Onlangs lanceerde de jonge talentvolle altsaxofoniste Grace Kelly haar nieuwste album, getiteld Man With The Hat, de man met de pet. Een nogal vreemde titel, maar als je weet wie er op deze plaat van haar sextet meespelen, dan weten de kenners al wie de man met de pet is: Grace Kelly (18) en Phil Woods (80), beiden op altsax - Monty Alexander piano - Evan Gregor bas - Bill Goodwin slagwerk en Jordan Perlson percussie.

Ik hoorde Phil Woods voor het eerst tijdens een concert in juli 2003 op het Northsea Jazzfestival in Den Haag met het Bud Shank Quartet en ik herinner me dat ik in afwachting was op de dingen die zouden gaan komen, toen ik Phil Woods ineens zag lopen - met zijn altsax onder de arm en zijn onafscheidelijke handelsmerk, zijn leren pet ........ Geboren in mei 1992 als Grace Chung, kreeg ze de achternaam van haar stiefvader Bob Kelly toen haar moeder hertrouwde en heette ze voortaan Grace Kelly. Voor de duidelijkheid: er is geen enkel verband tussen haar naam en die van de gevierde gelijknamige actrice, die bekend werd door haar huwelijk met prins Reinier van Monaco . Als kind speelde ze piano en toen ze tien was kreeg ze een klarinet en al snel stapte ze over op de altsax, gefascineerd als ze was door de muziek van Stan Getz, die weliswaar tenorsaxofoon speelde, waarvan ze de muziek hoorde tijdens de zondagse brunches. I started playing the sax because of Stan Getz and the tenor adds to my goal of creating different colours and moods. ( = Ik begon sax te spelen door Stan Getz en de tenor bespelen werd mijn doel vanwege zijn verschillende klankkleuren en stemmingen.).

Ze bleek een natuurtalent te zijn. Al op 12-jarige leeftijd (!) maakte ze haar eerste plaat, getiteld Dreaming. Ze herinnert zich nog steeds dat moment, dat ze bij de presentatie het podium opstapte ..... I realized that performing was my favourite thing to do.( = Ik voelde, dat dit was wat ik wilde - optreden!). Gedurende de jaren die daar op volgden, speelde ze met grote namen als Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick, Frank Morgan en pianiste Marian McPartland. Ze nam een plaat op met de grote altsaxofonist Lee Konitz, die haar een tijdje begeleidde. Phil Woods herinnert nog steeds de eerste keer dat hij haar hoorde spelen, 14-jaar jong: Lee Konitz had told me about her. but I was still amazed. ( = Lee Konitz had me over haar verteld, maar ik was toch overdonderd). And since then her progress has been astounding! (= En sinds die tijd ontwikkelde ze zich verbazingwekkend). I was so impressed I presented her with one of my caps.(= Ik was zo onder de indruk, dat ik haar één van mijn petten gaf). Grace was maar wat blij met die afgedragen pet: Het was voor het eerst dat deze levende legende zijn icoon, de leren pet, zomaar, spontaan, weggaf en op haar hoofd plaatste. Een symbolisch gebaar? I look at this hat that he's worn on his album covers for the last fifty years (!) and it's really well worn, and now he has a brand new one. It's really a special memory. ( = Ik kijk vaak naar die pet, die de laatste vijftig jaar (!) op elke Phil Woods hoes prijkte en deze is echt afgedragen; hij heeft nu een nieuwe. Het is een schitterend aandenken!) Dat Phil Woods pas in 1976 besloot om voortaan een leren pet te dragen als symbool voor zijn muziek, lijkt een detail.

Afgelopen jaar ontmoetten beide saxofonisten elkaar opnieuw in de Red Rock Recording Studio in Saylorsburg PA (USA) om deze schitterende plaat Man With The Hat op te nemen, met niemand minder dan Monty Alexander at the piano.
Monty zit aan de toetsen van de vleugel, één van die pianisten, die me mateloos kunnen boeien. Hij zei over Grace: She is one of the most gifted, deeply musical, charismatic, and delightful musicians I have ever known in all my years in the world of jazz - and she is truly humble. ( = Ze is één van de meest talentvolle, muzikale, charismatische en heerlijkste muzikanten, die ik in al die jaren in de wereld van de jazz heb gekend .. en bovendien is ze erg bescheiden).

De plaat bevat zeven nummers, de meeste standards, zoals de Benny Carter compositie People Time, het nummer The Way You Look Tonight, en de niet zo vaak gespeelde composite van Billy Strayhorn, Ballad For Very Tired and Very Sad Lotus-Eaters. Man with the Hat is een compositie van Grace Kelly, ze wordt volgende maand pas 19, dat ze schreef als eerbetoon aan Phil Woods. Het titelnummer bevat een schitterend duet van Grace met Phil Woods waarin Dan Morgenstern, die een verhaal schreef in het bijbehorende boekje, invloeden van Benny Carter herkent, maar, zo zegt hij, ... she has her own sound, and her own way of phasing. Unlike many young and gifted musicians, she does not, even at this still early stage, reveal any obvious stylistic models.( = .... ze heeft haar eigen geluid en haar eigen frasering. Ze vervalt niet, zoals zoveel jonge en talentvolle musici doen, zelfs niet op deze jonge leeftijd, op het naspelen van bepaalde stijlmodellen. ) Een prachtig nummer. Grace zing ook in nummers als Gone (een eigen compositie) en People Time. Ze heeft een aangename stem. Het nummer Every Time We Say Goodbye, een Cole Porter compositie, speelt ze op altsax, samen met bassist Evan Gregor. Het nummer begint unisono met sax en gestreken bas. Eén van de nummers die me het meest facineerde was het laatste nummer, de Jerome Kern compositie The Way You Look Tonight, gespeeld in up-tempo door Grace Kelly en haar kwartet ( Phil speelt niet mee), waarin ze laat horen wat een geweldige saxofoniste ze is. Monty verrast met een prachtige solo, die hij, zoals zo vaak, laat beginnen met een, niet begeleide, vrije improvisatie á la Erroll Garner, voordat hij swingend met de ritmesectie het nummer in duikt..... Prachtig!

