In een eerdere blog over de Jazz from Carnegie Hall concerten (1958) schreef ik aan het slot: Er zijn, voorzover ik weet, geen opnamen bewaard gebleven van de twee Nederlandse concerten, .... Deze vooronderstelling is nu ontkracht, dankzij de nieuwste cd van het  Nederlands Jazz Archief, onderdeel van het Muziek Centrum Nederland (MCN), getiteld Jazz from Carnegie Hall - Live in Amsterdam 1958, uitgebracht in de serie Jazz at the Concertgebouw.  Deze serie opnamen van live concerten zijn eertijds opgenomen door de Nederlandse impresario Lou van Rees.

In het bijbehorende informatieve boekje beschrijft jazzjournalist Bert Vuijsje het nachtconcert dat plaats vond op 27 september 1958 in het Concertgebouw van Amsterdam. Een groep Amerikaanse muzikanten, nu allen jazzlegenden, maar ook toen al gevierde muzikanten, maakte een tournee langs Europese podia en streken in ons land neer voor twee concerten, te weten in het Kurhaus in Scheveningen ( 20.00 u) en het Concertgebouw (23.30 u) in Amsterdam. Het concert werd aangekondigd als Jazz from Carnegie Hall en de tour startte in Engeland, met een concert o.a. in de Free Trade Hall in Manchester ( de 16de); daarna richting het noorden met o.a. een concert op de 22ste in de Concert Hall in Stockholm;  daarna naar ons land met de twee eerdergenoemde concerten in Scheveningen en Amsterdam (27ste), Duitsland, met optredens in Berlijn (28 en 29 september) en München (3 oktober) en uiteindelijk als laatste stop Frankrijk; meestal vonden er twee concerten per dag plaats. De volgende muzikanten stonden in wisselende samenstellingen op het podium: J. J. Johnson en Kai Winding, de twee bekende trombonisten, die roem hadden geoogst als het duo Jay and Kai - Lee Konitz en Zoot Sims saxen - Red Garland en Phineas Newborn piano - Oscar Pettiford bas en Kenny Clarke slagwerk.

Het fameuze trombone-duo werd begleid door een ritmesectie, met daarin een jonge veelbelovende pianist Phineas Newborn, die, hoewel nog vrijwel onbekend in Europa, het Nederlandse publiek fascineerde door zijn abundant virtuosity and exquisite swing (= uitbundige virtuositeit en verfijnde swing), zoals Bert in het bijbehorende boekje zijn spel omschrijft. Phineas Newborn komt  met zijn trio uitgebreid aan bod op de cd, maar  niet de stars of the evening, aangezien men er voor gekozen heeft alleen de eerste set uit te brengen ....... zonder J.J. Johnson en Kai Winding, hoewel eerstgenoemde een jaar eerder, augustus 1957, veel indruk had gemaakt in een zelfde nachtconcert in het Congresgebouw, dat uitgebracht werd in een eerdere cd in deze voortreffelijke serie Jazz at the Concertgebouw (MCN 0903). Waarom is er niet voor gekozen om het hele concert op een 2cd-album uit te brengen?  Misschien moeten we maar hopen dat er ooit nog een vervolg komt op deze uitgave.

Bert Vuijsje bespreekt het concert, de twaalf geselecteerde nummers en de kritieken, gedetailleerd en die ga ik hier niet herkauwen ..... Het blad Rhythme publiceerde een recensie van het enkele uren eerder uitgevoerde   concert in het Kurhaus in Scheveningen, dat om acht uur, tien over acht om precies te zijn begon en Anton Kop, die daar als recensent aanwezig was, vatte zijn indruk samen in een pakkende titel: Jazz from Carnegie Hall - Een teleurstellend geheel. Zijn teleurstelling gold met name de korte duur van het concert en hij verweet Lou van Rees dat het publiek geen waar voor zijn geld kreeg ( Hoewel? Voor die ƒ 6,60 eerste rang (incl. bespreekkosten en een dubbeltje voor de garderobe) had ik deze heren wel eens willen horen spelen ... ), net zoals eerder was gebeurd tijdens het Jazz at the Philharmonic concert van vier maanden eerder, met coryfeën als Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Sonny Stitt, Coleman Hawkins, Herb Ellis en Ray Brown. Wederom was het programma danig besnoeid - soloisten als Zoot Sims en Lee Konitz speelden twee nummers en verdwenen dan weer haastig achter het toneel, schreef hij,  En waren de toehoorders om negen uur al in de stemming om pauze te gaan vieren, terwijl het konsert om tien over acht begonnen was?

