit artikel, die ik nog nooit gezien had. De eerste is een foto van de Baker Boys, gemaakt in september 1933 in Brussel. Ik zal de namen van de bandleden jullie nu besparen, dat komt later wel. Oscar Alemán vind je op de voorste rij, tweede van links.

De tweede foto is gemaakt Budapest, Hongarije eind december 1933. De foto moet rond de kerstdagen gemaakt zijn, te zien aan de kerstboom achter slagwerker Jack Glazer. Vooraan zie je Josephine Baker die met haar Oosteuropese impressario danst en Oscar Alemán (rechts), die al dansend en handenklappend op de dansvloer staat met een ander lid van de band.

Ik hoop later nog eens uitgebreid terug te komen op deze tournee van Josephine Baker met haar Baker Boys uit 1933.

Op 18 oktober 2008 herdenkt de Hot Club de Boedo het feit dat Oscar Alemán 28 jaar geleden overleed met een concert in het Auditorium van de AMIA ( Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina ), een concert georganiseerd door diezelfde AMIA en het Instituto de Jazz y Música Contemporánea van de universiteit van Floral (Argentinië). Dit Instituut voor jazz en moderne muziek is aangesloten bij de International Society of Jazz Research. Volgend jaar, rond 20 februari 2009, hopen we het feit te herdenken dat Oscar Alemán 100 jaar geleden geboren werd in Resistencia in de provincie Chaco in het noorden van Argentinië. Zodra er festiviteiten gepland zijn in Buenos Aires zal ik dit op deze blog vermelden.

Josephine Baker in Gent: een onverwachte ontmoeting

( To the English translation.) Josephine Baker in Ghent: An Unexpected Meeting.

Een week geleden bezochten we de Vlaamse stad Gent, net over de gren met België. Uiteraard bezochten we het historische centrum met de St. Baafs kathedraal, aanbaden Het Lam God's en maakten een stadswandeling; als echte toeristen. Vlak bij Het Gravensteen, het Middeleeuwse kasteel midden in de stad, vonden we een klein restaurant, The House of Eliott geheten. We werden verrast door de etalage, die foto's en voorwerpen bevatte uit de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw. Het meest in het oog lopend was een pop met een bananenrokje aan. Deze Josephine Baker-met-bananenrokje-poppen werden in de jaren twintig in Parijs op staat en in het Bois de Boulogne met duizenden verkocht. De meeste voorwerpen en foto's in de etalage hadden te maken met Josephine Baker.

Josephine Baker, geboren in St. Louis Missouri (USA) in juni 1906, overleed april 1975, na een turbulent leven. Ze was danseres en entertainer, nachtclubzangeres en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd ze bekend door het adopteren van 12 kinderen uit verschillende landen. Maar ze bleef vooral het symbool van het decadente leven van het Parijs van voor de oorlog.
Voor mij is Josephine Baker de vrouw, die Oscar Alemán de kans heeft gegeven bekendheid te krijgen in Europa. Hij werd een goede vriend van haar en speelde in haar begeleidingsorkest. Begin jaren dertig wilde Josephine Baker een gitarist voor haar begeleidingsorkest, The Baker Boys en haar oog viel op Oscar Aleman, de jonge gitarist van het duo Les Loups, waarin Oscar Aleman een duo vormde met hawaiian gitarist Gaston Bueno Lobo. Beide waren vanuit Argentinië met het revuegezelschap van Harry Fleming naar Europa gekomen en hadden o.a. in Parijs gespeeld. Oscar reisde met The Baker Boys door heel Europa en Noord Afrika en maakte naam in de Parijse jazzscene.

Als bekende bandleiders Oscar Aleman hoorden spelen, wilden ze hem graag in hun band opnemen, zoals Duke Ellington. Josephine wist daar steeds een stokje voor te steken: Where do I find a guy that sings in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian; who can dance, is black and touch guitar, cavaquinho, pandeiro, bass, drums and that besides he is a good person. ( = Waar vind ik iemand, die zingt in het Spaans, Frans, Portugees en Italiaans; die kan dansen, zwart is en gitaar speelt, cavaquinho, pandero, bas en slagwerk en bovendien nog erg aardig is ook?) and now you want to take it from me? (= en die wil je van me afpakken?).