Voldoende redenen dus om deze cd aan te schaffen en ik zou zelf gaan voor een "hard copy" zoals ze dat in de VS zeggen, de Cd-versie dus, al was het alleen al vanwege het prachtig uitgevoerde en vormgegeven album. De lay-out, gemaakt door David Greenberg, heeft een paar leuke grapjes verwerkt, zoals het verhaal van Dan Morgenstern dat in grote letters binnenin begint en dan halverwege de zin afbreekt .................. om daarna verder te gaan in het losse boekje!. Dus niet meteen mailen dat je een misdruk hebt - dat hoort zo!

Ik herinner me nog dat moment dat ik Phil Woods voor het eerst zag. In afwachting van een optreden van het Bud Shank Quartet op het Northsea Jazzfestival in Den Haag, juli 2003, zag ik hem daar plotseling aankomenlopen met zijn saxofoon onder de arm en zijn handelsmerk, de leren pet, op zijn hoofd. Phil Woods (80), de legendarische man met de pet, heeft met de jonge talentvolle altsaxofoniste Grace Kelly (18) een schitterende plaat gemaakt, getiteld "Man with the Hat" - Voor haar neemt hij, letterlijk, zijn petje af .... Recently the young talented alto saxophone playerng> Grace Kelly released her latest album, entitled Man With The Hat. A rather puzzling title, but if you have had the opportunity to study the line-up of her sextet, I guess you'll know who's that man with the hat. The Grace Kelly Quintet features: Phil Woods alto saxophone - Monty Alexander piano - Evan Gregor double bass - Bill Goodwin drums and Jordan Perlson percussion.

Born as Grace Chung, May 1992, she got the name of Grace Kelly thanks to her stepfather Bob Kelly and her name has no relations what-so-ever to that other Grace Kelly, the well known actor, who became the wife of the Monegasque prince Rainier. As a kid she played the piano and at the age of ten she started to learn the clarinet but soon after that, she took up the alto saxophone, fascinated as she was by the music of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz - the music she heard during Sundays brunches. I started playing the sax because of Stan Getz and the tenor adds to my goal of creating different colours and moods.

She turned out to be a natural talent. Aged 12 years old (!) she made her first albums, entitled Dreaming. She still remembers the moment when she walked on stage .... I realized that performing was my favourite thing to do. During the next decade up to now she played with great names like Wynton Marsalis, Harry Connick, Frank Morgan and piano player Marian McPartland. She recorded with the great alto saxophone player Lee Konitz, who supported her some years. Phil Woods remembers the first time he heard her playing, 14-years young: Lee Konitz had told me about her. but I was still amazed. And since then her progress has been astounding! I was so impressed I presented her with one of my caps. Grace was absolutely delighted with his worn cap: It was the first time that this living legend removed his iconic leather cap and place it on her head - the first time he'd ever made such a gesture to a fellow alto saxophonist. I look at this hat that he's worn on his album covers for the last fifty years (!) and it's really well worn, and now he has a brand new one. It's really a special memory. Phil adapted the leather cap as his trademark in 1976.

Last year both saxophone players met at the Red Rock Recording Studio in Saylorsburg PA (USA) to make this record Man With The Hat, with no one less than Monty Alexander at the piano.
Monty is one of the legends at the piano I love to hear. He said about Grace: She is one of the most gifted, deeply musical, charismatic, and delightful musicians I have ever known in all my years in the world of jazz - and she is truly humble.

The album contains seven track, most standards, like Benny Carter's People Time, The Way You Look Tonight, and the less known Billy Strayhorn Ballad For Very Tired and Very Sad Lotus-Eaters. Man With The Hat is a Grace Kelly composition, she wrote as an honour to Phil Woods of course. It contains a great duet with Phil Woods in which Dan Morgenstern (he wrote the liner notes) recognizes some influences of Benny Carter, but ... she has her own sound, and her own way of phasing-unlike many young and gifted musicians, she does not, even at this still early stage, reveal any obvious stylistic models. A great composition. Grace also sings, in tunes like her own composition Gone and People Time. She has a pretty voice.
The tune Every Time We Say Goodbye, a Cole Porter composition, is a duet between Grace on the alto saxophone and Evan Gregor on bass violin. It starts with an unison bowed bass - sax intro .... One of the tunes I liked most was the final one, the well known Jerome Kern composition The Way You Look Tonight, played in up-tempo by Grace Kelly and her Quartet ( Phil Woods omited) which shows what a great saxophone player Grace is and Monty surprises with one of his typically piano solos, which opens with a free Erroll Garner styled intro, before it starts into swing .......... Great stuff.

There might be another reason to obtain a hard copy of this disc - it's the beautiful designed and informative digi-pack, with a great layout by David Greenberg. It has some nice finds like the liner notes by Dan Morgenstern who start in big letters inside the digi-pack and continuou, right in the middle of a sentence, in the booklet inside ...........

Grace (18) and Phil (80) are now recorded together on a great album, entitled The Man With The Hat. The Keep Swinging blog was impressed to hear this young gifted talented saxophonist performing, together with this legend with the hat.