Zelden zo een negatief verhaal gelezen en het lijkt alsof de journalist de kater van het concert nog eens wilde delen met de argeloze lezer, die het concert wellicht gemist had  ...... met quotes over Lee Konitz als: slecht op dreef; mateloos teleurstellend; zijn solo-optreden was pijnlijk slecht, maar ook Zoot Sims ( goedkope effektjes) en Kenny Clarke (te druk) kregen een veeg uit de pan. En Oscar Pettiford realiseerde zich slechts enkele malen van de ware taak van de bas in de ritme-sektie is, moest er ook aan geloven. Gelukkig is van al deze kritische quotes op de cd weinig te merken, al geloof ik zeker dat de duur van het concert in Scheveningen ver beneden de maat geweest moet zijn - reken maar uit: twee korte sets, een pauze, de busrit Scheveningen-Amsterdam en wellicht het afbreken en opbouwen van de set ....  De toegangsprijzen voor gebeurtenissen als deze zijn toch heus niet dusdanig, dat men zich met een kluitje in het riet zou laten sturen, moppert Kop nog even na. Als aan toekomstige Haagse konserten niet meer zorg wordt besteed, zou de belangstelling ervoor wel eens schrikbarend kunnen dalen.

Vooral Phineas Newborn zouden we zonder enige beperking een fenomeen willen noemen, noteerde hij.  De uitvoering van het nummer Back Home noemde Anton Kop nog eens extra als één van de nummers die hem was bijgebleven. Het nummer werd een paar uur later opnieuw uitgevoerd, maar nu in Amsterdam en kwam op de cd terecht als Walkin' - inderdaad - één van de boeiendste nummers van de cd.

Hij behoort al sinds lang tot het rijtje van mijn meest favoriete bassisten en de opnamen, die eerder verschenen uit deze Jazz From Carnegie Hall tour, een week eerder opgenomen in Manchester en Stockholm, behoren tot mijn favorieten ( First Bass - Oscar Pettiford) ( IAJRC CD 1010). Rhythme bestempelde een jaar eerder Oscar Pettiford in een artikel over underrated musicians, in goed Nederlands, geschreven door ene Peter Sweens in een artikel met de crypische titel: An Oscar for Pettiford, met als bijtitel: Wat het betekent tot de grote groep van underrated musicians te behoren ....) als de één na beste bassist ooit  ( de beste was, volgens het blad, wijlen Jimmy Blanton).

Dit zesde album in de serie Jazz At The Concertgebouw, getiteld Jazz from Carnegie Hall - Live in Amsterdam 1958 - Star Eyes ( met Lee Konitz - Zoot Sims - Phineas Newborn - Red Garland - Oscar Pettiford - Kenny Clarke ( MCN 1201) is weer zo'n schitterende live-cd, waar je, als je van de jazzmuziek uit de jaren vijftig houdt, moeilijk omheen kunt - en, laten we hopen dat het Nederlands Jazzarchief, dat door bezuinigingen in zwaar weer terecht gekomen is, in de toekomst dit belangrijke werk mag voortzetten. Deze cd ( en de albums, hieronder genoemd) zijn te bestellen bij het Nederlands Jazzarchief.

De andere vijf albums in de serie Jazz at the Congresgebouw zijn: Chet Baker (1955) – Gerry Mulligan ( 1956) – J. J. Johnson ( 1957) – Sarah Vaughan ( 1958) – Misha Mengelberg-Piet Noordijk Quartet (1966).

Jammer genoeg ontbreken op deze zesde uitgave, getiteld Star Eyes, in deze belangwekkende serie historische concertregistraties, de hoofdact van de avond, de trombonisten J. J. The Dutch Jazz Archive, part of the Muziek Centrum Nederland ( MCN) has released a new album in its series Jazz at the Concertgebouw. This series contains live concerts, as produced and recorded by Lou Van Rees, a Dutch impresario.

The informative liner notes by jazz journalist Bert Vuijsje, give, as always, detailed information about the concert that took place at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw the 27th of September, 1958. A group of US musicians, now all legends in jazz, but in those days already the creme de la creme of the US jazz scene, were touring Europe and were scheduled for two concerts in the Netherlands: at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen, the beach resort near The Hague ( starting at 8.00 p.m.) and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw ( 11.30 p.m.). The Jazz From Carnegie Hall tour, produced by Harold Davison,  like the tested Norman Granz Jazz At The Philharmonic formula, toured Europe, starting its tour in England ( like in the Free Trade Hall in Manchester ( 16th); then to Scandinavia, with a concert on the 22nd in the Concert Hall in Stockholm; The Netherlands, with concerts in Scheveningen and Amsterdam (27th), Germany (Berlin (28th-29th) (Munich (3rd of Oct) and France; usually two concerts were played nightly. The line-up was: J. J. Johnson and Kai Winding, the two famous trombonists, who had become famous due to their cooperation in  previous years as the Jay and Kai duo - Lee Konitz and Zoot Sims reeds - Red Garland and Phineas Newborn piano - Oscar Pettiford double bass and Kenny Clarke drums.