Er wordt beweerd dat Josephine en Oscar het samen goed konden vinden, mede omdat ze Spaans met hem kon praten. En natuurlijk bewonderde ze hem om zijn muzikaliteit, wat hem zelfs het muzikale leiderschap van de Baker Boys opleverde, zelfs al kon hij geen noot lezen. Het is vreemd dat in de meeste Josephine Baker biografieën ( en er zijn er wat verschenen ... ! ) Oscar Aleman's naam bijna helemaal ontbreekt. Naked at the Feast door Lynn Haney noemt Oscar Aleman helemaal niet en in The Josephine Baker Story van Ean Wood vind je hem op één pagina in welgeteld vijf regels opgevoerd. Toen ik daar Ean Wood op aansprak zei hij me: I don't know anything about him. Mind .. you're the expert !!) ( = Ik weet weinig van hem. Bedenkt dat jij de kenner bent !!)

Ik vond het bijzonder om midden in het historische centrum van Gent plotseling oog-in-oog te staan met Josephine Baker ..... en nog wel in een restaurant, dat helemaal ingericht is in de stijl van de jaren twintig. Helaas was het restaurant dicht op woensdag, maar op hun website vind je een mooi zicht op hun prachtig ontworpen interieur. En iemand met zo'n goede smaak moet zeker goed kunnen koken !!

Josephine Baker in Ghent; an unexpected meeting.

A week ago we visited the city of Ghent in the north- western part of Belgium, just across the Dutch - Belgian borders. We visited the historical centre with the St. Bavo's Cathedral of course, and made a city tour by feet like real tourists. Near the so-called Gravensteen, the Castle of the Counts, we found a small restaurant, named The House of Eliott. We were surprised by the display window which contained photos and objects from the 1920s. The object that tracked all attention was a doll with a banana costume. Banana-clad Josephine Baker dolls were sold by the thousands in the streets and the Bois de Boulogne during the 1920s in Paris. Most of the photo's an objects were dedicated to Josephine Baker.

Josephine Baker, born in St. Louis Missouri (USA) June 1906, passed away April 1975 after a turbulent life. She was a dancer and entertainer, night club star and after the Second World War she became known for her 12 adopted children of various nationalities. But above all - she was the symbol for the 1920s Roaring Twenties in Paris ....For me, Josephine Baker, was one of the close friends of Oscar Alemán, who played in her revue orchestra, The Baker Boys during the 1930s in Paris.
Josephine Baker, who needed early 1930s a guitar player for her band had heard Oscar Aleman playing in Les Loups, a Hawaiian guitar duo with Gaston Bueno Lobo and Oscar Alemán, both Argentine born musicians, who formed a duo which became part of the Harry Fleming revue that travelled through Europe. Oscar Alemán became part of the Baker Boys and went on tour across Europe during the 1930s. When famous band leaders, like Duke Ellington wanted to have Oscar in their bands, Josephine must have answered: Where do I find a guy that sings in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian; that can dance, is black and touch guitar, cavaquinho, pandeiro, bass, drums and that besides: he is a good person and now you want to take it from me? It is said that Josephine liked Oscar, because she could speak Spanish to him, and, although Oscar couldn't read any music, he even became, late 1930s, the leader of the Baker's Boys.

It is strange, that in most biographies about Josephine Baker's life ( and there are a lot of publication about her), there is but few information about Oscar Aleman. Naked at the Feast by Lynn Haney has no entry at all ..... and in The Josephine Baker Story by Ean Wood it has only one entry of 5 lines. When I once asked Ean Wood why he had only one entry he said; Well that's all I have ... mind you're the expert !!

Isn't it great to walk along the historical inner city of Ghent, searching for interesting shops with secondhand books or records ( I didn't find one last week !!) and find this very nice restaurant? On Wednesday the restaurant was closed, but the design inside looks great, according to its informative website. And the food must be great too if you have such a good taste in music - I suppose !!