The famous trombone duo was scheduled with the rhythm section, featuring young piano player Phineas Newborn, unknown in Europe, but impressed the Dutch with his abundant virtuosity and exquisite swing, as Bert describes it in the liner notes. It is a pity, that the part of the concert ( 2nd set) featuring Jay and Kai wasn't released, as the producer selected only the first set (except the two bonus tracks with the Oscar Pettiford Trio) ....... without J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding. Especially the former, Jay Jay Johnson, impressed with his quintet a year earlier, at the same plays at a night concert, August 1957, which can be heard in this excellent series of Jazz at the Concertgebouw in a previous release (MCN 0903). Why not released the full concert at a 2cd set? Well, the MCN could make amends with a part 2 .....

Bert Vuijsje gives detailed information in its liner notes about the concert in Amsterdam, the dozen tunes selected and the reviews in Dutch newspapers ... I won't go on about it!
The Dutch Rhythme published a review of the Kurhaus concert in Scheveningen, which started at 8.00 p.m. and Anton Kop, who joined that concert, was very negative about it in an article entitled: Jazz from Carnegie Hall - een teleurstellend geheel ( = Disappointing). He is very critical about the producer, Lou Van Rees and the concerts he recently organized (like Jazz at the Philharmonic, with a line-up which must be still active in the Heaven All-Stars: Dizzy Gillespie, Roy Eldridge, Sonny Stitt, Coleman Hawkins, Herb Ellis and Ray Brown, to list some) as the public didn't got value for money. Wederom was het programma danig besnoeid - soloisten als Zoot Sims en Lee Konitz speelden twee nummers en verdwenen dan weer haastig achter het toneel.(= Again the program was cut down - soloists like Zoot Sims and Lee Konitz only played two tunes, and left stage in a hurry). En waren de toehoorders om negen uur al in de stemming om pauze te gaan vieren, terwijl het konsert om tien over acht begonnen was? ( = Do you really think that the audience needed a break at 9.00 o'clock after three quarters of an hour? ).

The reviewer must have had a hangover from the concert, as the musicians were or slecht op dreef (= in bad form); mateloos teleurstellend ( = very disappointing); zijn solo-optreden was pijnlijk slecht (= his solo performance was awfully bad): all quotes about Lee Konitz. Goedkope effektjes ( = cheap licks): quote about Zoot Sims. Te druk ( = too noisy) ( Quote about Kenny Clarke) and Oscar Pettiford realiseerde zich slechts enkele malen van de ware taak van de bas in de ritme-sektie is. ( ... realized only a few times what the role of the bass player is in the rhythm section).

Both Red Garland and Phineas Newborn could fascinate the author. Vooral Phineas Newborn zouden we zonder enige beperking en fenomeen willen noemen. ( Especially Phineas Newborn was a phenomenon, a great piano player without any restrictions). The tune, which fascinated Anton Kop most, Back Home (sic) was listed as Walkin' in the Concertgebouw concert release (2nd concert) - it belongs to one of my favourites of the album.

And what about Oscar Pettiford? He has been one of my favourite bass players for years and the Jazz From Carnegie Hall tracks, recorded during other live concerts with the same line up in Manchester and Stockholm, recorded a week before the Amsterdam concert, belong to my favourites ( First Bass- Oscar Pettiford) ( IAJRC CD 1010). This great bass player was labeled in 1957 by the Dutch Rhythme magazine as the one-but best ( the best was the late Jimmy Blanton) bass player.  He belongs to the list of underrated musicians, Peter Sweens explains in the article An Oscar for Pettiford, subtitled Wat het betekent tot de grote groep van underrated musicians te behoren ....) This sixth album in the series Jazz At The Concertgebouw, entitled Jazz from Carnegie Hall - Live in Amsterdam 1958 - Star Eyes ( with Lee Konitz - Zoot Sims - Phineas Newborn - Red Garland - Oscar Pettiford - Kenny Clarke ( MCN 1201) is another must-have in this unique series of legendary live concerts .... and it would be great if the second set of this 1958 Amsterdam concert would be released too ..........

The cd series Jazz at the Concertgebouw, released by the Muziek Centrum Nederland (MCN) has been enlarged with a new album, featuring the first set of the 1958 Jazz From Carnegie Hall tour, featuring Lee Konitz, Zoot Sims, Phineas Newborn, Red Garland, Oscar Petiford and Kenny Clarke. The main attraction, trombonists J. J. Johnson and Kai Winding, who played during the second set, are not present, much to my regret, on this sixth album in the series Jazz at the Concertgebouw, Star Eyes.
